I've decided to get my first current-gen console, a PS4 slim. As someone who is not used to the PlayStation brand let alone HD gaming, is there anything Sony fans think I should know about it like choosing a new, bigger hard drive? Anyone know of any good buy 2 get one free game deals going on? I think the best offer is Best Buy's PS4 Uncharted 4 bundle with $50 gift card.

Gamefly used games are wonderful. Pick up the Uncharted collection, The Last of us and Ratchet and Clank. Get a good headset (Cloud 2 would be a good start). Get PS+ if you're gaming online or love indie games.

There are some okay deals on the PSN Store right now - indeed, one is a BOGOF deal. If you have a good enough connection for digital copies to be okay.

What, if anything, would a PS4 Pro do for a 720p TV? Obviously I need to upgrade the TV at some point (sooner rather than later), but I'm getting the Pro for free regardless, so I figured I may as well ask where I'd currently stand lol

What world do you live in? You have to go out your way to get a 4K TV. And they're not cheap if you want the full HDR experience.

With the holiday price it's a $150 difference with no $50 gift card so a $200 difference with no game. I'd recommend it too but that's a lot more pricey.

I'll echo what multiple users have, throw in a bit more and get a Pro instead, if you're able to. You'll get double the HDD space ( 1 TB stock ) and it's a way more powerful PS4. It's going to future proof you for a good few years, plus a big bunch of the notable titles you'll want to revisit are also pro patched, so you'll have better experience(s) than on base PS4.
More than half of the replies in the thread recommend a Pro although the user hasn't shown any interest on it nor anyone has asked if the user has a 4k TV or any interest on buying one.
Do you have a 4k TV? Check the number of games that support Pro and then the number of games that give any improvements on non-4k TVs and make your own decision.

Everyone recommending a PRO... a Pro is $150 more and doesn't come with any games... A slim is a fine choice unless they currently have a 4k TV. Chances are by the time they are ready for 4k, the PRO will be a lot cheaper and come bundled with a games and can trade their current console towards it.

If your gaming at 1080p and have no plans in buying a new tv since there still isn't a lot of 4k/HDR content I would go with the slim.
Right now it's still kind of a mixed bag with Pro, and there are no real good bundles like there is currently with the slim. I would save the extra money and grabs a SSHD for 50$ on newegg.
PS4 slim is HDR compatible and most newer 4k tv's do a great job scaling a 1080p image. So with what You save I would down the road buy a new TV once HDR 4k tv's are really cheap and by then PS5 will be rumored.
All your missing out on are a couple of games with higher IQ. There haven't been any huge improvements in frame rate on a lot of games with the pro minus a select few.
I say buy a slim, save some money sometime late next year or early spring 2018 buy a new TV with HDR, then see where PRO is at price/bundle wise.
He can still get a better deal with the slim, amazon had the uncharted 4 bundle for 229.99. He can buy a 1tb for 55$ on newegg that's faster than stock, then buy a cheap enclosure to have a 500gb external drive for movies/music and keep it plugged in for plex server on PS4.
Slim is the way better deal at the moment.

Sure Slim is economically a better deal, but with Pro you're ensuring a more future proof console, also, naturally you'll get more bang for your buck with the games as well. Running them at much higher quality visuals and better locked frame rates. This includes a whole bunch of must-play PS4 titles release so far and of course all future games.
Also, bar a few examples (TLG, Dishonored 2) most Pro games support super sampling too, so it's not like you're not getting any advantages on a 1080p display.
It's a toss up whether OP wants to spend an extra $100 for the device itself or save that money to get more games I guess.
Of course. Improvements aren't limited to VR titles only. I don't have one or have any interest in a VR device but am happy I spent the extra $100 for my Pro.

Don't just think about right now. Think about a few years down the line. How long do you plan on using the PS4? Do you want to be able to play 4k games on it eventually? When will you think about buying a 4K tv? It may not matter as much now but down the line it will and with the difference being $150, if you can swing it, I would.
OP, my PS4 is basically just a Destiny machine. With a couple small exceptions (Digimon Cyber Sleuth is the big one), I'm using my PS4 less and less and literally every other console I own more.
Pro is a waste of money, though. The improvements aren't really enough to matter, and there's little indication they will be. If you want a Pro, you won't see much benefit unless you get a TV that supports it, and if you have a sound system, well, you'll have to replace your receiver too...

I'd recommend going Pro. It'll be worth the extra cost (already is depending on what games you play). Plus, it can capture video in 1080p and screenshots approaching 4k.
I'm playing on a 1080p, and everything still looks amazing on the games that downsample and/or offer higher detail settings (i.e. FFXV). Not to mention they often run more smoothly and thus capture more smoothly if you love using the Share feature.

It's a 7200rpm drive so it will be a little faster than the standard 5400rpm in loading the OS,APPS and some games.
Every game that's been shown has been shown running on OG PS4 not the pro. All if not most of Final Fantasy's footage we'eve seen up till release was OG PS4. Horizon's up till last couple months has been OG PS4, god of war demo was running on OG PS4. Uncharted 4 etc.

If you care about image quality you should definitely get the Pro. The Slim I would only recommend if you are sticking to a different gaming platform primarily and you want to spent the least amount of money to see what the Sony ecosystem is all about, and won't be playing a lot of games on it.
I guess I should have mentioned that I do own a 4KTV, bought a new one during black friday, but I also have an older (new condition) HDTV as well. I do have access to the 4KTV, but there's a lack of shelf space (it's on the wall above a small piano). The older HDTV I'd be able to move into my room soon once I buy a digital cable box for it.

You can't really say that when you only use it for Destiny, which is a game that wasn't even patched for Pro though
Once you play a few Pro enabled games, the incredibly clean IQ becomes apparent immediately.
As good as they look on OG, imagine them looking better on the Pro. UC4 has a 70% resolution increase, FFXV is checkerboarded way higher. Horizon will have checker baorded 4K. Death Stranding was running on Pro at the PSX event. I can only swoon at the prospect of a checker boarded 4K God of War.

It's pretty late to be joining the PlayStation party now this suggests to me the OP is either a lapsed gamer or he's been happy with previous gen console upto now. If either of these are true it means it's likely this console purchase is gonna do him for quite a few years. I honestly feel that the Pro would be the way to go regardless of what TV he currently has it's just future proofing.
Sony themselves haven't done a good job getting the Pro to the masses maybe the OP didn't even know of its existence. I know a number of casual gamers (with PS4s) that had never heard of it

It comes with one of the best games of 2016, and the $50 gift card will allow you to buy another one or two (or another controller) if you don't want necessarily super recent ones.
If you aren't against a challenge, I advise Bloodborne and Destiny or Overwatch for vibrant MP (or Driveclub if you like Racing).
If you prefer a more casual/ family offering, Ratchet & Clank and Dragon Quest Builders or The Last Guardian.
If you are big into Rpgs, I dvise Witcher 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition or Divinity Original Sins. Haven't played FF XV yet.

It's up to you, I'v seen a pro in person running games. They look nice but so dont og PS4 games on a 1080p screen.
It's up to you if IQ matters than getting more bang for the buck. Because going slim you are getting a bundle, and can have money left over for more games/controllers/ and bigger hard drive. PS5 will be rumored around 2018, with a reveal in 2019. So it's up to you, but outside of a couple studios, there hasn't been this gigantic positive feedback for the pro.
And if you want native 4k games then PC or PS5 is where that will happen.

I own a pro and play on a 4k tv but "much higher quality visuals" is kind of laughable IMO. I can tell a difference but it's really not an incredible difference. The regular PS4 is totally sufficient on 1080p. If anything, get a slim and a 2tb hard drive and you're still out the door for less money than a pro and have more storage.
I have a Pro with a 2TB hybrid drive and i think above all else, the hybrid drive combined with the SATA3 of the Pro is the biggest upgrade. I barely notice the visual enhancements.

I got Uncharted 4, PS4, Ratchet & Clank, and MLB The Show for $227 shipped in a deal. It's not available now though, or I'd help you out. Originally I was just getting UC4 and the PS4 for $217, but figured out how to get R&C and MLB for $10 more combined, haha.
Edit* Also, it's pretty remarkable....Upscaled from 1080p Uncharted 4 on a PS4 Slim still looks great on a 4k TV (if you have one). The regular PS4 is a steal at $200.

Id say get a slim with a game and use the gift card to get PS plus. Then hit up the PSn for any digital games that your interested in. You can always upgrade the HDD on the ps4 if you need to down the line. If your 4k tv is gonna be your main playing space then a pro is great idea. If your gonna have the ps4 in your room then a slim is the better deal.

I guess it's a preference and dependent on which games you've played. Personally, the few games I've got which have the switching option (Mordor and RoTR) I've tried both in their enriched 1080p modes and the 4K supported modes. The difference in IQ, to me at least, is incredibly apparent.

For me personally the Pro was worth it, the increase in image quality was awesome for me. Going with the slim though isn't a bad choice at all. If you want to spend less money on the console and more on the games then I would go that route, especially if 4K isn't important to you. The enhancements to Pro games will probably get greater than they are at the moment though.
Please do not think you know what Pro has to offer based off this thread, this thread is closer to being an ad that a source of info. You dont need to spend more than a couple of hours researching to see the differences by yourself and it's well worth to know if you are going to appreciate those differences or you wold appreciate a lot more 3 games, an extra controller and/or some psn plus time.

Get a PS4 with the smallest HDD you can and then with the money you saved buy a bigger appropriate portable drive, disassemble and install it into the console first yourself before you even turn it on.

Get the PS4 Pro. The TB hard drive is so nice. The 500 GB gets full REAAAALLY quick. And then you get to enjoy the benefits of some of the games that perform and look better.

How the heck is recommending a Pro like an ad and how is it anymore an ad than recommending a slim/games? He's asking for advice and this is what people think. I agree but I also think it's quite a bit pricier, but worth it if it's not an issue.

If I was in your shoes I would get the Pro. But I do have this mentality that I have to have the best of any product. I couldn't enjoy Uncharted 4 on the slim knowing that there is a better looking version that someday I wouldn't want to check out, because I view that as a waste of time. I don't want to replay all my games twice.
Right now I have an original PS4, and I've haven't been playing much lately because of the reason above. So it's either I upgrade and get the best experience, or I just resign myself to playing games at not their best quality and never think about playing them again.
Some posters have mentioned that you need a 4K TV, but I don't believe that's the case. You can still get better framerates, image quality at 1080p with the Pro.
Lol, I'm almost torn between which model to get now. I guess if I can afford to get the PS4 Pro since I do have $500 in gift cards from work. Hopefully, I can use them all either online or in-store at Best Buy/Target.
As far as games go, I've been thinking about getting Bloodborne , Overwatch and maybe Dishonored 2 for now, then next year likely for Gravity Rush 2, Nier Automata and Persona 5. I'm not that familiar with indie games and all that, but Owlboy sure looks cool.
