Double Dragon 4 (PS4/Steam) teaser trailer

Why it call it Double Dragon 4? We already had Double Dragon 5 on the SNES which would make Super Double Dragon on SNES, the real Double Dragon 4.

Why not call it Double Dragon Rebirth or something?

Yep.

Say what you want about Neon, but the soundtrack is unimpeachable. Love how they went for the 80s synths and action movie cheese.

I bought that soundtrack and still listen it. The remixes of classic DD tunes were also fantastic. Took me back. Too bad it wasn't well received.

Kaufman is awesome. Was the game not well received? I've only ever heard people say they loved it.

holy shit fuck yeah. At first I thought Aksys? AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. They're gonna fuck it up like they fucked up the Contra game. But then I saw the old style and I'm like HELL yeah. But I wouldn't mind seeing Neon ported too.

I mean, I love the idea of adopting an iconic retro look and doing new installments in that style faithfully, like the last gen MM9 & 10 games or the upcoming Sonic Mania, or even better, going further to creating whole new titles, like Shovel Knight or Axiom Verge. This feels a bit too lazy just going from that teaser. Why not start with arcade or 16-bit foundations for a new DD beat 'em up? That said, I'm feeling confident that it will be better than DD Neon just because it will retain the classic down 'n dirty grapple moves that define the gritty vibe of classic Technos Japan titles.

This isn't sprite work, that background is just a weirdly stretched and bitcrushed image of a skyline.

I think the aesthetic is lazy and poorly done. Probably gonna be a pass for me.

The purple and orange walkway is the only thing that looks somewhat on par with the character sprites (only cause they also look NES accurate). The cross-shaped gear is too simplistically detailed(and IMO, they should've ditched the black outline,a it makes it more cartoony looking), and the red support beams of the building have this sorta extremely light rust texture overlayed on them, trying to give them more detail, but given how simplistic they are without it, and how the detail looks way different from anything else, it just looks like ass. Then, of course, the background... woof indeed.

Hard Corps Uprising is the best Contra.

This game looks sort of ugly and I don't think the original Double Dragon is really something to aspire to, but I'm at least somewhat interested in seeing Arc try their hand at classic-style action games.

All things considered, it'd probably be fun to play so long as they tone done those platforming mechanics they shoehorned into DD2.

Balls in your court now, Tecmo. Time for Ryu Hayabusa the Ninja Dragon to come back and revive the cinematic 8-bit action platformer!

Gameplay wise it's not bad. I still prefer the Genesis Contra Hard Corps, but the art style actually ruined it for me. I kind of hated that generic anime style. I liked the super masculine contra style from the 80s-90s.

I just finished playing through Double Dragon Neon (PC version this time) and while I loved the music and thought the gameplay was fun, the tone made me mad. They basically turned the characters into 80s goofballs and like Bill & Ted. I thought that was disrespectful to the series and didn't fit at all.

THIS is right up my alley. Double Dragon II is my favorite NES beat em up and I can't tell you how many times I've beaten the game. This looks like a perfect sequel. New levels, more moves, new characters and the right tone. Day 1!

YAAASS!!!. It better have the kneebuster (aka hair pull kick) in it unlike Neon. Hey lets not put in the move that most people identify with the IP. EDIT: NES Double Dragon 2 is my favorite of the series (and yes I played Super Double Dragon and the GBA game that Atlus published) so anything that looks to be an extention of that particular vibe is an A+ n my book.

Assuming you meant pay to win, what Arcade beat em up from back then wasn't?

You had to pay the quarter to play but if you wanted extra health , weapons or lives you had to pay extra. The game didn't have life or weapon drops.

It says something that no matter what, after multiple releases, Double Dragon II is still the one I mentally go back to when I think of "Best Double Dragon". And I actually enjoy DDIII for what it is, and qute like Neo, too!

JUst don't mention Gravity's DDII game from a few years back on XBLA:

It's funny, because the non-beat-em-up parts of DDII (and 1) NES never seemed necessary. I don't think the designers agree, but I wonder if the platforming and spike pits ever really WORKED for anyone. I like the endless pits, I liked things like the Helicopter battle, but platforming over single-hit deaths just seemed like a desperate need to add variety to gameplay.

The air juggling shown in the trailer is... pretty cool, but also feels pretty extraneous? It'll look cool, but do I really need it? *shrug* I'm glad our classic hair pull is here, and I love seeing some new enemies.

And for those who want something a bit more updated in art, River City Ransom Underground is still on the way, and contines to look very great.

They released some Character Spotlight videos over the past few weeks:
Bonus: Live Action Short - Featuring Live action Abobo!

I love the fact that DD and RCR franchises have loads of people making their own takes on them. The existence of 1 gam here or there doesn't means something else different can't also exist. We have Kunio-Kun Sports games and RPGs, sequels to the western takes on the franchises, multiple takes on Double Dragon by a variety of devs... I welcome them all, as they help keep the genre and series alive.

Oh, and for anyone lookin for more 16 bit lookin brawlers on Steam, 99vidas game came out the other day, too:

I've enjoyed my time with it, though that's commentary for another thread... definitely worth lookin into, though.

At any rate, a DDIV that picks up after II, and for an in-expensive price, is a nice cap to 2016 to me. I look forward to giving it a shot in the new year!

I hate this game, I really do, it's to me the worst Double Dragon game ever made.

It looks bad, runs bad, plays bad, and it's just, so bad!

Haha, yeah, it really ran horribly. If they nailed the gameplay, I'd have been able to accept it as a more straightforward take on DDII, to compliment Neon... but it's just... nasty. I'd rather go back and play Gekido!

Well, they've got to start somewhere. A brand new Double Dragon isn't exactly the most in-demand concept right now (and games like DD Neon and Scott Pilgrim and Double Dragon Advance were enjoyed but did little to reignite the subgenre,) and remakes of the NES or Arcade games could have done something but probably would have fired up confusion since there's not quite a definitive best-DD. An inexpensive but interesting hybrid NES-type game is a fun concept to play with, DD2 was an awesome, awesome game and needs more games like it (DD3 NES didn't do the job, unfortunately,) the team seem excited to put their names on it, and the franchise can go pretty much anywhere still from here.

Arc System Works has taken some careful but deliberate steps in handling the Kunio-Kun series (some remakes, some semi-sequels, some experimentation in style, all consistently moving the brand slowly out of retirement) and hopefully DD has a gameplan as well. Just slamming into one great "the sequel we always wanted" game with either brand would have made many of us happy as hell, but I can kind of see why they've taken a more measured approach.

This DD2 parody needs to included in this thread.......

Now if you can pull moves off like that in this new game!!

Oh and also DD2 second level music Easy Lover by Phil Collins......

Haha. No wonder I've been a secret Phil Collins fan most of my life.

And you guys dissing DD2, one of the greatest feelings and sensation in gaming is when you successfully land that flying knee.

DD2 is one of the few games my 6 year old son and I played to completion on the NES classic (using the continue codes).

Looking forward to this as long as there is a dedicated jump button.

Well... I'm happy for those who wanted something like this and the idea is really cool on paper, but... That didn't look good

I admire this company's cojones. Firstly, they decided to call it Double Dragon 4. I don't think there's ever been a numbered sequel this many years apart. Secondly, the new footage is only Bimmy and Jimmy beating up on women.

I never really liked the NES DD look, would've preferred if they went with something similar to Super instead.

This is cool, but I wish they followed in the footsteps of double dragon advance, a souped up version of the arcade game with NESDD+DD2+new moves. Already unenthused by seeing platforming here, the single worst aspect of DD games.

With Double Dragon 2 included in the NES mini the chances DD4 being a Nintendo Switch game are at 99.99%.

lol. There's VERY low demographic crossover between anyone old enough to have played Double Dragon 2 at launch and anyone actually planning on buying the switch.
