Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Well, I think I finally picked up my last game with Witness. Unless people clamor more about less known and highly discounted games from now until the end of the sale!

No one is banned ever! If someone messes up, the worst case scenario is that they don't get properly entered into that giveaway.

I did write the code on my own, although a handful of people have contributed art for banners and stuff! Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad people can use something I made to spread happiness, cheer, and sharing.

I'm not sure if you handle this, but when you click the link to send modbot a message on mobile it just takes you to your inbox instead of a pop up or a new page to send a message if that makes sense

Devil Daggers is insanely fun. If any of you are active players, shoot me a PM with your steam name so I have some scores to match up/watch the replay of.

What are you alls high scores? I just got 130k after about an hour and a half of overall play, feelsgoodman

Looking to pick something up in the winter sale RPGish wise.

I'm currently playing Pillars of Eternity but taking a break, I can only take so much of the game at a time. It's weird, I really really like it but I get into it deep. I think I just finished chapter 2 and I have something like 80 hours lol.

Anyway, I grew up on jrpgs, have been branching away from those as they're not hitting the spots I need anymore. I think part of it is some lengthy side stuff in the game. I've wondered about Skyrim, or maybe picking up Witcher 3? I've heard from various things that both games have down sides to them.

I'm also thinking of getting Doom / Hitman. Doom for the crazy fun I've heard and Hitman to hit my sneaking itch. I've missed out on the crazy cheap Hitman deals, oh well.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hitman and Doom are both excellent!

Skyrim or Witcher 3. Best way I can describe both these excellent games:

  • Skyrim is more Lord Of The Rings
  • Witcher 3 is more Game of Thrones
I prefer W3 by a mile, but either game is a great choice.

By the way, there were some errors processing your keys...
Note: The key you added for Mystery Gift was already listed in ModBot from a previous giveaway of yours, but was not taken. Updating key info to match new giveaway.

Go home Modbot, you are drunk. You caused a scene at dinner and ruined Christmas.

How "reliable" are Steam user reviews score aggregates? How does it compare to Metacritic scores? Is there any good method to check if a game is bad/average/good/great at a glance?

The Witness. Worth it? I like puzzle games and solving puzzles for puzzles' sake and the satisfaction that comes with that but I'm worried the length will wear me out and I'll get bored if the puzzles aren't engaging enough.

I've really soured on the game as times gone on, but during my playthrough i was completely hooked and its defiantly something puzzle fans should try.

Gonna post this over in the hidden gems thread but wanted to plug Renowned Explorers. It's a fun experience with a surprising amount of strategic and tactical depth.

It's not too hard if you get the right party, but it's still pretty challenging to play. A surprise hit for me and a lot of fun. DLC not needed to enjoy the game but if you like it I suppose the DLC would be a great addition.

In other news, I'm trying to decide what to spend my Xmas Steam dollars on -- these are all high priced items that were on my list. I've got about 100 bucks, so at max I can get 1 or 2 of them (not planning on spending a large amount of my own money).

Tyranny - 40.49
Planet Coaster - 38.24
Xenoverse 2 - 37.49
Civ VI - 53.99

Thoughts from those that picked these up recently? I'm kind of leaning towards ones with bigger discounts, but I'm still unsure. The alternate of course is to pass on all of these and just buy them later on down the line. But, where's the fun in that. Make a case for why I should choose one or the other!

My game of the year. It ended up transcending being a puzzle game for me, it tries to convey something very specific to the player and does so brilliantly. If you're expecting a story, you will be disappointed though. If it was a book, it would be more like an educational book than a story book.

Can you explain what you soured on? Was it something that only happened after you beat it?

The game is very addicting, but i dont think thats because it is fun. I think i was just addicted to that feeling of "learning".
Its like the game has no heart, instead is mechanically focused on making the player feel satisfied.

Tell me why I shouldn't buy the Prologue + Episode 1 package of Hitman. Don't have the money for the full experience nor do I want the full experience before I tested if I even like the game.

Only thing I can think of is if you have an older CPU your performance may be all over the place in certain areas.

It wold be weird not to get the full experience. A lot of the fun is replaying the same maps multiple times and completing challenges. You kinda want the other content to not get bored of playing one map all the time. If you just want to dabble in Hitman then it guess it's fine but but prologue isn't great but Episode 1 is pretty good.

I have the one in the minium specs from the shop site.

I want to dabble a little bit in the game before I commit to the whole season. I would pick up the rest during the summer sale or sometime other.

Well maybe someone else can shed some light on performance, but I have an i5 4690k and sometimes it would be 60fps, sometimes 40, sometimes worse. That's just on the prologue. I also didn't go crazy with the graphics settings.

Locking it to 30fps would probably do you fine though.

Can't be solved, it's a problem with the mobile site's PM functionality.

I find it funny that I'm just learning about the Frog Fractions 2 'game within a game' stuff as Steam's voting for today is 'Game Within A Game'

IT WAS PLANNED.

Is Phantom Brave any good? It hasn't got a very good sale price, but I've been eying it for a while.

I haven't played the Disgaea series before but I really loved the Final Fantasy Tactics series, both PS1/PSP & the GBA/DS games.

This is a scheduled automated repost on behalf of Orgen, who is running this raffle.

I've worn out my old xbox one controller to the point that the left analog is sticking is different directions, was thinking of grabbing a new one which ones come with bluetooth atm?

Finished the Assault Android Cactus campaign, the last couple of bosses really put a sour taste in my mouth. I still liked the game, and for people that like to replay levels for score or play infinite modes or something (which the game unlocks, also a boss rush mode) it probably has a lot of content. Still liked it tho, but the initial rush in that first hour was quite deflated in the second hour (yeah its pretty short)

I haven't played the Disgaea series before but I really loved the Final Fantasy Tactics series, both PS1/PSP & the GBA/DS games.

It's technically similar to Disgaea, other than the fact Ash is a ghost and 'times out' after a number of turns. (Not a spoiler, it's literally said in the introduction)

Very colorful, expect more of the same kinds of things.

I want to dabble a little bit in the game before I commit to the whole season. I would pick up the rest during the summer sale or sometime other.

I think that's sound, I did the same thing. Got the Intro pack in the Fall sale, and was STARVING for the rest within two weeks. Got the upgrade pack from Gamestop last week and still haven't moved past the 2nd level cause I'm just soaking it all up (almost 30 hours played so far). If you aren't sure you'll be down with the gameplay the Intro pack is a great way to test the waters, only thing is it won't be on deep discount again for a long couple of months. Worth noting that there is content locked to the Upgrade pack specifically that you don't get if you buy the levels piecemeal, and there also isn't a discount for the Upgrade pack if you already own some of levels.

I'm thinking of getting a JRPG but I'm not entirely sure which of the following to get:

Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X + X-2
I Am Setsuna

I'm thinking of saving IX until later, working my way throughout the franchise backwards for now (not sure I'm in a mood for kinda-old-school atm). Is X + X-2 still awesome even if I vaguely remember some of the ending I've learned about in the past?

Really curious about I Am Setsuna, though, so I might get that regardless.

I heard Setsuna was quite short but someone that played it might confirm that, considering the discount is quite small.

If I like the Intro Pack enough I'll probably buy the upgrade in the next sale. If it doesn't go down in price then I don't care about an Euro or two. But I really want to try it because everything I saw so far looked great.

Is Phantom Brave any good?
It's my favourite Nippon Ichi game. I love it.

Wrote this Steam review about it:

Phantom Brave is Nippon Ichi's most unique and innovative SRPG, and my personal favourite of theirs. It's also pobably their most serious in terms of story, even though there are still many comedic moments in that more dramatic overall framework.

However, what makes the game unique are really its gameplay systems, and most directly 3 of its features:
  • Free movement and positioning on the map - unlike in most SRPGs, particularly those developed in Japan, you are not bound to a grid, or hexes, or any other fixed partitioning. This also means that all spells and attacks have ranges which are expressed in 3D shapes, not sets of tiles.
  • All your units except Marona are Phantoms which are "confined" into objects on the battlefield. Depending on which objects you use this causes significant effects on stats. Furthermore, phantoms only remain on the battlefield for a limited number of turns (depending on some factors).
  • Both battlefield objects and units can be equipped as items, and often grant item-specific skills.
There's more to it of course, including the N1 staple character and item leveling, as well as a random dungeon generation system, and so on and so forth. But the 3 points above are what make it very unique even in the space of N1 SRPGs.

The PC version of the game is marketed as DEFINITIVE, and as far as I can tell that is absolutely the case. It includes all the content from all previous releases (including dual audio tracks), supports arbitrary resolutions and 60 FPS, and includes recreated HD UI graphics as well high-res 2D art. Both mouse/keyboard and gamepad controls are supported and work well. Outside of recreating all the sprites - which is understandably out of scope for a port such as this - it's about as great a version of Phantom Brave as we are ever likely to get.

In addition to the unique gamplay, the game also features a fantastic soundtrack, probably one of the best in any N1 game. Overall, it's a must play for all SRPG fans, especially those who have not played any of the game's previous versions.

I think this review is actually better though :P

the only one i played was 9, and is soo good

but seriously tho... where's my Dragon Quest Builders? We get that trash musou game and not the actual good one.

I feel somehow this is JaseC's fault, or Australia's as a whole, but im not sure how yet.

I have both GoNNER and N++ in my cart now, but I feel like I probably should only get either one of them. Any thoughts?

That's a tough one. Depends on how much you enjoy platformers. There are free web versions of N you can try. If you find yourself enjoying its brand of punishment, go for it.

Gonner is a more casual affair, but excellent in its own right. There's a smidgen of platforming, but its more dodging enemies and skillfully chaining combos of kills.
