Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

For years now I've contemplated Starbound, but have just never pulled the trigger - part of me feels I just won't be able to get into it. I love space games - have around 100 hours in No Man's Sky and Elite: Dangerous each. I enjoyed minecraft from a generate world - explore surroundings and build a small shack aspect, but I feel for this type of game I need people to play with and I won't have anyone.

How good is Starbound, really?

I've played a ton of starbound. I find it a lot of fun. I bought it in EA for 15usd, I got more than my money's worth. The base content is really expansive and then there is also a ton of modded content.

Oh God am I really doing this

Talk me out of it

If I'm gong to buy a game called Rimworld I'd rather it be a vn <rimshot>

So NieR PC release date is still a closely guarded secret, correct?

But it does, in the form of mad-libs style artwork descriptions, a decent amount of which are of the lewd variety.

I'm getting everything set up for the SteamGAF GOTY voting that will take place starting next week. I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with as their favorite game on Steam in 2016.

It will be great to see the results in March.

And even greater to see the results be ignored in MRORANGE's monthly OPs in favor of 2014.

I dunno bruv. You're likely to see A LOT of varied listing that the games with the most votes might get votes in the double digits only. There were A LOT of good games this year, but the likeliest candidates to be in the list include Hitman, Planet Coaster, DOOM & XCOM 2 to name a few.
Still interested to see what we'll get tho.

The Witness cannot lose. It had the perfect price point for people to try it during these sales. And people who bought it full price won't forget to vote for it.

  • Hitman: too expensive if you missed the $15 deal
  • Planet Coaster: too niche and too expensive
  • DOOM: might be GOTY
  • XCOM 2: it seems most people forgot it

Starbound is one of my biggest gaming disappointments in recent years. I loved terraria, and was really looking forward to Starbound. It not even bad, but terraria still does everything better than it. The quests it has you doing are completely uninteresting, the combat doesn't feel as good, etc. If you've done everything in terraria and still want more, I guess give it a shot, but otherwise I'd say just play more of that.

The Witness will be lucky to get into the top 5. Many people didn't play it because they thought it was 'too expensive for an indie game'. And it came out pretty early in the year so it's kind of a distant memory for those who did play it.

It is $19.99 right now. I believe people have bought it.

I own Terraria, but have never played it because by the time I owned it (via bundle, maybe?) I knew Starbound was coming and the space theming had me more excited I didn't want to burn out from the possible similar gameplay. But, then I never played either and still feel like I'm not too entranced to jump in. I love sandbox, I love space, I love exploration, but I just don't have a burning desire.

You did real good there!

I did the tutorial for Endless Legend and felt completely lost and overwhelmed. But I'm already 20 hours in to Elite Dangerous and I don't feel like it's less complex so...I guess I'm getting taken for a ride with that and I'll return to Endless Legend in the future.

Wait, for real? Ugh, I just bought it. Would less than 2 hours be enough to give me a feel of the problems you're talking about?

Not sure why modbot didn't recognise them both as Steam keys or what that apple icon is but definitely Steam keys from Humble Bundle :)

Typically modbot looks for that stuff at the beginning or end of names but maybe I have the iOS platform detection done incorrectly. Whoops!

thats a lot of anime in my cart. Man Puncher would be proud.

or aroused.

I don't know if this was widely known, but I was buying the Trials games, and I had Trials Fusion the Max Edition in my cart, and when I added Trials of the Blood Dragon to my cart the price of Trials Fusion dropped by ten dollars. It was a pretty nice surprise and I don't see any mention of a discount on either of the games store pages.

I'm surprised no one replied to this. Instead of a $21 pack, it comes out to $11.

Amongst several other backlog additions, I bought DXMD.

Yesterday I finally fired it up. And while it's good, something is off with the controls. I played DXHR on PS3 and PC, and everything felt smooth and intuitive. It does not feel that way in DXMD at all.

it will be in the top sellers list for 3 weeks after launch

guaranteed.

You're 100% correct. Survive is going to sell, though I bet a lot of people will refund it.

The only thing that would interest me is The Legacy Collection on Steam or a remake of Metal Gear 1+2.

Well, posted my votes on the general gaf goty thread and that same list is going to be my steamgaf goty votes as well.
Well, a slightly truncated version if we do top 5 like last year.

Probably at least somewhat. Part of it is that I just don't think doing stuff feels as good as in terraria, you could tell if you feel the same right away. Other stuff takes longer, like noticing that they are giving you the same quests over and over, or that the randomized enemies aren't all that different from each other. I also much preferred the way progression works in terraria.

I will say that if you are really into building stuff, Starbound is probably better for that. There are more aesthetic themes to choose from, lots of decorations you'll want to dig up and stick in your ship or whatever. I never got too deep into that stuff in either game though. And like I said, it isn't bad, I just don't think it compares well to its predecessor.
