Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Steam trading thread seems to be dead, so does anyone want to trade sale cards? Looking for 3 of Just 5 More Minutes and I have these to trade:

Game Within a Game x3
Villain Most in Need of a Hug x3
I Thought This Game Was Cool x3
Whoooaaaaaaa, dude! x2
Game Within a Game x6
Best Use of a Farm Animal x1

do you guys think the event cards will be cheaper closer to the expiration deadline or i should i buy them now? i have 3/9 foil so i need to decide whether to sell them or buy the 6 cards i need

I still haven't played Rise of the Tomb Raider. Worth 30 bucks?

I don't think so, very disappointed in it in the end. Looks nice most of the time, but I just wasn't really having a ton of fun most of the time. Greatly preferred the reboot, and preferred the Legend trilogy even more.

After Rogue One, I'm looking for a Star Wars game to play. Already have KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 and I'm limited to games playable on Mac.

With that in mind, am I better off buying the Jedi Knight Bundle (Dark Forces, Jedi Academy, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast and Dark Forces II) for 5€ (only Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast are playable on Mac) or The Force Unleashed - Ultimate Sith Edition for 5€?

Last thing I have to decide before I proceed to checkout. Will probably buy:
Hotline Miami 2
Undertale
Braid
Saturday Morning RPG
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Psychonauts
Transistor

Get Outcast and Academy. The lightsaber combat from the Jedi Knight games is a million times better than The Force Unleashed.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance predicted everything...

Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy are amazing games, so I'd go with that. The former is one of my favourite Star Wars games ever, actually. (The others in that pack are good as well, if you ever get a chance; dated visually, but they still hold up.)

Star Wars: The Force Unleaashed is a mediocre action game in comparison... Though I admit I've never played it.

Let's assume for a second that no DLC sells, and also that all sales are in the US and in USD.

Stardew Valley is at about 2 million copies. Let's subtract 75,000 copies for Humble Monthly Bundle and 10% of their sales for external key activations (by review split, 3% of reviews are based on external key activations). So that leaves 1.725 million copies. It's $15 by default, and has been on sale for $10 a few times. Let's say 250,000 copies sold at $10 and the rest at $15. Under these reasonable assumptions, that gives you ~$25 million in revenue.

Stellaris is at about 750,000 copies. Let's subtract again 10% of the sales for external key activations, but it was not in the monthly (by reviews, 20%). So 675,000 copies. The discounts have been $30 and $27. Let's say around 100,000 copies at a discount, and averaging $30 with the discount, the remaining at $40. That gives you ~$25 million in revenue.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is at about 1.3 million copies. -20% this time for external key activations (by reviews, 27%). 1 million copies sold on Steam. It's had several discounts, including multiple discounts at 50% off, and it's racked up a lot of sales on discount. Let's say 40% of copies copies sold on discount at an average of $40, the rest at $60. That's ~$50 million.

Doom has sold 1.6 million copies. 40% of their reviews are external (deep discounts at other sites), so let's subtract about 1/3rd of this to 1.1 million copies. It's been on sale many times and extensively, including at $40, $30, and $20... and currently at $17. Sales account for at least 40-50% of the sales. Let's assume 50% at $30 and 50% at $60. That's ~$50 million.

Now, looking at the easiest title to calculate in the Platinum tier. No Man's Sky has sold about 800,000 copies at about $60 on average with almost no external activation. The two sales have both been $40 and there is no suggestion that they've moved significant copies on sale. That gets you ~$50 million. So the cutoff between Gold and Platinum is around $50 million given that two ~$50 million titles are in Gold and one in Platinum.

Planet Coaster is in Silver. It released very recently and although it is at 500,000 copies now, at least 400,000 copies of those have sold in the last two months. By reviews about 20% are external key activations, let's say 10-15% of sales are external. So 430,000-ish copies on Steam. And let's say about 33% sold at $40 and the rest at $45, so basically sales have not materially impacted revenue. That gets us to about ~$18 million in revenue.

Far Cry Primal. 300,000 copies. Ubisoft does not sell Steam keys off Steam, so 100% of sales are on Steam. I'd say discounts account for ~40% of sales and average $30 or so. That's $15 million in revenue.

Factorio. 700,000 copies, -10% for external sales, no discounts ever. 630,000*20 = $12.5 million in revenue.

In summary, based on the assumptions above, we have a bronze title around $12.5 million in revenue, we have two Silver titles in >$15,000,000 and <$20,000,000, three Gold titles in $20,000,000-50,000,000, and a Platinum title around $50,000,000. My best guess is that the cutoffs are the following: Bronze = #100 (at least 5 million dollars) - $10-12 million. Silver = $12-20 million. Gold = $20-50 million. Platinum = >$50 million. You can lower each cutoff by a bit if you want to try to model foreign currency sales. All of these are napkin math, and you can fiddle with all of the assumptions yourself.

I'm sure Sergey at SteamSpy can use his data on sales accumulation during sales to get more reliable figures.

I got $42 in steam wallet left. What should i buy outta of my cart?

Elite: Dangerous - $ 26.79
Crashlands - $ 11.21
Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition - $ 7.49
The Wolf Among Us - $ 6.99
The Talos Principle - $ 10.99
Terraria - $ 6.59
Ultimate Chicken Horse - $ 11.21
Tricky Towers - $ 8.49
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - $ 15.99
Batman: The Telltale Series - $ 18.75

I have an rx 470 and it'll be running at 1080p.

This guy has exactly your set-up, 3570K and RX 470. He has everything maxed out on Ultra at 1080p, except for Nvidia's HairWorks. Apparently it runs around 65-70fps outside, around 60-65 inside Novigrad (the biggest and most dense city in the game), and drops to around 45/50 during combat with many enemies.

Dropping a few settings to High would probably smoothen that combat to around 60.

Man, I forgot all about this 15 day hold thing on selling cards. At least the things expire in February instead of right after the sale.

Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition - $ 7.49
The Wolf Among Us - $ 6.99

I can recommend these two to pretty much anyone. Amazing games. The Wolf Among Us is probably Telltales best game and Dragon: Age Origins is a classic

dropping Shadows & Foliage Visibility would make the biggest gains I believe

Steam keeps crashing on me every time Dead Secret shows up in my discovery queue. I haven't been able to get cards all sale because of this.

That's exactly my point, and it has nothing to do with having Denuvo or not.

No, the point is that publishers insist on using things like Denuvo because they still stupidly consider all PC gamers pirates, but Witcher 3 (and other good games) still sell just fine without it.

The original person I replied to was basically saying that Witcher 3 sold better than other games because it didn't have DRM.

Your post is 100% right.

Damn, picked up Brigador yesterday and have been really enjoying it. Controls are satisfying as hell, game looks gorgeous, and that soundtrack is incredible

Not bad. Thank you for finding that video and letting me know about how it runs, it helped me solidify a purchase!

Is this the right thread to ask for recommendations or should I do it in that "Hidden Gems" thread? Would like to make a small pick up to keep my tradition of buying at least something during each major sale (and also to keep my account marked as eligible for market purchases), but not sure what to get.

Planning to start Virginia soon. Anyone here played it? HLTB says it's ~2 hours, is it worth doing the whole thing in one sitting?

Get Hexcells or Squarecells. They're good puzzle games under a buck each.

This happened to me. I got past it by restarting Steam and clicking the next button as fast as possible as soon as it loaded in my queue.
