During gamescom 2016 year they showed Scalebound in private showings.

They showed off something called "Dragon Link", something that they, as far as I know, haven't shown to the public ever and now possibly never will. Up until that point they only showed fairly basic combat that looked great but more in the vein of Dragon's Dogma and less like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. That's why many people used to Kamiya's games were pretty disappointed. And then they showed Dragon Link. It's a button you hold and then the camera switched into First Person Mode...and you controlled the dragon. So then you controlled the Dragon from Drew's perspective, which still looks HUGE because the camera doesn't zoom out but goes into first person and you fight against another huge Monster. And then they started comboing. They fluidly switched from Drew to the Dragon to Drew by holding or not holding the Dragon Link button.

Think the weapon system of DmC but instead of holding a button to switch to a certain weapon you hold a button to switch to a fucking dragon. So these two characters juggled that huge monkey enemy into the air with all the usual attacks and combos you know from Platinum Games only it was A HUGE GODDAMN DRAGON DOING THE COMBOS. There was a combo counter and a rating and everything. It was their direct answer to the "Where is the Platinum action?" question.

It looked fucking great and as far as I'm aware they have never released that footage, just as they never showed the HUGE array of customising options and RPG features.

I'm so mad about this cancellation. Goddamnit.

God, this sounds amazing. Fuck this cancellation.

Has Microsoft ever sold one of their IPs off? Probably not right?

Sure would be a nice goodwill move if they gave it all back to Platinum.

That sort of stuff doesn't happen.

Why are they owning the IP if they dont want to do everything with it, they could easily give them away so other gamers can be happy that the IP is alive.

Why does anyone care about an IP for a game that never came out? Just as easy to come up with a new name, the brand isn't established.

But companies don't just sell off their IPs. They might outsource or license them but they don't sell them. IPs add value to your portfolio.

Why would they have the project greenlit and spend such a period in development only to do that?

Priorities changed. It was greenlight when MS thought the XBO was going to be a success and had completely different direction for their games division. Many things have happened in the interim, and they no longer care about a single player game that offers minimal upside to their bottom line or their hardware sales. Evidenced by them apparently stopping payment a year ago by setting absurd milestones to allow them to get out of payment.

I feel even sadder that this is gone now that I played the last gaurdian.

Would have loved to have a Trico that was just a comics style badass.

What in the FUCK

I was one of the people who thought Scalebound looked hella rough but I was still majorly interested in it just due to Kamiya and the concept.

Fuck I wish we had seen this

Because maybe they can salvage something from it down the road than just handing over all the assets to another company. It's smarter to do that sometimes, especially if you own the assists outright.

That is some bullshit. Why would no game be better for Xbox owners than, say, a delayed one.

Phil is a fucking quitter

Disagree entirely with that view. The last thing you want to do is get in the habit of promoting these overly long development efforts without enough meaningful internal progress, or obviously without much better public showings that, at the very least, appropriately excited gamers to a strong enough degree to warrant waiting even longer. If the game is not meeting expectations you have to make a tough decision. Now everyone here knows full well that if this game was looking so crazy that it was constantly in the discussion for game of the show, or was simply just looking like a title that may actually live up to the amazing pedigree behind it, there's no way Microsoft could have, or would have, canceled it.

And, really, I don't know, but it looked like every once in a while you hear about platinum working on a new project or something, and I wonder if Microsoft somehow felt this other stuff was more or less distracting from work on Scalebound. While I never felt it would be a problem, it did cross my mind at times that Platinum seems a little busy considering they have that huge game they're working on.

By the way, how long do you guys anticipate it will be before way better gameplay footage of Scalebound is released, making people even angrier at the cancellation? You know it's likely to happen.

Literally the only game that made me interested in XB1. Hope Platinum and Kamiya can pull through on this. How many times can one man be fucked over by this industry?

Funded development tends to have a lower risk because it's not your money. I'd have to look to find them, but I definitely know there's some articles or podcasts where a studio owner/head peels back the curtain enough to explain why sometimes they take these kinds of contracted jobs to keep the lights on while they try and get their own internal IP off the ground.

There is the nasty case of Alien: Colonial Marines where GearBox was accused of funneling money paid to them by Sega for that game and was instead diverted to Borderlands 2.
Oh lower. Sure. It's still pretty awful news considering half the studio was working on this game.

The definition should be whatever the risk assessment and consultation company and Microsoft labeled the game as being. Chances are this whole situation is a culmination of a lot of things and not just one thing. Could be contracts, could be timelines not being kept to and it could be that seeing the game through development with full marketing and post launch oversight was much more of a risk and detrimental to microsofts bottom line than they were comfortable risking. It was probably vastly cheaper to cut it off at the legs now and write it off as a loss they could recoup from than to put out a stinker of a game with no chance of recouping anything near development costs let alone any post production expenses.

Game industry is wicked.

Games die everyday B.

This guy directed all time classics like Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 1 and Bayonetta. What more can you do to get a wild card from Microsoft? Kamiya could have been an exclusive Kojima for MS if they played their cards well. Look at Death Stranding for the PS4. This is the road that MS should have taken with Scalebound with a legendary japanese director.

That sounds cool and all, but not as COOL as Microsoft owning LinkedIn to the sum of 10 Minecraft purchases!!! #better4Xboxgamers

Sony's E3 2018: The trailer for God of War: Baby Daddy finishes playing and as the lights comes up Shu Yoshida appears and begins talking to the crowd about fostering the best talent in the world and trying to make the fan's dreams come true. He then introduces Hideki Kamiya onto the stage for him to introduce the fruits of Sony and Platinum Games collaboration, LEGEND OF THE DRAGOON.

An open world AAA action RPG focusing on character action, customization, deep RPG elements, and of course playing as a dragon. ;D

No ill will but fuck all MS fans .. is how I just read this. I mean come on, how about waiting for the actual details to come through first?

What I meant is that I hold nothing against Xbox fans, and have nothing against devs and their games: I've played some Microsoft games too in the past, like Halo, which was amazing. That said, Microsoft has pushed in the past and is currently pushing stuff that IMO hurts the industry as a whole, or me as a gamer in particular, even though I don't buy Xbox systems (always online, paying for online, microtransactions, forcing studios to work on one IP only forever, TV, shoehorned multiplayer in everything, games as service, etc.); hence I can't just shrug it off and say whatever.

Ok correct if Im wrong but couldnt MS just do with Scalebound what Sony did to RIME?
"Your game, your problem" and then just leave Platinum to find a new publisher and release the game ?

The Wonderful 101 metacritic isn't even reflective of the game's quality either imo. As far as I'm concerned it's 9/10 game and one of the my all-time favourites.

It's a 10/10. It just exudes fun, awesomeness and a love of video games. It's a gift that people didn't deserve. 'm probably gonna replay it after hearing this bummer news.

I mean, Sony is pretty aware of the general mood of the more hardcore gamers. It wouldn't surprise me of they went to Platinum and said "Sucks, but wanna make a game with us?" and then bring that up at an E3 with huge fanfare. I mean, they picked up From for Bloodborne after DS1 abd DS1 was sucessful, very even, but no CoD or anything. Wouldn't surprise me if they did something like that again.

See also: how they wrote Kojima a blank check after his very public shitcanning from Konami. It's the sort of move where the goodwill they gain from the hardcore crowd makes it worth it even if the game itself doesn't make a profit. Honestly, I'm surprised we haven't seen a Platinum PS4 exclusive already, it would be completely in line with a lot of the other moves they made this gen.

Ugh... man, this absolutely blows. Especially for those who wanted a game from a JP dev on their Xbox that isn't Forza, Gears, or Halo. A little variety doesn't hurt. Makes me long for the days of Lost Odyssey, Fable, and Blue Dragon.

I almost wonder why the push for Scorpio when exclusives for their flagship console are dwindling... unless they have some explosive announcements for E3 regarding new partnerships.

Yup, I remember this, which is why I said the game had potential. A lot of people were throwing shade at a game that didn't show its full potential.

I don't think Microsoft is some evil-ass company looking to screw their partners over. There's surely two sides to this drama, which is easier to believe considering the game never looked all that great and most of the buzz was due to Kamiya's involvement rather than anything they actually showed of the game proper.
