Everwild Cancelled

Wikipedia says Battletoads 2020 was the last game they made?
Sea of Thievs was released in 2018. 7 years ago?
Collecting a paycheck for 5 years. Come into work. Sit at a computer, Get paid.
Checking wiki, Battletoads says it was mainly developed by Dlalal Studios too.

Since Xbox One, they've just made KI and Sea of Thieves as their big hitters. I wouldnt consider Kinect Sports Rivals, Rare Replay or Battletoads exactly budget busting games in development.

So really, since 2013 they've just made KI and Sea of Thieves. That's it. It looks like they blew their load on Everwild which is now axed. That game has been in dev since Xbox One days.

Ain't that the game that turned The Dark Queen from a sexy evil lady to whatever the fuck this is?

This cancellation has been probably for the best. :goog_relieved:

People complain so much about Naughty Dog, but at least they released TLOU 2 in 2020 and will have Intergalactic soon.

Rare has not released ANY game in the last 7.5 years and likely won't for the next 2.5 years either. So a game studio with no game IN A DECADE.

Let that sink in.

I doubt Everwild is the last new IP being developed on that is cancelled today. Microsoft is going to shift focus to big established IPs, is my guess.

Microsoft buying rare is one of the biggest gaming disasters in history. Took one of the most iconic devs of all time and completely ruined them. They went from banjo kazooie, perfect dark, conkers bad fur day, etc to kinect shit and they never recovered.
Sea of Thieves is probably the most successfull microsoft game of the past 10 years.

I wonder how many of the Microsoft projects we have announced that will ever see the light of the day.
That early xbox series showcase is nothing but a joke in hindsight. Announcements made way too early. State of decay 3 has been missing in action and we've yet to see Fable released yet while there is talk of a new gen.

Yep. Very likely.

Most of ABK will be gutted and shifted to COD factory. They have already canceled Blizzard's new IP in the last layoff.

Other new IPs will get similar treatment, as Xbox becomes more like Ubisoft that only relies on milking big IPs: Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, etc.

Insane. Sea of Thieves has been a massive success, hasn't it? I always thought Everwild looked really promising but was overthinking the gameplay (I think they wanted the game to deal with protecting nature while having no combat). I'm shocked the project has been deemed to not be salvageable.

For people hungering for Rare-like games, I think Yooka-Replaylee is looking extremely good.

The first reveal trailer was somewhat cool, with a pleasant aesthetic, but the moment they started admitting that it was made entirely on "vibes" and they had no idea what the game would become exactly I knew there was no point on keeping track of the project and that this would happen sooner or later.

This doesn't surprise me….but it does sadden me. Would have liked to see where this game was going.
They have been making the game for how many years now ? not a single footage outside of reveal ( which didn't have any identity ).

Rare is gone. The talent is long gone. The writing was on the wall ever since Sea of thieves was released, and nothing ever since.

such a shame because they had a big name when they were under Nintendo. went from one of the top developers of all time to ... shit under MS. figures.

Has Rare been rumored to have any other projects being worked along side this game? I think a single-player game set in the Sea of Thieves world would be a safe bet for a successful project. I was under the impression Sea of Thieves has sold a lot of copies. I've seen people express interest in the game for years but not dive in due to not being interested in online multiplayer games. With an established fanbase, I think another game set in that world, exploring it from a single-player angle has a lot of potential to be good and financially successful.

I think Activision made things worse actually.
I used to say that but Activision getting acquired didn't make Xbox hardware to stop selling, Gamepass to start stalling, their game sales to vanish. That was always going to happen.

If they didn't have that COD money things would look a lot worse.

And that's a major problem with media as a whole. Which they should be lucky to begin with they even get green lit funding for wing and prayer napkin math.

Fine to go ahead and make it if it's cheap and easy. IMO, not the right thing to do with big budgets, big teams and 10 years of dev time. But corporations and investment companies seem to be really lenient when it comes to tech, movies and games to roll the dice on unproven content - even ones which seems the team doesnt even know what to do with it yet. And that's some crazy product strategy IMO.

Game had been restarted so many times, it was bound to happen
Nevertheless, it is ironic that a studio that has built one of the most successful long-standing brands from scratch is affected. If they don't even have the room to take loops, you can imagine where Microsoft is headed. Absolute cost optimization after all the spending.

On the other hand, I agree that there was no hope of improvement. But then I get rid of the project management and put the creative team to work on new, productive ideas?
Layoffs in that context often mean a reduction in the planned (studio) outcome. Or does Rare have other things in the pipeline that are more promising, but we don't know about them?

From the perspective of being a hardware manufacturer, I agree and it shocks me that both Sony and MS didn't see the difficulty that would come for Xbox with the Activision purchase. The trial held over this seemed to indicate Sony was worried about it and MS was confident about the purchase helping Xbox, but that hasn't been the case. Having so many people to pay won't work with the poor sales of Xbox hardware and software and is now pushing Xbox into being a publisher over being a hardware brand. With all of the money and implied expertise you'd think Sony and MS' staff would have, how did neither party see this outcome coming?

Why couldn't Xbox just succeed with being the exclusive console for id games, and other Xbox owned companies/IP that they had before the Acti purchase?

IF i am not mistaken, they bought them for 350 Million back then.. and they did produce few good games on the box 360 so its not so bad compared to Sony buying Bungie for 2 billion plus lol

Sony did see it coming - read the very last line here.

They just wanted to make sure they got the best deal possible for themselves while ensuring it dragged out to the last day possible, and generally making it a horrible process for Microsoft.

I remember when they said "yea we announced it but we don't even know what the game is". What a mess. Shit doesn't fly when you spent $70B of shareholder money to acquire a studio and now everyone is looking at you

Man, ain't that some shit in the context of today. Look at how World of Warcraft has went downhill since they took over. The brain drain is real. If what happened to WoW happens to the rest of the acti-blizz portfolio then MS got proper fucked in this deal.

If their next hardware doesn't overperform our guesses, MS got finessed on a scale that we have never seen. A "Cheshire cat" lol. Also Bobby found a way to fuck over wow one more time before he sailed off on a golden jet.
