Everwild Cancelled

Don't get it. They had all of the ingredients for a successful game following SoT. Bad by Rare, bad by MS. Don't see where they go from here, hopefully not closed down.

lmao at ERA getting pissed off and saying fuck evil Microsoft. I'd have cancelled Everwild years ago. If anything, MS was too lenient.

Yup.

Sony AND Microsoft have been fucking blind for some hard decisions. Closing the Concord studio was surprisingly quick after the fact but to even let it become what it was all those years is still a fuckup.

Everwild seemed aimless and without a vertical slice of what its supposed to be. Should have been axed within the first 2 years if even that.

Seems like there's a ton of aimless devs with bad directors after massive talent leaves a studio, the remaining crew just leeching and living off a publisher's softness. Studios have been closed down with far less lenience. If Rare still exists after all this and only a project was cancelled they can consider themselves lucky.

Laura Fryer is right, it seems most devs at Microsoft have forgotten what it means to DELIVER. That's the entire purpose of a fucking studio! Rare was already a sinking ship at Nintendo even more so when the talent left. Obsidian is pretty much the only one delivering so far, massive success? Maybe not but they get to the finish line.

I heard they clapped Bonnie Ross kneepcaps, and force her to tell that she is leaving for family reasons. DO THE SAME TO PHIL. It's time.

Then hire Jim Ryan to handle the Xbox division.😊

I hate these big companies so much. They buy smaller companies, with talented and visionary people, for profit of course, and they keep ruining them, because the management doesn't understand gaming. They just keep doing it! Over and over.
So many amazing game series were destroyed by these bean counters.

If Microsoft bought Nintendo 15 years ago there would be no Mario, Zelda or Metroid anymore. It would all be gone.
Rare was an experiment that failed.

Theyll probably stop working on making games and stick to maintaining SoT operations while only working on few more of these:

It must kinda suck for the more passionate people in these companies. Imagine working in a creative field you love and after 10 years you have literally nothing to show.
They still got paid. At some point, if your company is dumb enough to pay you for 10 years for nothing, that's their fault. Not yours.

I didnt even remember it existed, and reading it been over a decade in development... not surprised at all. I doesnt look good either, it is only "It is made by Rare! Remember Rare?", but they havent been the same since the adquisiton. I would say their last gem was Live & Reloaded.

Well that was a monumental waste of several hundred people's entire decade of life. Imagine working on something for so so many years, possibly for your entire working life, then poof it's cancelled and you can't even show anyone.

I can't say I feel bad for Rare. They had so many years with nothing to show for it. They had this coming.

Did we ever find out what kind of game this actually was?

My concept for the game would be something similar to Okami, where you would have a world destroyed by pollution and you would act to clean up the planet. Certain regions would have some kind of spirit that would be the guardian of that environment.
It would be kind of an action RPG and the monsters would be animals possessed by the spirit of pollution.

Contraband gotta be the next one. I was thinking after the Xbox showcase that they clearly have several games in dev hell that were announced way too early

I often wonder what Rare could have accomplished if they hadn't been shoved into the role of Kinect Support Studio for years by Microsoft.

Say what you want about the game, I maintain Kameo could have turned into a quality family friendly fantasy game franchise for Xbox if they had let it. And Viva Piñata was well on its way to being a staple IP.

Then Microsoft was like "sike! Now you get to make Kinect Sports games and shitty new avatar UI updates!"

Microsoft buying rare is one of the biggest gaming disasters in history. Took one of the most iconic devs of all time and completely ruined them. They went from banjo kazooie, perfect dark, conkers bad fur day, etc to kinect shit and they never recovered.
I bet 95% of those who made Banjo, PD and Conker aren't even with Rare anymore.

Are they? I don't see Rare fanboys around anymore like the N64 days.
People still talk about Rare like they are some great studio but not as much as before. Rare has always sucked to me.

Yes I think Goldeneye was garbage. Fitting really being on a garbage console that has like 3 good games.

My partner knows someone who worked on this game for 5 years.

The game had no combat - or at least that was one of the hooks in a previous build.

I don't know if the individual in question has been laid off.

Anyway, what a monumental waste of time and money. The game has been in dev for 5+ years and must have been in a near finished state.

They must have known it was going to flop and so it was probably cheaper to just cancel it.

I really liked Sea of Thieves. Better than all the trash besides DKC and RC Pro-am. Conker was pretty based too.

Your opinion. But I think Donkey Kong games on SNES, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark N64, Conker's Bad Fur Day were all amazing games. Even Kameo on Xbox 360 was a good game.

the deeper MS got into rare ( after Kameo, the shitter the studio has become ). I wonder why... oh yeah. It's MS.

Remember that one Microsoft executive that thought they got the Donkey Kong franchise when they bought Rare? Good times.

This sucks to watch them dismantle this company. 😞

BOOOOOOOOO!!!!! just give rare to nintendo already and let them make games

Nostalgia makes people blind for the passing of time..... It's been 23 years since Rare was acquired by Microsoft. Almost no one who worked on those Nintendo games will still work there. It's a completely different company with a completely different work force.

I don't care about the people at all. Nintendos direction isn't make micro transaction games as services, they would give us single player games. Viva piñata on switch? Yes please

Yeah, I'm sure the company that's locked content and cosmetics behind plastic toys with artificial scarcity would never do anything shady like microtransactions!

I mean yeah they still got paid, so it could obviously be way worse.
I just think if you are working in a creative field like this it must suck looking back at the last 8-10 years of your career and not be able to point to a single finished game you have worked on.

Eh, based on the concept video they showed, it's no great loss. The real tragedy is that they wasted so much time on it.

5 months.

This is similar to closing Tango soon after talking positively about HiFi Rush.

Does he even have any control at all anymore? Who's actually pulling the strings? Sarah? Satya?

"It has been [a while]. And we've been able to give those teams time in what they're doing which is good and still have a portfolio like we have. It's like a dream that Matt (Booty) and I have had for a long time, so it's finally good to be there. We can give those teams time"

Didn't see that one coming, for real, thought it had some special artstyle that could set it apart and be pushed forward as an standout, kind of like Ori in a way, but nope...
