Sony's E3 2018: The trailer for God of War: Baby Daddy finishes playing and as the lights comes up Shu Yoshida appears and begins talking to the crowd about fostering the best talent in the world and trying to make the fan's dreams come true. He then introduces Hideki Kamiya onto the stage for him to introduce the fruits of Sony and Platinum Games collaboration, LEGEND OF THE DRAGOON.

600

An open world AAA action RPG focusing on character action, customization, deep RPG elements, and of course playing as a dragon. ;D

I'll hate you if this doesn't happen

During gamescom 2016 year they showed Scalebound in private showings.

They showed off something called "Dragon Link", something that they, as far as I know, haven't shown to the public ever and now possibly never will. Up until that point they only showed fairly basic combat that looked great but more in the vein of Dragon's Dogma and less like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. That's why many people used to Kamiya's games were pretty disappointed. And then they showed Dragon Link. It's a button you hold and then the camera switched into First Person Mode...and you controlled the dragon. So then you controlled the Dragon from Drew's perspective, which still looks HUGE because the camera doesn't zoom out but goes into first person and you fight against another huge Monster. And then they started comboing. They fluidly switched from Drew to the Dragon to Drew by holding or not holding the Dragon Link button.

Think the weapon system of DmC but instead of holding a button to switch to a certain weapon you hold a button to switch to a fucking dragon. So these two characters juggled that huge monkey enemy into the air with all the usual attacks and combos you know from Platinum Games only it was A HUGE GODDAMN DRAGON DOING THE COMBOS. There was a combo counter and a rating and everything. It was their direct answer to the "Where is the Platinum action?" question.

It looked fucking great and as far as I'm aware they have never released that footage, just as they never showed the HUGE array of customising options and RPG features.

I'm so mad about this cancellation. Goddamnit.

Damn that sounds awesome! You done fucked up Microsoft!

Oh lower. Sure. It's still pretty awful news considering half the studio was working on this game.

Oh absolutely. Mind you, the game was originally slated for the second half of 2016 before it got delayed so Platinum must have known that they were working on borrowed time and planned accordingly. I think they'll be fine.

I'm just sad because despite the negative response from a lot of people around here, I was optomistic about the title.

I should have mentioned that in a lot of those same articles, it's revealed that games get cancelled all the time. This one just happens to be quite high profile and had public showings. I was also sad when the original Prey 2 was cancelled as well. What they showed to the public looked fantastic.

so what are the creative differences? Seems vague. Did Ms really just try to redesign the game? That sounds like sabotage to themselves

And how are there technical differences? How can there be dofferences when it comes to working with the hardware?

Odds on the game becoming limited release Switch exclusive?

If this game had issues running on the Xbone you can forget about it running on the Switch. I wonder if Microsoft would even be willing of parting with that ip. It's a rather completely different situation with Bayonetta 2, since Sega is not only a third party publisher, they also have a close relationship with Nintendo.

I've criticized the hell out of the demo showings and rough early footage, but now I am legitimately fucking depressed. :/

Same here. It's more about Kamiya and his team at this point than whether I was interested in the game or not. I feel for the dude and hope there is a silver lining to all this.

Also who's left to even get platinum on the phone? IT seems like their games don't sell super well sot hat is probably scaring some companies away, activision shut down their licensing branch, both SEGA and Capcom seems VERY unlikely.

Are they just gonna do stuff for Square?

If Nier Automata bombs like their other games, they probably won't do more stuff with Square.

Maybe Konami let them do MGS6 lol

Right, Microsoft would be handing the IP over to a direct competitor as opposed to Sega who doesn't do hardware anymore. It's dead.

Why are they owning the IP if they dont want to do everything with it, they could easily give them away so other gamers can be happy that the IP is alive.

Are you serious? Why would any company that invested money in an IP just give it away? MS isn't a fucking charity. What the hell is wrong with people in this thread? MS isn't in this to make people happy or help Kamiya achieve his dream game - they're here to make money. Some people are clearly too triggered by this news to post coherent thoughts.

This will likely be the most replied to thread in regards to anything regarding Microsoft this year. There is nothing positive they could announce that will draw the same crowd.

It is called dog pilling and many are doing their best to dogpile as much as they can. Just odd that a game that garnered so little attention on Gaf and that the majority of the posters in the Going to fail thread predicted it would be bad and fail, yet when it is cancelled all of a sudden the game is the most talked about game in recent memory and people acting like they were interested in it and now it is evil MS, Phil Sucks, Xbox is doomed. Kind of sad, but to a certain extent par for the course.

Oh my god you're right! They shouldn't have bought LinkedIn and instead financed Scalebound!

You should know better than to lump a general Microsoft acquisition into matters involving the Xbox division ...

I've been around the block, and I've seen what game dev does to people. The mental gymnastics you have to engage in when dealing with mega-corps and contractual money issues, all while adapting to the 'politics' of the time. In 'that' era, Microsoft would hurl millions at you to make a piece of shit Kinect game just to show it had a library, few strings attached. Now they fuck with milestones at a deranged "should have a single player campaign/just add 4-player online simultaneous co-op" level.

I know you can't just equate mad corporation acquisitions and keeping an entertainment project going. It's a false equivalence BUT: You're Kamiya, one of few absolute videogame industry legends left, sleeping on an office floor, and you get the news that Microsoft is sacking the whole thing off, while at the same time finally closing that 26 billion deal for a website thing that already existed and would continued to have exist. There's a point at which the concept of money and modern civilisation just straight up breaks. Anyones mental health just shatters when you have to view 4 years of gruelling work as a total waste of time while someone shrugs their shoulders and pretends their hands are tied and 'don't have the money'.

With the automation boom continually threatening to completely upend the concept of workers and salaries, there's going to be a very hard to grapple with re-definition of money in the decades to come. It never hurts to realise the absolute absurdity of the scaling with situations like this.

For the last 3 years, absolutely.

With chibi characters, no blood, no open world, cartonish graphics because specs and no flying dragoons across the map, they just fly a few meters above the ground.

Then Miyamoto comes in and believes they should made it a Kirby game, because he dreamed last night about a Kirby ARPG.

Kirby: The Millenial Dragoon.

Ah, now is in 2D.
Sign me the fuck up

Actually, once again kudos to this thread for turning me on to Granblue Fantasy - I had no idea of its existence but it just shot to the top of my PS4 list with Persona 5, Ni No Kuni 2, and DQ 11...

Maybe even come out a little earlier since they will have more people to work on it for now. And yes, I expect Sony to capitalize on it with an announcement of some sort. It is how they work.

As for Japanese culture, I know a bit from spending time over there. But I'm no expert. It is damned certain that MS know absolutely nothing about working with Japanese successfully, though. That isn't even debatable at this point.

I kinda had a feeling this or Sea of Thieves was going to die soon. The projects have been moving really slow and MS don't seem to want to wait around and have been extremely heavy on the guillotine recently. I'm still a little nervous that what remains of Rare may not survive the development of Sea of Thieves as well.

I wonder if this will really effect MS and the little bit of relationship they have with Japanese devs. Aren't they really loyal when it comes to things like this?

Ffs didn't they ended Phantom Dust in some similar way? Now I'm worried about Crackdown 3.

I just can't trust microsoft with their bullshits presentations now. They should've finished it it anyway just to improve their costumers trust.

Spot on

Pretty much all early buzz around Sea of Thieves is super positive

Ah, now is in 2D.

You are confusing Aounoma with Miyamoto. He was the one with the dream. Miyamoto just gets inspired by activities.

Also Miyamoto is barely involved in Kirby.

Didn't know cartoon graphics were not possible on more powerful hardware.

Why do you need blood?

There was never a Chibi Kirby.

Why no open world?

Did you seriously just try to shit on Kirby you edgelord?
