Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

The game was originally due for release in 2016 though and got delayed by a whole year, so they're not getting any money back on the project unless Platinum came in under budget through the original timeline.

Obviously the some re-budgeting must have happened after the delay of last year because there's no way they were planning to not pay Platinum in 2017.

You do realise sunk cost is just money you've spent you can't get back?

There's no free/forgotten money about it. It was a failure.

That's why I say it's a bit more complicated than free money, but ElFly point was that the budget reserved for Scalebound in 2017 (development+marketing) can be used in something else now.

iam utterly in shock and so disappointed by ms and p*.

i dont know whos fault this is, but as a huge fan of ms, i dont have any words.

fuck their usual line-up.
halo, forza, crackdown, gow... man iam sick of those games after the 3rd entry.

fh3 was a surprise, but damn, i was so looking forward to buy scorpio, but now....

whats left of ms? if cuphead gets cancelled, welp, then ms is done for me :(

At least 1 WiiU was saved that day

Man, that sucks.

I'd just like to say that conceptually, I really like the idea of the protagonist putting on headphones and changing the music when shit gets real. That's really fun, kinda like in Revengeance how the music changes at pivotal moments. But the idea was poorly utilised in Scalebound with a weird-looking protagonist and poor music

Nope, the money doesn't just sit there in limbo with Phil scratching his head until he decides what he does with it. It gets taken away from you until you make another business case.

Like said, this isn't bedroom coding.

The fact that people want Xbox to be gone is just insane and has to be a result of console wars and brand loyalty. I can't think of any other reason why someone would view a major player in the console space leaving/failing as a good thing.

Didn't see anyone say/post this, examples?

Scalebound was apparently trending globally yesterday, and we're talking about social media here. The post's a product of its moment. It won't make much sense otherwise.

I wonder how will people try to figure out this blog post from Pi Foundation without looking up the date or noticing tags within a year or two.

Either that or you admit that this is only YOUR issue with the post and when people pointed out how much of a reach this is, you are trying to backpedal.

It's a big blow to the Xbox line up. Honestly there's a serious lack of single player story driven games. Well, exclusive ones at least. Everything is literally MP focused. Forza 7, State of Decay, Sea of Thieves, Crackdown...(and I've heard Crackdown isn't going too hot either, though nothing as bad as this).

Unless they have a bunch of first party studios secretly tucked away somewhere (which they don't that I know of), I genuinely struggle to think of what surprises they could have at E3 *as of right now*. Halo 6 is to be expected, and I don't see publishers playing ball much anymore with 3rd party exclusives unless Microsoft gives the Xbox division a huge budget to throw cash around, which I highly doubt. Their major first party IP are on a decline with Halo doing less than before and Gears 4 not selling that well at all relatively speaking (not good enough to sustain a huge studio with that many workers and budget).

What's happening now is the exact opposite of what Xbox fans seemed to want out of a Phil spencer leadership.

I remember when he became head of Xbox and everyone was saying how there'll be tons of new games, but they're still coasting on announcements from 2013-2014 and in that time, games have been cancelled, multiple studios closed including Lionhead...

As a big Xbox fan since day one, I'm not very hopeful for the future. Scorpio won't do anything without software to push it heavily.

This is the most worrying part. If you haven't heard much of other games being developed, and MS has a habit of not announcing games until they're less than 1 year out... I'm not sure there will be much in terms of first party content to push Scorpio. It will likely be 3rd party software running at 4K.

Same reason people want everything on Steam: they want all games on the platform they prefer.

Who do you think will buy it? We're talking billions upon billions here.. I can't see anyone spending that much money on it to be honest.

Maybe during the late 360 days I would say yes probably worth billions. As it is right now there marketshare, and worth is much, much lower than what it use to be. It has to be with all the money that's been lost and sunk in entertainment and tv on xbox.

Minecraft is the only thing really making them any kind of money. And that more or less has to do more with Microsoft buying it and making straight profits from it. From what they have earned from it, have they taken that money and re-invested in new projects and IP's?

So far I would say no, i believe the profits from that are going straight to Microsoft as a whole to make up the sinking ship that is xbox division right now.

All those hyped E3s where nothing happened

That one E3 with all those games

Crackdown constantly delayed
Fable Legends canceled
Phantom Dust cancelled
Scalebound cancelled

If none of the above were shown it would have been a awful E3.

you're forgetting the BC announcement, which made that E3.

Scalebound could have been Microsoft's Final Fantasy vs Xlll (XV) or Last Guardian. Years of development costs that will never be recouped

Haven't played FF but with TLG we got a lovely game, which to me as a gamer matters more than recouping costs. And it gained Sony a lot of goodwill, which is also worth something.

I do wonder what they want to do with Minecraft

Besides make lots of money, how badly would they botch some kind of sequel?

Minecraft doesn't need a sequel. It's a platform on it's own that could be endlessly expanded.

But Microsoft seems content just raking in the profits and letting it simmer. Can't blame them. A sequel certainly is unlikely to make lightning strike twice.

I don't know. Video games are more of an entertainment product than they are a tech product and it never seemed like a good fit for MS in the first place. It's the reason why MS wants all of their games to be "services" because they have experience making services like that and don't understand that games don't or shouldn't be like that. If I had to guess, Amazon would be a better fit for Xbox, they've been investing in entertainment a lot recently but I don''t know if Amazon can afford Xbox though.

Wondering if they thought they could put this project down without much of a backlash. It's fair to say it's showings didn't seem to generate much interest. If it's true that there was better stuff that just hadn't been shown yet then that pisses me off even more.
