Solange or Beyonce?

I had a discussion with my GF about the sisters and she was recounting how offended her coworkers got when she mentioned she didnt like Beyonce. I dont listen to Beyonce willingly, but I am very familiar with her music and enjoy a couple songs. I know that Beyonce is considered to be the Queen of pop or something but Beyonce just missing something that Solange has.
We looked up the who wrote the songs in Beyonce and Solange albums- Beyonce has 6-15 writers for most of her songs. While Solange writes most of her songs herself.
It's manufactured vs. personal.

But yeah, I'm curious what the rest of you think.

They're two different kinds of awesome. I personally prefer A Seat At the Table to Lemonade, but both are great.

Beyonce. The finished product matters more to me than what went into it.

A seat at the table is a good album but it's hindered by Solange's weak voice.

I don't put too much effort into disliking music because of ghost writers. I take the end product for what it is. Because I've worked in the music business, and writers are talented people, deserving of success that comes from the music they help make.

Having songwriters doesn't mean it's manufactured. LOL

Also,
[Beyonce] has received co-writing credits for most of the songs recorded with Destiny's Child and her solo efforts. Her early songs were personally driven and female-empowerment themed compositions like "Independent Women" and "Survivor", but after the start of her relationship with Jay Z, she transitioned to more man-tending anthems such as "Cater 2 U". Beyoncé has also received co-producing credits for most of the records in which she has been involved, especially during her solo efforts. However, she does not formulate beats herself, but typically comes up with melodies and ideas during production, sharing them with producers.

I don't think you're giving her enough credit for how involved she's in the creation process of her music.

lol @ trivializing the accomplishment of these two women into "manufactured v personal" when their music is offering much more than can be inferred by just looking at the recording process.

Maybe try to assess instead which one you prefer by how Beyoncé tackled racial issues through the lens of marriage while Solange did so through a more psychological and introspective stance.

I like Solange better because I mean her whole aesthetic and sound appeals to me as a person more than beyonce would even though beyonce has the larger body of work and stronger voice. i suspect a lot of gaffers will feel the same that has any interests in either of them. OP even preemptively mentioned the "beyonce has 6 writers on a song" stuff.

Beyonce is the better artist. She's the most well rounded "mainstream" musician/entertainer out right now. She's outlasted so many of her peers that it's ridiculous and for good reason. If you look at the trajectory of her career and the hardships she faced early on her career it's amazing to see where she's at now. When the original incarnation of destiny's child broke up she was one of the most hated people in America. She was able to turn that around and propel the group into one of the most successful girl groups of all time and spin it off into the solo career we see now.

Solange isn't a bad artist by any means but being artsy isn't enough to make you a better artist. I'm glad she's gotten more mainstream attention besides going off on Jay Z and the proud family theme song.

Working with a team doesn't mean something is manufactured. I'm not the biggest Beyonce fan by any means, but I can't imagine anyone listening to Lemonade and thinking that it's soulless or manufactured. Collaboration is part of the creative process.

Haven't heard of the former. As for the latter, I recognize Beyoncé's talent, but I also don't particularly care for her work (or, really, Destiny's Child, haven't paid much attention since she's been solo).

This year? Solange. A Seat at the Table was better than the already great Lemonade.

Over the course of their careers? Beyonce. Though I'm not a huge Beyonce guy to be honest and I like the sound of A Seat at the Table way better than most of Beyonce's stuff.

thanks to Tina we have both so we don't have to choose

but I'm happy to reopen dusty arguments, especially with the nasty few who think D3>D4

Given that i have never heard of Solange, i think its safe to say Beyonce has greater awareness and reach to the masses, that's gotta count for something.

Beyoncé has the stronger voice, but I still prefer Solange's album to anything big sis has ever done. Just not really a fan of Beyoncé's music unless you want to count Destiny's Child and a few solo cuts.

Haven't seen Solange perform, but it sounds like Beyoncé is easily the better of the two. Beyoncé is fantastic there.

So I'd rather watch Beyoncé, rather listen to Solange.

Beyonce's run is pretty much unprecedented, especially how the older she's getting the more relevant and artistic her music has become within pop culture. That's typically unheard of.

I definitely agree beyonce is a better performer and her music is profound in some sense, but I believe that impact is lost when you have all hands in the pot. No doubt does she have a huge influence on the songs written, but Solange comes off more raw. Raw with rough edges, but in a good way.
I dont want to come off discrediting her unquestionable talent, but solange appeals to my musical sense a bit more.

Being honest i think Solange would have way less attention if she weren't Bey's sister, glad as I am to have heard of both

Laughing at the people saying Beyonce can't sing. She has one of the most unique yet versatile voices in the industry. Also her vocal control is out of this world.

I like both of their music, but I'll take Beyonce overall. Beyonce is generally more upbeat and in your face which is way more my style

Agreed. As simple as it seems people just don't understand what singing actually is. Not liking someone's voice or music does not mean they can't sing. Also not everyone has the same versatility, but most people in the world can sing well with the right training. Beyonce and Solange are both great singers

Yep. Some people consider her overrated but I think it's the opposite. We've become so use to lazy uninspired "artist" who sing over an electronic beat that we can't truly appreciate people who actually put time and effort into their craft.
