North American Nintendo Switch Lineup

I got my pre-order in but am definitely having thoughts about cancelling. I already own a Wii U so what am I really paying for here if I can already get the best game(Zelda)? It looks like there will be the typical Nintendo game drought for the rest of the year as well.

How did this happen lol
How did it happen? I and many others have been saying for years that this is typical of the company. Horrible last half for the Wii, nothing to show for that drought on Wii U's first year. Here we are at Switch. Rinse and repeat.

Thinking the same. They've had a drought on Wii U to prepare for this launch and they couldn't even have remasters of Wii U games ready in time.

So disappointing. That being said, I've still got my preorder for now.

How can this same mistake keep happening? I have this weird feeling that the development status of Zelda really put Nintendo in an awkward position, where they weren't going to be able to sell it as strictly a Wii U game, but the Switch software and firmware and OS wasn't really ready for the console to launch just yet. Instead of delay Zelda yet again, they're just releasing the Switch with no other software and a half-baked release lineup for the rest of the year. This should not be happening. Not if there were any learnings to take away from the Wii U and 3DS launches, yet here we are seeing history repeat itself. What is wrong with Nintendo internally that we could have gotten to this point?

I've been thinking about their anemic launch line up and to be honest... I think it's on purpose.

I think they realize that a VAST majority of people getting the Switch want Zelda. So, prepare that and a party/mini game collection. Most consumers (aside from us on Gaf and other enthusiasts) don't usually buy 3+ games at the launch of a system due to the cost.

So let EVERYONE buy Zelda and maybe the cheap mini game collection being sold for $50 (?!!!) then ramp up marketing for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Then ARMS, then Splatoon 2, etc.

That way there's always something on the horizon. i think most of us would prefer a bunch of these games all came out at launch, but let's be honest - some games might get lost in the shuffle and overshadowed by Zelda that way.

It might actually work for them.

OHHHHH 1, 2, Switch isn't just the dueling? I was like how in fuck can they charge 50 dollars for that.

Just so we are all clear...

PS4 launched with Resogun, Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack

At least Switch is launching with Zelda.

PS4 launched with 25 games day one, (180 year one) regardless of whether you think they were good or not it, that's a hefty offering compared to Switcch.Right now the only game I'd buy (and many others share this sentiment) day one is Zelda BotW, but guess what, i'm a WiiU owner and i'll be getting it there.

I'd say they're on par, since you can get Zelda on another system.

I'd say it's pretty similar to the PS4s, in that it holds a lot of promise, but on launch day is a bit short.

Nintendo knows that 3 people bought Wii Us tho, maybe thats why they think Zelda is enough. Either way they should have launched in the Summer or Holiday 2017, they have nothing right now.

But there was never any question about third party support for PS4. We knew all the heavy hitters would be support PS4.

Nintendo has a lot to prove in showing that third-party support will return after the Wii U and last night was not a good start.

The idea that PS4 launched with 3 games is ridiculous.

Also, Resogun was free with PS+. And there were free to play games at launch. And PS+ also offered Contract.

And Battlefield and COD and Assassins Creed. You know, three of the biggest franchises in the world.

So yeah, not the same.

PS4 also launched with Battlefield, COD, FIFA and Ass Creed.

Franchises that are much bigger sales wise than Zelda.

Not to mention that PS4 / X1 also brought with them a new generation of tech so people snapped them up for that alone.

Switch is mid gen and underpowered, it's not going to sell on technology alone. It needs killer apps infinitely more than PS4 did.

Genuinely curious here: does the Switch have the weakest/smallest launch lineup in North American console history? 5 games at launch:

Zelda - the only must have
1 2 Switch - minigames that arguably should have been free
Super Bomberman R - cool
Skylanders - another skylanders game
Just Dance - another just dance game

Other than Zelda, the other games seem like filler that would round out a 10-15 title launch lineup. And for reference, I have the Switch pre-ordered and am getting Zelda, so I'm not on the hate train, I'm just kinda shocked that they think this is enough.

They could have delayed the launch if the games weren't ready. How did they not even get Mario Kart ready for launch? It's just an updated port.

So yeah, to reiterate my main question: has there been a weaker North American launch in terms of games lineup than the Switch? (specifically the launch day games)

AND the annual sports games that people buy in droves

Most likely, it is deliberate. Without fixing the third-party problem (which they haven't and aren't going to do) there needs to be a constant, steady stream of first-party games coming out on Switch. I really don't think anything that's happened in the past 24 hours indicates that they can't or won't accomplish that. So many people are acting like Nintendo unveiled the entire lineup last night, and that's it, the Switch is going to live or die on that. Yesterday was basically "Day 0" of the Switch-era, for all intents and purposes...it's way to early to start writing it off.

Considering the situation with the Wii U that they are just coming off of, should they have shown off another first-party game or two that's in development? Yeah, probably.

That's what I was thinking as well. Nintendo Hardware will sell at launch regardless and especially with a highly anticipated Zelda release. They have a few games to hold them until Splatoon 2 in the summer. A few more games to hold them over until Xenoblade, and finally Mario at the end of the year.

Will obviously be ups and downs but its much improved from Wii U in my opinion.

Yeah, but this would also indicate that they might not have many other games slated for the first half of this year. This looks like the first year of the Wii U when one of the biggest selling points of this system should be that it has both handheld and console Nintendo teams on it, leading to a larger library. If they had a lot more games coming this year, they wouldn't need to spread out their releases as much.

Another thing, what is with all of these ridiculously high priced games that should be $20 digital titles?

Super Bomberman R is $60
Minecraft is $60
1, 2, Switch is $50
Ultra Street Fighter 2 is $40
Puyo Puyo Tetris is $40

Honestly I'd rather have it personally as someone who likes getting physical copies of games and doesn't mind paying high prices, but yeah this isn't going to go over well with the market in 2017 at all....

Wait WTF!? Bomberman is $60 and USF2 is $40? I thought they'd be $25 tops!

This is the philosophy used for Wii U. How'd that turn out?

The switch is a dual purpose console/portable with unified game design and a drought on their previous systems, but they still didn't have games to show for launch.

This looks far better than the Wii U first year. Zelda BOTW, Splatoon 2, Arms, Mario, and Xenoblade 2 already make it much better in comparison.

I'm also expecting some smaller titles will still be announced for the second half of the year at e3.

1,2 Switch definitely was always gonna be physical. Nintendo wasnts it to be easy for the casual crowd who would of likely struggled with getting an online only title.

It's not terrible (go look at PS4/Xbone launches and tell me its better), but they really should've bumped Mario Kart to launch.
Are you kidding me? The PS4/XB1 launch line up shits all over this. 25+ games, biggest franchises in the world, multiple exclusives.

People have hazy memories, because the BIGGEST knock against the PS4/XB1 launch line-up was the fact that there were lots of cross-gen game. You can't honestly can't hold anything against those lineups in favor of the Switch when the biggest game of the Switch's 5-ish game lineup is a cross-gen title.

High prices across the board is gonna kill the Switch.

Slightly OT but Has anyone gif'd the bit from the parental controls video with bowser jr asking for new games and Bowser saying now. Someone needs to shop the gaf logo (or equivalent) on to Bowser Jr and Kimishima on to Bowser.
