Do you prefer the English or Japanese dub of the new Zelda BOTW trailer?

Unless something terrible happens. Like somebody dies. A family member maybe. A father, perhaps.
It depends on the person.

It really is. Sorry bub

this isn't what a person screaming would be doing, her mouth isn't even animated to convey a scream. In terms of beat, the English VA is nailing the timing, she just sounds a bit dull, like someone attempting to dub a crying scene but not actually being very invested in the character. And she has that vague British but not really thing going on like Luna and Ignis,

The English basically doesn't even fit the animation. You might prefer emotional expressions to be subtle but this is clearly an outburst so shit is just plain wrong?

Japanese flowed better with that trailer at least, imo.

English was good, but what I absolutely can't stand is a middle aged english voice actor trying to do an old man's voice. That's what the first male voice sounds like anyway. It's quite common in anime aswell.

I disagree completely. I didn't feel the Japanese version matched what we were watching. She is gasping for air not screaming like most people do when they cry. Then she somehow gets even louder when she drops her head into Link's arm. It should be muffled like the English version.

Anyway clearly seems hit or miss with a lot here.

Can we all agree the Japanese narrator was by far the best? :)

Neither old people sounded very good in English, hell they didn't even sound middle aged they sounded like young adults doing their damndest to sound old. And I can't not hear this.

Listening to a language I don't understand takes me out of the game, so english obviously. I want to be immersed in this world, feel the impact of their words as I read them and the english VA seems to be doing that so far.

I wish they would have gone full blown Hylian route instead. You don't have to deal with regional voice acting then. It also makes sense for the world.

I hope I can choose the Japanese one. If it is not available I guess I'll go with the (castillian) Spanish, which seemed pretty good from the trailer.

Except it's animated for that in the very gif you linked. Her mouth is a bit open at the start when she sobs and then opens wider while she collapses into Link's arms and cries.

Japanese. The US dub is pretty bad. Not Pokken Tournament bad but pretty awful nonetheless. If we don't get to choose I might have get it for my Japanese Wii U.

Old Woman: JPN
King: Tie
Zelda: ENG

A mixed bag for me. I'm going to play it in English anyway, so hopefully that old woman only has a few lines.

At the moment the Japanese one. The scream of Zelda in particular is a lot more impactful.
Yes! If this is indicative of how the versions differ in emotional display, I'll import the japanese version. You really feel Zeldas despair in the japanese dub, while the english has just a sob. Completely different scenes as a result.

No it's not because:

starts with mouth more closed, opens it at the end to cry and then falls on his arms which would muffle it...
Her body would also tense up quite a bit if she were screaming.

There is way more emotion in the Japanese dub. This is what I feared when Zelda would get voice acting, bad dubs.

I really hope I can play it with the Japanese dub.

English Zelda sounds like she breaks down inside and collapses. Much better than the Japanese toddler scream.

Neither performance is winning any awards, but the English was a hell of a lot more subtle and natural sounding to me. Japanese VA fell into the trap of being overly dramatic which takes me out of it.

That would dramatically increase the file size. Why woukd Nintendo do that. they didn't for stuff like xeno

Well unless they decide to ship individual versions in Europe with all different languages on, which I really doubt they would. Hopefully it's like Pokémon, each copy has all the languages it was localised in.

the narrator in the English trailer is terrible there's no energy. The Japanese version gave me goosebumps, it felt primordial and tribal. English narrator sounds like she's 18 pretending to be old and wise.

As for the cry, I think the Latin American version sounds the best and is a good middle ground between the ENG and JPN versions. I need more context of the scene to say which I believe is more appropriate however.

That melodramatic voice acting by Zelda in the Japanese dub is awful. It's basically the by-the-numbers female Japanese voice acting you see in thousands of Saturday night anime.

Zelda was bawling on screen. Are you and others completely blind, or is your hatred for "anime" voice acting blinding you to the actual reality of what happened in that scene?

I don't even watch anime so no I don't hate anything. To me the japanese one is overly dramatic. I even watched a casting show yesterday and an actress got a negative note because of her overlaughing scene. but I know nothing about acting myself.

I also watched this and the only one that sound unnatural was the japanese one with the russian one being over a little. not saying it's bad but maybe that is their style in voice performance.

In a weird way, the Japanese voicework sounds like Hylian to me. At least, Zelda sounds like Fi from Skyward Sword.

So I personally prefer the Japanese version.

The japanese VA was standard anime bullshit that I've heard many times over.

Zelda's english VA sounded a lot more natural, and I enjoyed it immediately.
Thought the old woman and man were better in Japanese. Zelda much better in English.

I will say that the males were better in japanese though. The old voice had a more solemn quality.

The English is just flat out terrible as Zelda voice actress is bland and devoid of any emotion.

The German one is better and will be the one that I will be switching to should I am unable to disable voice acting at all.

Just watched the german and french ones (understand both languages).

The german old woman is again someone imitating an old raspy voice and it's awful. Not overly fond of Zelda either. Male voices were okay. I'm not too fond of german dubs in general.

French sounds great. I'm biased towards women speaking french. It's lovely. Good cry aswell. The old voice sounded like it came from an old person too.

Pokémon is just text.
And if they've dubbed PAL5 they will at least have that all on one disc dubbed. What would be the harm of a 6th dub? Seems like it would be cost efficient to just have the same version ship (with the normal/usual regional compliance differences).

Much prefer the British voice of Zelda. The Japanese screaming sounded way too hysterical and melodramatic. The British voice of Zelda executed that part with subtlety and I could actually hear the emotion in her voice, whereas the Japanese voice is literally just an over the top scream and sounds really silly.

I have to go with this.

Also, I understand English

The first Xenoblade had dual audio, the second one didn't because the game filled up the disc and there wasn't room. This game does not, according to the file size on the Japanese page, it's only 13GB. Nintendo has also done dual audio for multiple other games on Wii U and 3DS.
