Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Also, in case anybody forgets, all of this mess will be behind the paywall. It's like paying for box of present full of shit.

Thats why it will be a singleplayer console for me if the sub is anything higher then 25 bucks. If they think they can ask 50 like xbox or ps then lol i wish them goodluck with a dozen subs.

O.................................k.....................

I'm telling you, its to force their stupid fucking phone games on you.

100000% FUCKING PERCENT.

"Hey, enjoyed that match of Splatoon 2? Why don't you try miitomo while you're here!!11"

That shit isn't barely lasting 3 hours on Zelda in optimal conditions.

Surely even you can understand how having a mandatory bluetooth drain for online is about the worst idea they could come up with.

it maybe isnt the best solution, but a practical one for outdoors. Should ther be built in features? yeah absolutely, but we dont know the full detals.

The more I think about this, the more I feel like this has to be due to the portability factor and having all online functionality would absolutely destroy the battery.

But why does this have to be the case even when you're home? I really hope we're missing something and this is just an option at the very least for when you're at home, that this is a different way to do online for those who choose and that all the functionality can still be found on the console if you wish. I have nothing against this purely as an option, but forcing this on players is absolutely bonkers ridiculous.

Its so terrible thats hard to explain in words or even in thoughts.

Its so bad that they are afraid to show.

If they dont show their online before release, Im conviced this wont have online in a reasonable way. It will have a terrivle effect on sales.

This is trading to become even worse than Wii U.

Nintendo should stop thinking gamers are retards from 90s that dont understand technogy. They think they can PR spin anyone.

I guess Nintendos plan is to make sure noone plays online so they can save money on server management?.. Every day that goes I get more shocked how this company manages to stay somewhat relevant..

No, Android Wear / Android interaction is different entirely, that's kinda entirely the point of Android Wear, to control & interact with your paired Android phone with it. (And it doesn't "launch Google Music" as such - It sends a message called an "Intent" that says "play this music please" and your choice of app is loaded, which by default, will be Google Play Music for most), that kind of functionailty is denied to other, non Android Wear devices.
Hmmm I wonder if Nintendo can get permission fromn google to use this feature because this is the only way this would work.

i thought picking up Nvidia meant they were trying to modernize themselves up a bit but even as a nintendo pessimist they find a way to prove you wrong and disappoint you. what a god damn joke, what the fuck really.

Reggie can't do a spin to save his life, jesus. Wording this shit like the only way you could use voice before was with "bulky gamer headphones". How the fuck is having to hold your goddamn phone in a reliable position while you use your two hands to play the Switch a "elegant solution"? This company is completely and utterly lost.

How do you spin this in a positive way? It's a mind blowing decision, and I'd hate to be him. We all know this was Nintendo of Japan's decision.

This sounds more complicated than it needs to be. :\

What the heck is going on? I don't even really understand, it's that odd.

I don't want to use a phone for shit Nintendo, stop it.

Ugh this sucks I don"t want to drain my phone battery for this crap and pay for it too. So dumb.

Imagine being a kid who is given a Switch but is not given a smart phone and a lot of things just aren't able to be used, like I know that's increasingly more common to give kids phones but I didn't get a phone until I was 15.

Can a journo at one of these events pls just grab Reggie and say "EXPLAIN THIS, NONE OF IT IS CLEAR"

Instead of asking "so what do u think makes this different from the Wii u? ;)"

It's like they want the good momentum Switch was building up to be for nothing and destroy it day by day until launch.

Elegant solution:

The Switch
Plus the Joy Con attachments
Plus a dock
Plus a TV
Or a charger
Plus your phone
And its charger
And a headset
Via a paid online service

Elegant solution.

Me carrying my Switch and Phone + attachments:

Nintendo really needs to give all the details on their online stuff in the next day or two or this shit is gonna follow the Switch for the rest of its lifetime like how people still think the Xbox One can't play used games or that the Wii U is a Wii accessory.

Hmm, so thinking about how smart watches work, maybe the app is just handling all this, but you're only actually interacting with the Switch itself? So the Switch acts like the watch and sends commands to the device app...

I think people need to calm down and wait until we SEE this app.

Then we can proceed to shit on it if it's as bad as it sounds.

It's not on the console, it's on a separate device that you may or may not have.

What else could you possibly need to know to confirm that it's a shit idea?

The console launches in less than 2 months. People have a right to be upset about all of this vague shit. ALL of this should have been clarified and explained during the presentation or the day after.

Yet we still have more questions than answers.

Can somebody explain the "bulky headset" thing to me... So instead of carrying the headset, you hold your phone to your ear to voice chat? Burning up your battery? Or is he saying you put it on speaker? This makes no fucking sense. Couldn't they just build a mic into the handheld?

Nintendo can't save themselves but they've sure managed to give the USB battery pack industry a handy leg up lately.

They really needed to go into more detail about their app and what it does. THe info we have is terrible.
Replace "their app" with basically any aspect of the device and that's where we've been at since the presentation :\

I think people need to calm down and wait until we SEE this app.

Nintendo have systematically destroyed people's ability to give them the benefit of the doubt over the last 15 years. The reaction is fair.

Probably a major reason why Activision and EA have yet to commit any kind of important multiplayer titles to the Switch because of dumb backwards shit like this that makes it a nightmare for devs to figure out how to make it work in their games.

....matchmaking? So like I can't search for an online game without my phone? That can't be right.

You'll clearly be able to join random Internet matches through the software and system itself, probably even see what your registered friends are playing and hop in. This app seems to be specifically tailored to creating private lobbies with friends and chatting in and out of game

Or shit on the thing we know is there, which is a paywall for online gaming which is and has always has been buuuuuuuuuuullshhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

No you have to carry your bulky headset and a small headset, plug the small headset into the phone for voice chat then the bulky headset into the switch and put your small earphones in then cover them with your bulky headphones to make sure you get chat + game sounds

How would you propose spinning this? We all give Reggie shit, but forget he's not the one making these decisions. We're shooting the messenger

I like it. Just cause it's so different. It'll be fun to try out.

I barely online game tho so I have no real investment here. Sry it's ruining y'all's lives.

How would having all the online functionality destroy the battery? The thing still has to send data constantly through your phone for a multiplayer game to work so some extra packets for voice here and there isn't going to do much.
