Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

I'm just gonna say this because I actually agree with your stance that this is kinda dumb, but man you need to calm down. Not everyone who disagree with you is somehow laying out some kind of defense force or accusing you of some kind of character assassination of a corporation (is that possible?) They're simply just commenting that you and guys like you seem to be a bit too emotionally invested in being angry about this.

Tranquilo man. Just relax.
You're right. I do need to chill. "Nintendo defence force" has me tilted.

Just saying that sounds dumb.

im not going to complain about this feature just yet until i have tried it out myself HOWEVER it sounds horrible and goes against what other do and have done these last 10 years.

Why do Nintendo feel they need to ALWAYS offer something new? it´s like they are going out of their way to do it differently even if it means to offer something that sounds like it could be a bad mess like this feature.

oh well i hope they can pull it off and make it even easier for users but doubt it.

This and the price point feel very off, im guessing the price is my biggest issue so far. your paying for a PS3 with money that could get you a PS4 here in Europe.

Switch should have been in the 250 price point.

I think by "matchmaking" Reggie may be referring to managing a party with friends to then join games with. Random matchmaking must be possible from game, surely?.

Isn't it summer the app is available?, because Mario Kart and Fast RMX are due before that and I'm assuming those games will have online play.

exactly.

because he did not say anything like "only way machtmaking works is with the app for your smartphone". We just don't know enough right now. He just highlighted what the app can do. If this is optional and you can do all that also on the switch, which should(!) be a given, it will be awesome. but we can't celebrate that just yet, because we don't know.

if it's really the only way, I wonder if they cut the matchmaking features from mario kart 8, and yes then I'll be angry too.
I'll still keep my pre-order because Splatoon/Zelda/Fire Emblem and Mario
.

It's just...we don't know the whole picture yet.

It seems to me it would've been just as easy to simply say something like, "*In addition to the Switch's built-in lobby/chat/friends system* we have this handy-dandy app as an optional method of handling online social...yada, yada, yada". That would've required, what, an extra 10 seconds?

The fact that something so simple to mention (and self-explanatory) was glossed over/ignored is exactly why people are assuming the worst.

It's 2017.

Someone teach Nintendo how the Internet works

The beta app is free until a few months after release, alongside the online (I think).

We're all out to smear Nintendo because we have nothing better to do.

Sony and Microsoft fans, working together in unison in online forums to take down little ol' Nintendo.

COLLUSION!!!!!

They've been doing it for years now. Their behavior includes pretending that titles like Knack, The Order, Destiny, The Division, The Crew, and Ryse are good games.

Whyyyyy? It's genuinely unfathomable why they are doing this. What's the benefit to anyone? Why have a headphone jack on the system if you won't be able to chat with anyone without having a seperate device there? And it's not a free service anymore either. I just really don't know what Nintendo are thinking. Can't blame Reggie though, he's just the PR guy, he doing his job. So is the implication that there will be zero way to join your friends for a game without the app? Will you be able to play with randoms without the app? Ugh.

You're making it hard for me to like you, Nintendo.

Nintendo could have just made a powerful console to match PS4, skipped the HD rumble and portability, kept discs, copied virtually everything the others have. I know a lot of people really wished they'd done this.

I'm really glad they didn't do that, personally. I have my PS4 and Xbox One for big AAA games, online multiplayer titles like Battlefield 1 and so on. To me the Switch is refreshingly different, and offers what hasn't been done before for those that want something else.

I think people just want to be able to turn on their Switch and quickly jump into a match with a friend and chat with them. All without the hassle of using a smart phone app.

And I think that's fair.

We aren't talking about the larger philosophy of Nintendo here...

LMAO. I mean....you aren't entirely wrong. Can't help but laugh. You are a brave one Briguy and I gotta commend you for it. Really paddling against the stream in this thread and not running from it. Hope to add you as a Switch friend come Spring.

I'm not the target market for, you know, normal matchmaking. But this seems kind of cool. I hate game blocking load times while waiting on a server call for a friends list or some OS network feature.

I don't understand how a company has become so divorced from its user base.
Why? It's been a thing since Nintendo decided to stick with cartridges with the N64 even if that meant users had to pay up to $30 more per game than what a new PS1 game on a CD would cost. And the gap has only grown wider since then.

Remember Iwata saying during the GameCube days how he didn't believe gamers were all that interested in playing online? I do. This was around the launch of Xbox Live and Halo 2, mind you.

What does mouse and keyboard have to with any of this?

Things like searching for new friend's usernames and general navigation between menues? Sony and MS have really gone above and beyond making stuff like that feel intuitive on consoles but (You can say this is subjective) I still think it feels more natural on a PC set up.

Maybe if Nintendo, I dunno, clarified this shit instead of supposedly being coy, people wouldn't have to "foam at the mouth", especially people here who have preordered the system. Not everyone is shitposting - there are genuine concerns for a product they bought or plan to buy.

It's clear that information isn't ready to be shown, or I'm sure they would've showed it. The Switch seems, in some respects, rushed out the door, and it seems one thing that suffered is the readiness of online services at launch. It just so happens online services aren't very important for the vast majority of Nintendo games, but I'm sure they're ironing out the last bit of details they need to get straight before showing it off pre-launch. I just think people could hold off on jumping to massive conclusions until then. I also don't understand why a journalist thus far hasn't just asked "Will voice audio come through the console or will you need two headsets?", and they might've just been pre-briefed not to ask because they're not yet ready to share.

Man it would be amazing if Nintendo held a conference explaining all the features the OS on their new console would have..oh wait.

When the ps4 and xb1 were announced, the OS was demonstrated on both showing what it can and can't do and that was almost 6 Months before release. NINTENDO has a little over a month and we are still in thr dark about their online services and OS.

True, Nintendo could be more transparent on this, but I'm fairly confident they will be as we near launch. Not preordering isn't going to kill anyone, and I'm sure if you like what you see you'll have plenty a chance to snag one in its first month. The console ain't going anywhere just because you didn't buy it day 1.

I brought up Teamspeak to highlight that it works well with equipment that PC gamers already invest in. It sounds like Nintendo is trying to eliminate the need for a gaming headset with the Switch, and keyboard and mouse don't seem to be part of the equation whatsoever.

Let's wait and see what the full info is rather than calling something "objectively bad" based on incomplete tidbits of info.

Again, you're speaking through and playing the same device in your scenario. As in an all-in-one solution, which is exactly what everyone wants. You say you use it to highlight that it works well with the equipment PC gamers are already invested in, but then Switch owners already invested in a Switch. Why not let them do everything... on their Switch?

And no, Nintendo's not "eliminating the gaming headset". They're moving the headset to your phone and requiring you to use that as well, instead of just using the damn device your were already using. They're literally just increasing the amount of hardware you have to use, while also introducing novel new issues like "how does one play their game with headphones and chat with a headset".

Did anyone want to eliminate the gaming headset anyway?

This is actually an interesting solution to gate keeping young players from voice/info-sharing in online games. If I need to log in once and then it does a decent job of updating status then it could work ok...maybe.

Haha...good grief.

You're serious, aren't you?

Parental controls would do a better job.

You can't use the bluetooth set you already have for your phone? You have to buy a dedicated gaming headset and use that to make this work?

yeah paying for online is a no-go for me. What a joke. Offline-only hopefully wont be too bad.

also browsing through the thread and learned the Pro controller doesn't have a headphone jack/mic in >_> y

This is probably the most donkey brained decision made for the Switch.

I can understand Nintendo have their quirks, but this takes it to another level.

I mean they do have a headphone jack on the Switch. Would it have been that hard to implement it? Even as a software update down the line?

Having to have a 3rd party device to access the "social" parts of the console is just mind boggling. Absolutely mind boggling.

But according to some here, everyone and their dogs have smartphones.

Sounds good, bro. Yeah, I'm a bit on the crazy side (obviously lol).

How about you tell that to the people attacking those who are saying "let's see the full details" and they're being called Nintendo defense force fanboys. Even those who want to try to figure where Nintendo is going with this is being told they're "damage controlling".

Everyone's getting tight and I honestly don't know why. This seems to happen a lot in Nintendo threads for almost no reason whatsoever. I've been called a shill and corporate apologist in the past for not flying off the handle at every dumb decision Nintendo has made in the past and honestly it makes no sense.

Being emotionally invested in the potential success or failure of a console is a bit too much for even me. I love Nintendo as a company and love a lot of the decisions that they make even if some of them are abysmal failures. That said I'm more than willing to look at a decision I deem as ill advised and say "yeah that's dumb" but I won't get brazenly upset over it unless it actually violates some kind of moral laws.

If you like Nintendo's games, buy their products. If decisions like this don't jive with your values, don't make the purchase. It's as simple as that. Don't start popping off on other people for having different values than yourself. There's no need for that.

They've been doing it for years now. Their behavior includes pretending that titles like Knack, The Order, Destiny, The Division, The Crew, and Ryse are good games.

You calm down too. Although in this case you are mostly right.

Haha I was wondering when we'd start to see junior accounts here defending this crap...

Honestly I've seen more Juniors shit up Nintendo threads with bad drive by posts and hostility than I have defending them.

WTF are they thinking? They should have grabbed a couple dozen players and just straight out asked them how they'd like the online portion to work and we would have gotten a normal system instead of this Nintendo ass backwards way.

Now you're just making it obvious. I don't see you lasting much longer here unfortunately 😢

Gaf is hilarious sometimes. You got it all figured out.

Anyways! I hope this is just for when you go traveling or something.

I hope this device fails tremendously, like what the fuck man , cant even provide features from wii u heck even 3ds or wii itself

This is a terrible opinion.

I think anybody reasonable wants Nintendo to see this is a stupid idea and get their act together.
