Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

You're not understanding. If you are playing the Switch on a bus, most likely it's too noisy to hear the game audio, hence headphones. But if you want to play some online gaming, in the same noisy environment, you need a second set of headphones to listen to voice chat. You can't combine both into one pair. That is severely limiting.

You put the headset in your left ear and hear the game sound in mono, only in your right ear

Switch is bringing everything that made GameBoy a success, including mono audio... oh, wait

Guys, I think the audio of the conversation and the audio from the game itself will be streamed to the phone.
It works ths same way when you remote play.

Game audio is going to be streamed to your phone separate from the image on the TV? What kind of wizard magic is being used to sync everything up with all the latency?

Yeah Reggie made this pretty clear in numerous interviews he had. The main argument he seemed to have was that they didn't want people carrying headsets with them if they wanted to chat on the go.

Wouldn't you need a headset even if on the phone unless you're using speakerphone? And if that's the case the Switch would have been just fine using it's speakers?

Reggie should probably clarify things right the fuck now if they dont want people to keep propagating misunderstandings then. Or maybe there isn't a misunderstanding and there is nothing to clarify

The Online Services page to me seems more accurate in what it entails for now.

http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

Note how "Online Lobby & Voice Chat app" is separated entirely from "Online Gameplay". Unless that somehow means "randoms only", the app just seems to me as if it's their answer to party lobbies, which is in no way ideal but not anywhere near as terrible as "you need your phone to play online and that's it".

The ingame audio is not going to come from your phone!

No, it'll come from the Switch.

Is your problem with the fact you're plugging your earphones into a phone, or that fact that you might want to chat to mates, play online, hear the game audio all while outside?

Most online gaming will be done at your home. Your game volume will be coming from your TV and you chat will be, via your phone, to your earpiece. Just like the PS4.

You're picking holes in something that is barely any different that what you do now.

I will post what I posted in other thread...

Okay, anyone defending Nintendo on this needs to stop.

IT'S NOT INNOVATIVE. Because both your competitions provide smart phone apps (on top of onboard console functionality) that basically does the same thing sans voice chat.

IT'S NOT ELEGANT. Because having to juggle two devices to do the same things will never be more elegant than using just one.

I love how in one of the interviews Reggie talks about the reasons the Wii U failed, and how third parties want a robust and fully featured online service, which the Wii U lacked.

Then they give us this...lol. Yeah using two devices to do what the OG Xbox could handle back in 2002 is super robust Reggie.

What do you consider matchmaking in general? I consider it the ability to go online, select a game mode or type, and to be matched with other people in some form or another.
Matchmaking is a peer-to-peer (or sometimes dedicated servers) system where the game software connects you to a random person so as to minimize lag and connectivity issues.

After reading some comments... I just want to read some ideas of how this could work (Online multiplayer on the Go) without the use of an Smartphone or a exclusive sim card for the Switch.. It needs to be simple (Like undocking the Switch)... I have the feeling that when Nintendo shows a video of how this works is going to be fine. I Still dont see any problem with this....

I really don't understand why Reggie decided to start talking about the app now. It won't be out until summer so I doubt we'll get concrete details on how that works any time soon.

Yes, and that's almost certainly not what Reggie was referring to. See the link above.

They took the cheap route and didn't want to invest in a real online infrastructure.
Funny, because what's at stake is that the console lacks the front end, which is handled by smart devices, rather than the infrastructure.

Did they also not want to invest in an online infrastructure for Netflix? Or maybe is this console just very barebones when it comes to the OS? Hm...

None of this bothers me. I think it's going to be interesting. Setup a match at 7pm by scheduling it through the Switch app. Invite your friends while you're still at work, and get it all squared away. Fire up the game at 7pm, and open the app to confirm. Switch boots into the match and you're off to the races.

Conversely, you could boot your console, enter a game, and then just do all that in 30 seconds before you play.

My Vita does it fine without a phone.
You really didnt think your shitty analogy through did you?

sometimes ill use my phone to tether my Vita online.

its simpler. i hit a button on my phone to make it an access point and do everything else on my vita. i can just leave my phone plugged in somewhere and not touch it

Nintendo wants you to be constantly juggling both while playing online

see the difference? you dont strip features out of the damn system and offload them to a phone

its fucking asinine

Well, I don't know, but you can control all your system when you remote play so I assume you can also use voice chat remotely. I've never done it myself though.

Ay? it's a handheld first and foremost, you may play online mostly at home, but I think a lot of other people might want to do what the system was built for.

They may want to hear the game audio as well as the chat

People need to purge this interview from their memories. Pretend it didn't happen. Just read this link.

http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

It won't make everything crystal clear, but I think people will get a better idea of what the app is for.

Keeping your head in the sand because of this interview isnt going to help anything when there are several other instance where Reggie, and even Nintendo's website, line up with this interview.

Every time a new Nintendo home console is announced or launched, I get so excited, frantically searching and missing pre-order after pre-order. Then, inevitably, I start to read more and more, and decide to wait based on awkward or non-standard hardware and software decisions.

Invariably, I always end up passing on the console because of these decisions. Seems like this odd design decision is the tip of the ice berg with the Switch.

Why won't Nintendo make a kick ass home console that is everything the PS4 and XBone are, plus all that awesome stuff Nintendo is?!

Happened to me too.

I was so excited after that teaser video.

Then I saw the price, and lack of pack in. Then the software lineup. More and more gimmicks, again. Then the so called network.

I thought we were getting a relatively powerful handheld that could be docked. It was going to have an amazing lineup, because Nintendo abandoned the Wii U. What else would all of their developers be doing? I thought $250 was a near lock for price. Maybe a $299 deluxe bundle.

And I figured if they were offering the same shitty network that it would at least be free.

The more and more I learn about what the Switch actually is, the more disappointed I become in it.

This is quite literally an objectively worse solution than if people at least had the option to party/matchmake on the Switch itself. I can guarantee you that if this option was available, 99% of people would prefer using it over the super-awesome smartphone app solution. So when people in here say this is a dumbass idea, why are people arguing?

Not sure what the problem is.

If it means I can make the Switch connect to my phone as an access point, and I can put my earphones in my phone for online chat, then that means I can play online, on a bus and chat to people too?

The only people this makes life slightly difficult for, is kids without a phone.

You'd still be able to do that if this was built into the OS. But you wouldn't have to put your earphones into your phone

How in the fuck is me having to plug my headphones+earphones while i have to put my smartphone in a area where it can decently capture my voice while playing the switch with my two hands "barely any different"? Holy shit.
You're also the one that fucking started with the bus situation to begin with if you somehow forgot that. Stop moving those goalposts.

You'd still be able to do that if this was built into the OS. But you wouldn't have to put your earphones into your phone

Also this.

Because a few holdouts are praising this as a genius move. I shit you not.

The flurry of bad news, terrible interviews and lack of information reminds me of the first days/weeks after XB1 was announced

And we all know how that turned out, sales wise

To be fair, we don't have details that suggest you need to constantly juggle the two. It's up to Nintendo to dispel claims that we'll need to "Switch" to our smartphone every 5 to 10 minutes to set something else up.

Guys, I think the audio of the conversation and the audio from the game itself will be streamed to the phone.
It works ths same way when you remote play.
It still sucks though. Why should we have to juggle with our phone's battery life to play some games online?

I strangely like companion apps but this should only be an option. I mean with how many people in the PSN 2FV threads saying they don't have a smartphone(You don't need a smartphone, just text messaging. PLEASE SIGN UP!!!) there are obviously a large number of people even within the bubble of Gaf that don't have them but play a lot of games.

IDK, maybe they will add on device support at some point. Not a big deal for myself though.

What are you talking about? I'm linking to that so people get a better understanding of the service. I'm not defending anything. The very post you linked to uses information from the link I provided. Think before you post.

No one is picking holes, you are just moving goalposts.

Also, PS4 has the functionality to pump both voice chat and game audio through the headphones if you want, which I use a lot. Docked Switch can't even do that.

Welcome to my life since the Nintendo 64

It's not even launching with the system?! Smh

Nope! The "free trial" of the online service begins in March, but the app won't be out until Summer. This can mean one of two things:

- There is a way to handle chat via just the Switch itself and Reggie is doing a bad job at explaining things

- Prior to the summer, any online games won't have voice chat at all.

It could honestly see it happening either way...

Nintendo needs to let us know how things will work at launch as soon as possible. I doubt we'll see the app in March or April,.

No voice chat until the app comes out. So if you want to voice chat while playing Mario Kart 8 online you'll be using another app or service anyway. Or, I guess just call your friend.

Elegant af.

That's not confirmed to be the case. But as stated above, Nintendo really needs to clarify this as soon as possible.

Did the Wii U version have voice chat? Not trying to be snarky, seriously would like to know.

Not even close.. XB1 news were in every big gaming sites... We didn't even see how this could work... Like i said before, we need to see this working.

That doesn't bring much new info tbh.

It clarifies what the app is being used for, and when it will be released, which people in this thread are still currently expressing confusion about (no matchmaking without the app? the app releases when?). The point isn't to present new information, but to present the information that was muddled by this interview.

I use headphones for both in-game audio and voice chat because I don't want to bother other people in the house by playing stuff out loud on the speakers.

I've never owned a bluetooth headset, can I pair it to two separate devices and mix the audio via an app?

my god.

why am i even asking this. tf nintendo

I hadn't thought about it at the time but in hindsight it shows Nintendo wasn't serious about online play for the simple fact that they're not including a mic with the Switch.
