Colin was Right: Same Old Nintendo (Jan 19. 2017)

you should take a look-see in the PS I Love You XOXO thread. people are fucking ridiculous in regards to Colin on here.
You mean the Easy Allies OT 2 thread, right?

Colin is right here. Nintendo's Switch messaging doesn't inspire hope and I won't be picking it up because of their archaic practises. Keep fighting the good fight, Col.

First (and probably last) time watching this dude's videos. I don't have a problem with him but I just don't watch a lot of this stuff in general.

He's not wrong about a lot of stuff. And, based on his tone, it doesn't come from a place of hate. It seems to come from a place of frustration. We all want Nintendo to succeed, but they keep making some questionable design and business decisions.

i'm not sure what the point here is. neither one of those games will be an event level game like breath of the wild, nor will they dampen enthusiasm for it.
Whoa, I mean I'm crazy excited for it, but the gameplay demos released recently have me pulling my expectations back. It seemed very empty and reminded me a lot of MGSV's baren world. "Event level game" seems like a bit of a stretch and over hype.

Lol people using Colin's Vita predictions as a reason to discredit misgiving about the Switch that are actually valid. Don't particularly like the guy, but he's not wrong in this case. The Switch reveal and aftermath have been a shitshow outside of the first party software announcements.

of course it's an event level game. it's been shown off for years and it's going to be the launch title for new hardware, as well as a major departure for a 30 year old franchise. there's going to be eyes on this like there were eyes on ocarina of time and twilight princess.

"Whatever the **** Octopath Traveler is"

Here's a new game with a fresh vibe and he shits on it. He's 100% right everywhere else though. Very disappointing showing by Nintendo and it's disturbing to see just how tone deaf they actually are.

I think we're all looking for that feeling when you bought a DSi/Lite, coming back to innovative Nintendo hardware with a ton of stuff new and old to play.

The expectation for every product should be that it will be a high quality and competitive product. As a consumer I'm not going to congratulate Nintendo for something something a little better than the Wii U. If they can't fulfill industry standards, they don't get industry money.

Seems I didn't express my point well enough, as I never intentioned or stated that Nintendo is to be congratulated for their decisions. Re-read again please. Consumers have been delivered a message, it clearly hasn't mirrored the hopes that some held, and the market will react to whomever buys into their vision(which largely is unchanged for at least a decade now). I personally am completely with you on feeling let down(they are tone-deaf and flippant in their awkward stance to serve both the wider audience and the core), but at no point has the company ever really stated they are getting back into the arms race as so many hoped.

This guy is creating a lot negative speculations with no official confirmations like.

Skyrim is just Skyrim 2011 and no SE.
Fifa is xbox360 port.
No achievements.
No other deals in the pay online system beside the NES/SNES game per month temporally (besides even the web page says there would be also exclusive deals)

Also the comparison he made with online chat with Rainbox Six is plain bad, this guy hasnt any idea that there are actually games like CoD in Wii and Wii U has voice chat, and the quality is not as PS3 or xbox360 but definitely better than Rainbow Six in the first Xbox.

Another thing is Nintendo will never have third party support until their console sells a lot, no matter how powerful they made their hardware console, they just dont have the same user base for their games as in Microsoft or Sony consoles, except games like Rayman, Just Dance, Sonic, Skylanders, are games that third parties do well on Nintendo hardware.

Also what's wrong with Octopath Traveler?

Ahh I see what you mean. I personally don't expect it to reach those heights, but I hope to be wrong. XBX really soured me on Nintendo and Open World, but I understand that was MonolithSoft more than Nintendo. Still, the pessimist is never disappointed :D

Same old Colin.

Funny how he was beaten by a puppet.

EDIT: actually worse than old Colin, at least before he had his facts straight. Now he criticize features without having full information (online mode, what if it's $10 a year? I doubt it'll be, but if his inspiration is John Oliver, then he should be professional like him), and plainly spreads false information.

I think we're all looking for that feeling when you bought a DSi/Lite, coming back to innovative Nintendo hardware with a ton of stuff new and old to play.

actually, that's the feeling i get out of the switch the most. it's not the wii or wii u, but the ds. specifically, the early ds which didn't have a lot of games, but could have had a lot of neat kinds of experiences.

the ds sold really poorly at launch, was routinely beat in sales by the psp for the first few months in japan and the us, and only recovered upon the release of nintendogs (in every region). nintendo was bundling games and had done a price drop within the first year of the system's life, before nintendogs came around. after that, sales stabilized at a higher level. animal crossing and mario kart ds were holiday hits. nsmb had an okay launch in may 2006, and june 2006 is when everything changed with the ds lite and the system turned into the monster we know today.

but i remember that initial period well because it was met with a lot of derision, and nintendo themselves didn't really seem to have 100% faith in it (keeping the gba and game boy brand alive in that time with the game boy micro). when the 3ds came out and initially bombed, there were people here even claiming then that the 3ds was doing well because it was beating the monster that was the ds, when in reality the ds had very humble beginnings.

that is sort of where i see the switch. it's going to have a big start and then build up steam from a comparatively (very) weak second month, culminating in holiday sales that indicate a good future for the platform, which will only improve with price drops and hardware revisions.

It's not supposed to be comedic. Inspiration doesn't mean you're going to straight up copy.

So I don't see the inspiration. It's a guy sitting behind a desk reading opinions like a robot, while some graphics pop up over the shoulder. The funny stuff is the only thing that makes Oliver different from a typical cable news political pundit. It's the entire point.

You don't get to tell Collin whether or not he was inspired by something. Only he knows that.

When you want to watch a youtube channel about gaming but your littles are running around. Only recently discovered that channel myself. I quite enjoy it!

aren't you doing the same thing with Zelda? You made it seem so absurd that Horizon or Nioh or Nier could be better than it?

Seems like both of you have your faith blinders on somewhat, but he did make an excellent point, the most popular and highest rated games don't necessarily come from the hardware manufactures anymore. also, there's been some 'ok-ish' Zelda games IMO, it doesn't have this impeccable track record. Ok if you think it does though.

I mean, it's possible that any of these games could be more critically acclaimed than Zelda and anyone might think one or all of them are better because opinions and shit. Perhaps I'm getting old and starting to be a little conservative with this stuff, but I just don't think we should expect new IPs to be as good as a new Zelda because to me it does have the most impeccable track record possible in the industry. Even the most "ok-ish" game in the franchise, Skyward Sword, was still very well received by fans and critics.

And yeah some of the recent footage showed plenty worthy of criticism.I am tired of dreadfully empty open worlds which may very well happen in BoTW.

I agree with you here, I'm also tired of open worlds. But in this case they have shown so little about it, so while there is some reason to be skeptic I still have faith because Fujibayashi and Aonuma are just really good at what they do. The only other recent comparison I have for it is Dark Souls III, that game was pretty much guaranteed to be well received.

You don't get to tell Collin whether or not he was inspired by something. Only he knows that.

I'm saying it doesn't show through in his actual content. I'm not trying to read his mind. People bring it up to defend aspects of his show, so I think it's fair to actually respond about how it compares. If it's got nothing that makes Oliver special, and it's not supposed to, then it's kind of stupid for it to be brought up over and over.

Yeah I totally get that. There is John Oliver scripted and there is high school kid reading the school news scripted though. It's just my opinion on his delivery. Best of luck to the guy, but it doesn't flow well or sound good to me.

He just started doing it like a month ago. How do you think you get better? lol

It's a custom built port that will employ some waggle or touch?
I guess, they would use motion-controls, so that you can play multiplayer with just one joy-con (since it is missing six inputs). Touch-screen support would be extreme optional, since you can't play it on the TV.

It seems like Colin doesn't believe that corporations should be allowed to act independently in their own perceived self interest.

He wants to seize their means of production and force them to fall in line with the industry, so they can more effectively serve the public good.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Could not be more wrong about that dude.

As with jimquisition. It's all true. And the problem with the truth is that it hurts, as the comments show.

The switch will fail, that much is clear. So the question now, is...what are nintendo going to do when it does?

It's definitely being ported over, the question is from where.

Arlo is love.

Problem with Arlo (in this case) is that he has no insight on how the industry works and speak as a pure Nintendo lover. Not saying it's a bad thing, but it's not a refutal to Colin's video at all. Anyway, I agree with most of Colin's point, but essentially he isn't saying anythin groundbreaking. Jim Sterling basically did the same video and I'd rather listen to him.
Frustrating to see Nintendo come so close to nailing it and yet doesn't. Whole thing made me a bit sad. There's still hope though, some of the games look awesome and I'm sure there's surprises to come.

On another note, do we know for sure there are no trophies? I'm still having this crazy hope that the Switch online service will suprise us in a good way...

You should definitely call and let them know. There might still be time to stop it from even releasing.

Swicth sucks thread number what now? People just love talking about how much Nintendo sucks and all have opinions on how Nintendo should run their own business.

100% agreed.

I love Nintendo games and what not but Colin spoke the complete and utter truth

the truth hurts sometimes so we need to break away from our egos and accept it

this softball approaches some people play with Nintendo just leaves them with their ignorant, ego-centered attitude and view of the world

I mean what makes these guys different from any other console developer?

nothing and so they can be criticized for the stupid stuff they pull as much as anyone

From someone with insight on how the industry works, I think Collin failed to get the main point across (that being, Nintendo hasn't changed at all), even if he is right in a lot of points. In some ways Nintendo did learn with past mistakes, in others they are still lagging behind, but Collin just plain fails to see (or ignores) many things Nintendo is doing right with the Switch coming from WiiU.

Honestly, he just sounds like his reasoning is a little clouded because some of his expectations were frustrated.

It's not ALL true. He did seem to pull some assumptions out of thin air, and got a couple facts wrong.

I think you totally misunderstood the whole point of the video... at no point does he say do as I say, not how you want. He's always been all about the free market. He's illustrating points to where they are going to fail on because as he's mentioned countless times, he wants them to succeed.

Thanks! I'm not completely convinced (it's the same line Konami uses for PC version of PES), but it gives me a little bit o hope.

I don't get why sometimes people are so trusting of game companies and sometimes they don't believe a single thing.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Peter Moore of EA, still one of the least liked companies ever, saying "custom built for the switch" does not mean it isn't based on the PS3/360 version.

I think a couple of you are taking that post too seriously. It's a bit forced, but I think he's aware of Colin's free market stance and is doing some trolling with the Communist framing of Colin's opinion.

Pretty much agree with everything he said. It will be a rough launch, and first year. No reason for WiiU owners to upgrade either. But having all their games in one system will definitely make this console a great one, in a couple of years. Not sure if that will shrink their overall market though.

Exactly. Notice he didn't respond when askied if it was running on frostbite. I think its safe to say the previous gen version of the game is at the very least the foundation of the switch release. And more likely, IS the previous gen release with some waggle modes added. We'll see once its out and its analysed. But as far as assumptions go, it's a safe one to make.
