Horizon Zero Down and Breath of The Wild coming the same week. Will Horizon suffers ?

Sony will be perfectly alright, but it's still bad timing at least from my point of view, I own and play on all consoles but Zelda (and Switch) will swallow everything that week and possibly weeks thereafter. Tbh they could easily cook Horizon a bit more and release it by the end of the year instead, there is no rush to get it out right now imo.

nah, nintendo games don't effect the others, no matter how good they are, even the best of them, Zelda, won't effect a new IP

But in this case no PS4 owener will say "I'll go out and buy a Switch and Zelda instead Horizon."

One such owner here. Besides, Sony offers huge discounts quickly on PSN, so much rather buy Horizon in the summer with a discount.

But to the point: PS4 install base is huge, most likely Sony will just do another round of marketing around April/May (maybe even with small discount) as Zelda will crowd out the media in March.

By this logic Ratchet and Clank should outsell Mario Odyssey.

Ratchet is released in a context where dozens of quality Third Parties and First Party games exist at once.

Mario is basically the one game to get on the console in that release window (so far).

But anyway, my initial plan was to buy a switch and Zelda !

The battery life and EU price (a joke) prevented me from doing that though, so hello Horizon.

I was only going to get Horizon if Zelda wasn't a launch title, it'll be interesting to see how many of me there are out there. This is a console launch and one of the biggest games of the year, it could very well hurt Horizon.

How will Zelda crowd out media?

ill be getting both but if i really had to choose it would be difficult, seeing as how i dont own a wii u thus need to buy a switch to play the latter, so i would probably go with horizon for that reason.

but i am getting a switch so why not both fuck it.

People putting-off their preorders doesn't really matter much when they get swept up by the next people in line for a preorder, that much I can tell you. And mind you that whatever person feels the switch is off message for them will PROBABLY opt for the Wii U version of the game anyways, and for that situation I'd still add that to the total Zelda count.

Oops. Almost forgot about the WiiU version.

The game is more than done why should they cook anymore? Makes no sense for their business since they want to start working on new projects ASAP.

The market is plenty big enough to support one without the other being negatively affected. Especially as big as the PlayStation ecosystem is now.

Nah I dont agree with that. Install base is never an indicator for good sales. Otherwise we wouldn't have seen so many flops in the last 30 years on every leading console.
Horizon needs to prove that it is not just Far Cry Primal with robot dinosaurs and Zelda needs to prove that it is more than an walking simulation. So in the end the worth of mouth will be crucial for the success after launch.

@ the bolded!

I think they will both do extremely well. Zelda being the only aaa game on release on switch while horizon being eagerly anticipated as well.

Honestly horizon has a chance to flop but based on the previews it's a very small chance. Zelda is gonna get eaten up. The people were thirsty for a new zelda.

I'm definitely doing this too. There will be a % of people who would have bought Horizon, who'll now wait for discounts.

I really don't understand how nobody sees the similarities between the two games. They're both open world adventure games, and people made a huge fuss about Titanfall releasing so close to Battlefield and CoD.

Personally, I was going to buy Horizon day 1,but I will be getting a Switch and Zelda on launch, so I'm holding off on Horizon until I'm finished with Zelda. There's no point paying full price when I won't be playing a game right away :) that's how backlogs get out of control.

So people saying 'there's no crossover on these markets' are clearly wrong - indicated by the number of people in this thread who are holding off.

Dont think there will be a big impact - but for a new IP like Horizon a little more breathing room wouldnt have been the worst place. If the quality is there it shouldnt be an issue though.

Horizon, Mass Effect, and NieR all releasing very close to each other is the number one reason I haven't preordered a Switch.
I might get Zelda at launch for Wii U, but I'm definitely prioritizing the slew of PS4 games coming out.

I think it'll do fine. Sure, there will be a focus on the switch that week on the coverage sites, in store and so on, and I think specifically in the case of these two games, it's not unbelievable to think there will be people who want one and have to choose. Personally, I'm holding off on Horizon for a few weeks, but the reality is there will be tons of PS4 owners out there on launch day not buying a switch, even once every launch day switch has been sold through. Whether Horizon does well or not will be down to the game's quality and Sony's marketing, not the switch or BoTW.

My biggest question with Horizon is still; can it be too good to be true? IT literally looks wonderful, and Guerilla have made beautiful games before, very fun games too, but with serious flaws that put off many. Fingers crossed they nail it this time.

Horizon is going to get hurt by Mass Effect if anything.

This is a pretty good shout.

As A WiiU owner and Switch buyer, I'm obviously going to be playing Zelda one way or the other.

But taking that away, if I was looking for a meaty single-player game to be buying for my PS4 right now I'd be eyeing up Mass Effect more so than Horizon. I'm hopeful Horizon will be good, but I'm yet to be convinced that Guerrilla are worth banking on with a pre-order.

God of War 3 is over 5mil and I believe the first two were in the 4mils range

Little Big Planet sold 5 million too.

Sometimes I get a little excited about Zelda BOTW then I remember I would have to buy a Nintendo console to play it that enthusiasm just fades away. Not willing to pay that tax.

Even if 1 in every 20 PS4 owners bought Horizon it'd sell 2 million. It won't suffer for anything.

I would even propose that it could outsell Breath of the Wild. Yeah, I went there.

i think horizon will sell to the people it was going to in the first place. it's had several strong trailers and should review well. if it had a little more room, i think it would simply do better, but it's not just zelda crowding the same space - the whole quarter is packed with big titles. i think something like mass effect andromeda would have a larger impact considering you don't have to buy a new console to get it, and it's also a well-established ip.

One game (BotW) will continue to sell well long after launch and the other (HZD) will be bought by a small but vocal minority on the PS4 only for sales to dip once the next hotness rolls around. Sony will include it in their Holiday 2017 bundle to be sure.

What do you consider small? Horizon has hype from more than hardcore PS4 fans. People are buying PS4s to play it.

I'd be highly surprised if Zelda and the Switch had a major impact on Horizon's initial sales. Sure, Horizon may lose a few potential day one sales, but it's never going to be something that'll severely impact the performance of the game.

Personally, Zelda's release at the start of the March and Nier a week later have bumped Horizon out of my immediate plans alongside Mass Effect, I'll grab both once they drop in price. I can't wait to play Horizon and I'm certain I'll love it, but it's just in an unfortunate release window for me now.

However much Bloodborne sold, they could mean less.

Horizon has WAY more mass market appeal than Bloodborne and I say that as someone who believes Bloodborne is the best game of this generation, but that would still put it around 3 million sales. I expect it to do better than that provided it reviews well. I think 4 to 5 million lifetime is realistic.

It'll depend a lot on first impression appeal.

Not significantly. Different platform and all. I think any game on any platform might take a small hit in sales because people are spending a lot of money on a new console and maybe wait for sales on games for existing consoles.

If they would release on the same console I could see a problem. But in this case no PS4 owener will say "I'll go out and buy a Switch and Zelda instead Horizon."
Horizon will do fine but won't get much share in the press when there is a new Zelda in the same weak. But I doubt that will matter for the sales. Sony promoted the game vvery good in the last few months.
Hey, I did that! (Say switch +Zelda instead of horizon)
Can't afford both

Both of these games will sell really well. The only downside is that I'm interested in both so I have to choose. There's no ignoring Zelda, so I'll get into Horizon later this spring probably. But boy do we get some heavy hitters early in this year.

Uhhh no?

Switch will have like 1/80th the install base around launch.

I grew up with Nintendo and Zelda but I think I'm putting the priority on Horizon. Nintendo hasn't earned my trust back yet after years of terrible game design, particularly with respect to the Zelda franchise
