Horizon Zero Down and Breath of The Wild coming the same week. Will Horizon suffers ?

Unlikely given the PS4 install base vastly outnumbered the Wii U and 3DS and there isn't much overlap between fans of Nintendo and Sony platforms. Sony fans will enjoy Horizon while Nintendo fans will enjoy Zelda

As an owner of a PS4, Wii U and soon Switch, I'm not really sure about that. If Horizon is any good, I will certainly buy and thoroughly enjoy it. The only constraint is my free time, which probably will push my purchase of Horizon to a later moment. While the games might be distinct from each other, I still feel like they share some similarities which might attract people who like the other game.

Very unlikely to have much of an effect. That said if one suffers its more likely to be the new IP rather than the established one. If it gets good reviews it should have some legs so it really shouldn't matter in the long run.

Will it sell less to the core multiple platform owners? Probably. But the game also heavily targets the 18-29 female demo, so that will soften the blow.

I get that nearly every new thread needs to be about Switch in some way, but this is fucking stupid... A game on a console with 55+ million install base is going to be ok even if a big game that's on a new console (and an old console) is coming out at the same time.

Horizon will do fine. There is already a huge userbase for this game.

Post-release coverage, on the other hand, well that depends on how well the game will be received cause it will compete against a console launch.

Besides the mentioned obvious difference of userbases, BotW is going to be an evergreen title that sells all year long, I expect most new Switch owners throughout the year will pick up Zelda. So it's not like changing the release date would help HZD if it was negatively affected by Zelda(which it won't be).

Joke thread?

First of all, Zelda is hardly a sales titan.

Secondly, it's releasing on a hybrid that nobody owns and a console that next to nobody owns.

Thirdly, they're completely different audiences.

Horizon is going to sell 5-7 million which is a lot more than Zelda will.

That's not to say Zelda won't be a much better game but I'm not splashing out £270 for the privilege to play it.

Why exactly would a PS4 exclusive and a Wii U/Switch exclusive be in competition? And on top of that why do you think it would be to the detriment of the platform with monumentally larger sales?

Still got a giggle out of me

I'd say even if there is a crossover for people (like me). I'd rather get a 70€ Horizon than a 450€ Zelda.

I don't think the 50+ million base will pay 360$ just for one game instead of just 60 even if it was bad lol.

If horizon flops then, it's either because it's bad or because of the marketing.

Yes, Zelda isn't a sales titan anymore, but keep your expectations in check, Mass Effect 3 sold 6 million on multiple platforms, Horizon needs good reception and decent legs in order to sell ~6 million.

I think 4 million is more realistic, maybe it can reach 6 after a few years of PSN flash sales.

If you don't own a Wii U, Zelda is a $360 purchase. The same can be said if you don't own a PS4, but at 50+ million and counting, you're far more likely to have one than the other.

Horizon will be half the price in couple of months time, I'd imagine plenty of people will wait on it anyway considering how quickly AAA games drop at the moment.

I don't think Zelda will affect it as much as the crowd of high-profile PS4 games all releasing in the next few weeks will- some of which people are going to wait on.

Don't think so different userbase,
Personally I was going to buy both at launch but now I have to buy also Switch so I decided to wait for Horizon a bit.

I agree with this quite a bit.

I didn't realize they were coming out so close.

I'm weirdly interested in Horizon despite it being a game I generally would hate, probably I just really like the idea of robot dinosaurs.

Going to play Zelda though just because I'm buying the Switch, I may as well use the damn thing.

I am pretty skeptical of Horizon - MC and combat look good, dialogue was cringeworthy. I can wait on that and maybe even MEA and P5 while I play Zelda. Those other games will only get cheaper in the meanwhile.

5-7 million for Horizon ? Really ? Please...

Different user bases. WiiU/Switch owners that also have a PS4 are likely to hold off on Horizon depending on reviews in my opinion.

I know I'll be Zeldaing and Snipperclipping and given that Horizon is a single player primarily means that I don't mind waiting for a price cut next year during the post Christmas lull.

Can't see sales for Horizon being massively affected though.

Considering I don't have a Wii U, nor will I be buying a Switch any time soon, I'm getting Horizon. Most of my gaming friends don't own a Wii U. Though, to be fair, they're also oddly addicted to Ark...

There are tens of millions of people on Ps4 that don't own a WiiU and won't be picking up a switch at launch.

I've been super excited for both, but now that we know botw release date.... sorry Horizon, I'll get to you eventually.

:(

Skyward Sword has a console base of 104m and sold 2.4m globally...

Skyward Sword sold 3.76 million units during its first six months of release. I don't believe we have updated numbers beyond that, which was half a decade ago. BotW is also is far more anticipated game than SS ever was.

Horizon Zero Dawn : wednesday

Breath of the Wild + Switch : Friday

I'm afraid Horizon will struggle... Should Sony change the release date if the game si gold ?

Will anyone buy the switch outside Japan ? Joking...BUT Allot of people buying Horizon in West outside specialist forums will probably not even know what Switch is.

BOTW relies heavily on Nostalgia from its fanbase, it looks washed out and poor graphics which spawns well spaced 3-5 enemies at a time and empty like most open worlds. Have yet to see many things on the screen so it looks empty.

Maybe Horizon will be similarly barren. We wait.
