LTTP: DMC3

Sequel to this.

One thing that immediately stood out to me was that this game is a lot harder than the first one. thankfully it's a bit more forgiving too since dying doesn't mean you have to restart the entire mission. The game is also much longer than the first game as well. Took me about twice as long to beat this game then the first.

I liked that the story was more prevalent this time, and I enjoyed it well enough. Though I thought Virgil was a bit underwhelming considering how much of a popular character he was. The level design was nice as well. I like that they kept a similar level design to the first one but with new areas. Bossed were good for the most part as well. I also liked how the game really forces you to know what your doing. You're going to get you ass kicked if you don't effectively learn the game's systems and use all of the tools at your disposal.

Weapon switching was great though I wish there was a better way to switch styles other than having to use save points. I found most of the guns to be pretty bad though. Also idk if it was just the HD but a lot of the models in this game are horrendous. Especially Dante's.

I also like how over top the Dante was. The first game was bit, but they really went balls deep with this one.

Overall I really enjoyed it.

It's my favourite game in the series! The devs wanted to put in real time style switching but the PS2 didn't have the memory required to do it. They had to wait until DMC4 on PS3 to achieve that.

I know people rag on the DMC games for being nonsensical and having bad stories but I felt DMC3's story was probably the best of the lot by and far and in general one of the gold standards for character action games which usually don't bother with a story outside a framework to set up boss fights and escalating threats. DMC3 gave you a decent set of characters, some mystery, some revelations and wrapped it up in a very cool, over the top package with some great cheese rock, some insane cutscenes from the director of Versus and one of the best credits scenes ever. That and the trilogy of fights between Dante and Vergil were amazingly well pulled off both in terms of the story around them, the build up and the actual battles themselves really forced you to "git gud"

For the original experience, start from scratch on hard mode and pick Yellow Orbs.

If there was a definitive Top 25 Video Games of All Time list, Devil May Cry 3 would be in there. Game is GOAT tier.

DMC3's story is pretty solid. Also, the scene where Arkham
is revealed to be the real villain after the second Vergil fight
has better story telling and does a better job of building up its villain than anything the DmC reboot managed to do. That scene does such a great job of establishing how incredibly fucked up Arkham is

DMC 3 is the best game in the series. Oh and Vergil is really fun to play as so if you haven't you should.

Also why'd you skip DMC 2? :I

If you want style switching on the fly you can spend 3 hours modding and fixing the PC version of dmc3.
Or just play DMC4

DMC3 has the strongest story and actual like main campaign mode, but DMC4 has the best combat in the series without a doubt.

Also why'd you skip DMC 2? :I
Because we all told him too because that game is terrible and makes me physically upset.

I always thought it was a lot of fun with the new weapons and different styles, but more than anything else I just think it's an important landmark for action games. I can't think of another game that pushed mastery of it's mechanics as hard as DMC3 before it, even the first. I think it will always be a special game to those who played its initial release!

Fantastic game. I actually platinum'd the game a week ago; felt so good haha.

Yepyep, the game's story deserves more credit. The dynamic and rivalry between the two sons of Sparda is still some of my favorites in gaming.

One of the best rival dynamics of any video game out there.

I love how Dante beats and blinds Beowulf, but he bounces back, only to find and be killed by Vergil, who proceeds to get his Devil Arm and use it against Dante in their second fight. It's such a neat inversion of the series convention of getting a weapon from the boss, and it doubles as a motivational tool because dammit, Dante was there first.

lol because everyone in the last thread told me too.

Yeah this was my exact thought process. It made me doubly mad since that was the one weapon I was actually looking forward too.

My favorite DMC, and one of my favorite games of all time.
My whole teenage years were built upon it - me and a friend tried to finish it many times to unlock the hardest difficulties and to beat the bloody palace together...I've played multiple versions of it - the original PS2, the special edition and the PC one, with multiple playthrough in each one...(my favorite being the special edition PS2)
it was also the first "proper" H&S game I've played and got me to love all the similar ones...love everything about it from story to combat and I actually think 1 is harder lol

Oh my god the story was great. And it all led up to an amazing final battle that you really cared about. AND THE MUSIC THO?!
I love this game to death

"Dante..."

Well you can mod it in the PC version or just go ahead to the next game:

Will be see you guys again for DMCV.

You thought the Vergil fights were underwhelming? I thought they were the best bosses in the game! Vergil 2 is especially my favorite because he uses the Beowulf gauntlets.

I think he meant the character rather than the boss fights mechanically.

False either way.

I found it hard to distinguish Virgil's character from pretty much every rival/evil brother you commonly see in Japanese media. Maybe if I had played it when it came out I would think differently. But he didn't really impress me. That doesn't mean I dislike him but I didn't think he was all that amazing.

Glad you enjoyed it. DMC3 is my personal favorite and really paved the way for Stylish free form action combat ad we know it.

DMC4 does offer style switching, and DMC3 PC has mods that currently allow style switching as well:

I like how in each Vergil fight he gets progressively better at dealing with the unconventional moves that Dante has.

To me, Vergil's strength as a rival lies in the encounter pacing and the juxtaposition of him against his brother. The two siblings make a stronger whole.

He acts as a barometer by which you measure your skill, both as Dante as a character and you as the player. Vergil is far stronger than you from the outset. The intro of the game shows Dante's defeat at the hands of Vergil. The remainder of the game has you chasing after him. During the first duel, Dante loses. The second fight is interrupted and ends in a draw. By the third battle, Dante finally wins. It cements that Dante has finally trumped Vergil in power and your own skills have evolved as a player.

These fights frame the development of Dante's combat ability, and act as a testing ground for what you have learned. Each Vergil encounter escalates appropriately, and in tandem with Dante's growth. Vergil matches you and Dante every step of the way:

Mission 7- No Devil Trigger for either character. Vergil has one weapon, Dante has three.

Mission 13- Vergil & Dante both have Devil Trigger (gains health regen/armor in DT). Vergil shows that he can unlock new Devil Arms like Beowulf and use it against you. Vergil performs real time weapon switching towards the last half of the fight.

Mission 20- Vergil realtime weapon switches mid combo constantly. Vergil has super Devil Trigger moves.

And furthermore, Vergil acts as a foil and an impetus for Dante's character development within the story. Demon vs human. Family oriented vs. Stranded and dejected. Obsessive and driven vs. Aloof and lackadaisical. And ultimately it's Vergil's encounters and defeat that allows Dante to accept part of who he is and take responsibility for his family's transgressions.

Amazing game, but it was hard as hell and very unforgiving. Played the original on PS2. Still have nightmares of Agni and Rudra on the higher difficulties.
