I think I get it. He thinks that if the popular vote were what counts, he'd be able to campaign with that in mind and then win (because he'll win at everything he does, of course). As long as he needs to play the EC game, that puts him in danger of losing the popular vote.

It's just his usual narcissism and fragile ego.

I would love to see him try to campaign in California under a popular vote system. It won't end well for him.

How do you mean. He just needs to tell them what they want to hear.
A politician will change his coat depending on his surroundings.

He lost by CA by around 4.3 million votes in November. Just changing campaign style or tactics won't help him reduce the margin he lost by much in that state if the EC did not exist.

Just because he's a horrible person doesn't mean he's got no good ideas ever. Such a bill would need bipartisan approval so it probably couldn't be too fucked up. Of course the parties probably aren't interested in changing that system.

This is where we do the obvious appeal-to-ego reverse psychology ploy from some childhood tv movie, that even as a kid you thought was too stupid and obvious to ever work in real life on a real human being:

"You say you'd win a popular vote? Prove it in 4 years...unless you're...chicken. You chicken, McTrump?"
