Horizon Zero Dawn - Preview Thread [Up: All Previews Live]

Engadget preview says the story is really compelling with rich characters.

I didn't love that 30 minute preview but then the player seemed to be taking on the beasts in the most boring way imaginable. Writing seems fine to me. Voice acting...eh, at least Aloy sounds good.

I'm not feeling the body animations in cutscenes at all tho. Just idk very stiff?

It's leaning a little more toward Bethesda than Bioware in terms of animation jank, but it absolutely does feel like a middle ground between them.
Isn't that just like every RPG ever?
Or I'm missing something?
Definitely a widespread thing in a lot of western RPGs. Feel like Witcher 3 made a good effort to have Geralt and an NPC look very lively though.

Yeah, that first cutscene is rough and lip syncing uin general isn't great, but everything else looks good.

Thankfully i'm mainly in for the gameplay, world and monster hunting
and those glorious graphics
.

I think the voice acting complaints are a bit overblown. I'll give you the crazy guy on the cliffs, not exactly a good reading, but everyone else - especially Aloy - sounds just fine.

Game looks incredible, the mechanics look sound, and I actually like the detective vision. Probably the best detective vision I've seen since it does little to warp the colors or picture comparatively to the Batman detective vision. It's simple, gives good UI feedback, and also highlights weakpoints and weaknesses which is what I like in my RPGs (libra, or Tales use of weakness feedback).

Completely agree.

Yeah, that guy wasn't good but Aloy was. Also the antagonistic guy in other trailers voiced by Crispin Freeman sounds great (not surprising given his great experience).

Yeah I love the effects on the UI for it.

lol..like all open world games, some quest/cut-scenes will be B-line movie, and some will be oscar worthy. The cutscene with the character "Varl" is very well voiced, sounds quite incredible really, hopefully he's one of the character that tag along.

The eye candy is to tasty to ignore...

So what other existing games compare with this in terms of gameplay?? Is this more zelda or more witcher 3 or none of that??

Is it 100% single player?

This has piqued my interest.
Still, I have plenty to play right now, and it does look like yet another open world game. I'm not sick of them yet, but...it can wait a few months.

Voice acting seemed terrible to me because of how dramatic it sounded with the wooden, expressionless, animations. Super jarring.

Otherwise it looks pretty good

I'm still not all that hyped, but tot the Ubisoft complaint it's not like most open world games don't do similar things. I'm more worried because GG doesn't really have a good track record.

Mostly visually. Primal is first game that came to my mind when i started watching the video.
Also gameplay, like gathering resources, crafting... it's very similar.

But visually it's head and shoulder above primal, and gathering resources is also similar to The Witcher 3.

Crafting might have a similar UI.

It means games like Skyrim and The Witcher 3 aren't all that fun to play, because of their atrocious combat which is not exactly an uncommon opinion to have.

Having the opinion that it is atrocious would be a pretty uncommon opinion if you're not living in a life made completely of hyperbole, or on gaf but that's pretty much the same thing.

Witcher combat is not the best combat I've seen in a RPG but it's FAR from atrocious, the same with skyrim. Personally I had a good time with both.

Graphics are beautiful but the game itself looks like an extremely by-the-numbers open world romp. While I hope it stays fresh and engaging, I have a bad feeling that it'll wind up being one of those games that get real old real fast. Hope I'm wrong, would love a great new AAA title as a showpiece for my Pro.

From the stuff we've seen so far today, it seems to be more like Witcher 3, but it probably won't have as much depth since they said the want the mechanics to be more approachable. Combat, however, looks much better.

Waypoints and markers and more waypoints and markers ugh.

I hope the combat at least makes up for the typical open world design I'm seeing here.

Gameplay feels boring but it's visually excellent. The only exciting gameplay part was those machines shooting energy balls.

Well, while I'm not going to ding them for it, I think they should be aspiring to be better. I'd also argue that the INCREDIBLE character models make the animations seem worse, if that makes sense.

Gathering herbs, Crafting, Following bloodtrails, Good graphics, Pretty characters, Great voice acting, Great writing

Oh wait that was Witcher 3
I mean:

Gathering herbs, Crafting, Following bloodtrails, Good graphics, Pretty characters, Crappy voice acting, Crappy writing

Without the writing the witcher 3 would have been a slog to play. The gameplay in this looks actually fun to play.

I feel like people would be more excited if they showed more of the story. They are trying to keep it under the wraps, but from the sounds of it, the story seems to be a big draw of this game.

The gameplay looks fine. Just remember that the player style might be not like you will play or might even look boring. People can make everything look boring and tbf. exciting.

OK I don't think I'm gonna buy it, such a beautiful looking game, maybe the best I've seen, is gonna be ruined by awful writing, voice acting and lip syncing animation, not sure about the gameplay and quests quality as well, shame :/

Totally. See LA Noire for more evidence on this, where the facial animations are incredible, but the body animations are not.. Uncanny Valley is real.

Gathering herbs, Crafting, Following bloodtrails, Good graphics, Pretty characters, Great voice acting, Great writing, average monsters, terrible combat.

Fixed ;)

Make sense. Good character model and graphic make typical RPG animation stand out.

So the gameplay and quests and quality could be good but you won't buy it because of the cutscenes of which u can not play?
