Nintendo Switch AC adapter is an old-fasioned "wall wart"

Would it be safe to use something like an anker power bank with a usbc cable to charge the Switch? They seem to work great for my phone.

The nicer power banks will regulate current output based on the device they are connected to, so you should be fine. The drawback is most power banks won't be able to supply the current the Switch needs. You probably are only going to trickle charge the thing. I wouldn't expect to be able to be plugged in and playing from a power bank and maintain a level charge. I picked up a spare AC adapter and have a power bank I plan on testing out before I open up the spare adapter.

Is that a 39W power supply? The Switch dock mode needs 15v at 2.6A.

So what are some good alternatives that won't screw up the Switch?

Honestly never know this is some issue. My Moto X Pure came with similar plug, as well as my Windows tablet

Hold on, the Pure's charger isn't that big. If the Nintendo charger were more in line with what the Pure has, it wouldn't be that bad.

You're 100% right....

They do say that if you want to use USB C though, it may charge faster than the dock charger, but it can't do Quick Charge.
????

Quick charge is part of the switch. It is active automatically with the appropriate chargers.

This is annoying, what's even more annoying is that it probably means that I can't just hook it to my tv's USB port and charge it that way NES mini style...
Oh well, I'll have to make do with an extension cord :/

You do know that the USB port on the TV is just either 2.5W or 5W max, right? Those can't even charge tablets properly lol.

OK, let's can the meta-commentary about whether or not this is thread-worthy and whether or not it's legitimate to even be expressing an opinion about this. You're on a video game message board. Everything discussed here is ultimately trivial and every opinion expressed here is ultimately about something trivial. But we welcome that because we're interested in discussing every facet of this industry and its products, and yes, that includes the hardware design of power adapters and whether they are good or bad, convenient or inconvenient, modern or dated, well-designed or not. It doesn't make any sort of sense to be OK with threads about hardware skins and colors, the size of controllers, the capacity of game cards, supported microSD types, which USB cables are sufficient, or whether the latest HDMI is supported, but draw the line for discussion-worthiness in front of the size and portability of the power adapter. That doesn't mean anyone is "outraged" or "trying to blow it up," anymore than anyone discussing anything on this site is. If you see someone starting a change.org petition about this and you think that's foolish and want to express your ultimately-just-as-trivial-opinion that it is so, contact the petition owner and express that directly to them. But it's not anyone else's place to tell people on this site what is and isn't worth caring about.

You can use what you want.

I’ll maybe use this:

Can even swap the plug part for a cord.

And this is also annoying.
It's still enough to power up my NES mini.
Having the same setup for the Switch would have been awesome and a way to deal with the shitty "wall mart".
It's ok I'll do differently.

This is part of the TOS I think, I don't know why there is a need for a reminder all the time.
And by that I mean people should know better than to do that!

On topic: I do prefer the external power brick design instead of the bulky ac adapter or larger sized console with internal power supply. I liked it on the Wii U and my X51, works great for my set up. Prefer it on my Chromebook versus the Macbook bulky ac adapter desgin as well.

The good thing is that the power connection is standard USB Type-C so you can use any Type-C charger with enough juice going trough it.

Your NES Mini is also way less powerful than the Switch.

From a consumer PoV I certainly don't give a shit about that.
Would it be awesome if that was possible?
Yes.
Is there a reason it's not possible?
Yes.
Would it be a better product if that was possible?
Yes.
For that matter all systems should work like that.
Of course there's reasons why that's not the case, but they still should.

You know what else would be awesome? If my PS4 Pro worked on 2 AA batteries! Then I could bring it anywhere! Everything should just work on 2 AA batteries. Better yet, 2 AAA batteries.

As reported, the Nintendo Switch will charge faster only when directly hooked to the AC adapter versus cradled on the dock.

secondarticle said:
AC Adapter output (from dock to handheld) DC 5 V - DC 15 V, 2.6 A - Switch has max power draw of 39W while charging on cradle, supports Type-C quick-charge*

Thanks for posting those links. Really clears things up.

Lol, I will just use my NES power adapter. It is probably compatible.

Never change Nintendo.
No, it's probably not. If it works, at peak load it will just keep it from draining faster.

Regular USB bricks are 5W, Switch will need more surely. At least in the 10-12W ballpark.

There is a little piece of all nintendo consoles on the Switch

Return of "C-Buttons" (N64)
Return of 3rd Parties from the 90's (Bomberman, Street Fighter 2) (SNES)
Motion Controls (Wii)
NES style Power Block (NES)
Portability (Game Boy line)
TouchScreen (DS-line)

Had you given us Digital buttons and you'd have Gamecube covered Nintendo!!!

It should run on solar power.

Nintendo had designed everything about the switch. Then tension sleeves are hideous. Its sad they skimped on the the adapter, though it isnt a biggie

You haven't thought this through. It should run on oxygen because how the hell do you plan to use it at night? Oxygen is always around.
Are you crazy? It should run on Carbon Dioxide and convert that into Oxygen, so that I can play it in sealed room, such as in a submarine or spacecraft.

On topic: In the EU, the plug looks okay to me. Not sure why the US one is so weird.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
I really don't see the problem. It's narrower than the plug part itself so it will easily fit on a strip.

"Old-fasioned"[sic]? Seriously? It's a plug. It's not exactly something you need to worry about when trying to keep up with the Joneses.

God, no.

Not only is it USB-B Mini, not USB-C, it draws no where near enough juice to power the Switch in dock mode.
Well, the brick itself is USB-A, shouldn't be a problem to use with USB-C devices just like it isn't a problem to use with USB-B micro devices: it needs a USB-A to USB-C cable.

Within the juice part it lies the issue, though.

You bought a consumer product that Sony released last fall that run on 2 AA batteries?
From a consumer point of view, I don't give a shit.

It should run on solar power.

Technically that may already be the case if you have the correct installation.

OK so this is hardly scientific but I zoomed the image of the Switch AC adapter to make the USB-C plug match the size of one on a cable I have, and then held the 3DS adaptor up to the "wall wart" part. It looks basically comparable in size to the 3DS adapter, if not a little smaller, albeit boxier.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
AVGN criticized this kind of power brick design as far back as 2007.

It is THE CURRENT YEAR and this shit still continues. It is not acceptable.
Really?
