Nintendo Switch AC adapter is an old-fasioned "wall wart"

Fucking Nintendo, what a shit console. Do they REALLY expect me to fit this AC adapter in my house?
LOL!

Lucky I have one of these for when I'm on the go. I should photoshop the brick in the tray.

Using that logic, ITT I learned that Nintendo is too poor to design a plug that won't obstruct other outlets like Apple can.

Looks like a sleeker version of the 3DS power adapter that easily fits next to another plugs on a power strip.

How is that slicker when it's bigger than the 3DS power adapter?

Well a cuboid is a sleeker shaped compared to that rounded lump shape that is the 3DS plug.

I can only judge by the picture on the box, but it doesn't look that bigger and even if it is fractionally so, it's really not going to be a problem in my eyes.

But it's Nintendo, they'll get away with it. Their fans support everything they do.

This is just... so frustratingly idiotic. It's just a power adapter. My external hard drives have bigger power adapters, My Macbook has a bigger power adapter. Electronic things need power and sometimes the electronics in the power adapters are big. This one, judging by the picture, is around the same size as the 3DS charger.

I really hate inline power bricks. You know why? cable management is absolutely painful, they need to stay near the power outlet, but they come with 5 feet of extra cable just in case the nearest power outlet is 30 feet away from where the device sits. So then you're using zip ties or wrapping cable to shorten it, making it that much more bulky and ugly, making it that much harder to hide. This sits on the power strip. ALL of my power strips have enough space to support this type of adapter without blocking any of the outlets.

I hated the power solution for the Wii U and the Gamepad. Hated it. Dealt with it, but hated it. It was ugly, and moving the console was a PITA. Charging the gamepad was just... stupid. The one inline power brick that doesn't have enough cable slack is the one you actually may want enough length to keep charging it while you're holding it farther away from where everything is plugged in. Just stupid.

This... I can deal with it. It will work exactly like my 3DS charging solution does now. I have a USB charger for my 3DS, along with a wall charger next to my bed and at my desk where it normally sits when I'm not playing it.

It's just a stupid thing to complain about, but when it comes to Nintendo, people seem desperate to find the smallest things they can complain about.

I don't mean to call you idiotic personally, just that mindset really frustrates me. This Nintendo fan apologist thing is such an obvious straw man.

It's like almost three times thicker than the 3DS adapter.

3DS Power Adapter:

Height6.96 inches
Width3.66 inches
Depth1.25 inches
Weight0.28 pounds

Switch:

Height7.36 inches
Width3.39 inches
Depth1.77 inches
Weight0.51 pounds

Slightly taller, slightly deeper, actually not as wide as the 3DS charger.

You're comparing the box dimensions not the adapter. Hell pull out a ruler and draw those dimensions out. That would be one huge adapter.

I think it's silly that the plug is that big but I think people ate getting a little bit too upset over a power cable. Also, aren't there supposed to be USB C to USB third party chargers?

If it's just a USB-C cable, why didn't they make the adapter/cable modular? As in detachable.

That way you could plut it into any USB-C outlet with sufficient power. Having to always carry a brick like this is dumb.

Those break ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

I have two gone shit just this past month. From normal use. Fuck that shit.

Nintendo is thinking us who might like to take the adapter on the go. I hate that big lump in the middle of my cord when I need to carry my laptop around. My wife's laptop has an adapter like the Switch's and it is SO MUCH better.

What the hell, how does a separate cable make something more prone to breaking than the annoying rubber bendy part that's fixed to a dumb brick? How are you wrecking a simple USB port?

I'm calling bullshit or you're just not talking about the same thing as me. Phones and tablets have come with modular chargers for years now and they are perfectly fine. It gives people more flexibility in charging their devices.

I generally agree with this but USB-C outlets aren't very common yet, and I think the integrated brick design saves them a few bucks.

I'm looking to get a USB-C cable when outlets are common. Until then will probably carry a USB-A to USB-C. Not even sure what plugs will provide sufficient power in that situation though, but I'm hoping even a basic one can slowly charge the Switch when the Switch is off.

No USB-C shit is cheap yet though, unfortunately.

I don't understand why every single damn adaptor doesn't have foldable prongs like Apple stuff does. It makes things so much easier on the go.

Is this just bad designed or is it because it needs power and portability so it's standard?

Assuming it's not much bigger than the 3DS adapter, portability is likely the concern. That in itself isn't a bad design.

But they're definitely saving a few bucks since there's ways to make smaller adapters that deliver on the same amount of power.

But it doesn't obstruct other plugs in a horizontal power strip. It's not about the size, it's about how it blocks other plugs because of the design. I clearly say "obstruct" in my post that you're quoting.

Yes it does? I'm looking at my power strip right now with this plugged in, it's covering 3 plugs.

Not to excuse wall warts, buying a pack of 1ft plug extenders helps. Still a mess to deal with wire management.

It'd be nice if I can use standard USB-C cables plugged into a charging hub to power the whole thing. One I have near my TV has 2.4 amp ports.

Are the outlets horizontally or vertically aligned? The complaint by Marty and others is specifically about horizontally aligned strips since that's what most of us have. And looking at this video that adapter is just as wide as previous Macbook adapters and the same width as a normal plug so it shouldn't obstruct any on a horizontal one.

I'd be kind of surprised if anyone was still using a vertically aligned one these days given how wall warts are even more obstructive on those.

Looks pretty standard to me. Compared to Xiaomi Mibox.

It's surprising that a bunch of gamers have trouble gauging objects in 3D space. Look at the size of the prongs on the two adapters. Prongs are generally the same size so that they fit properly in the outlet. Notice how huge one looks compared to the other? You need to normalize them so that they are the same size. That's the point of reference you use to determine scale and size. So clearly the Mibox adapter is smaller than the Switch adapter.

Overlaying the images in Photoshop makes them look pretty similar in size, perspective aside. I don't think there's a huge difference between the two.

Angles, how do they work? Look at the distance from the edge to the prong between the two and how it relates to the size of the prong, the Switch plug is clearly bigger than the other one. You can't just overlay the two and call it a day.

Yeah dude, I know. I mentioned the perspective in my post, which overlaying the images obviously doesn't account for, but don't let that stop you from being sarcastic. I think the Nintendo one looks wider but not by much. Ultimately we're all just guessing until we have real evidence.

Sorry mate, but even Apple has the same big thing on the wall. It's called USB-C Charger. You can use this for Switch.

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ262LL/A/29w-usb-c-power-adapter?fnode=8b&fs=f%3Dcharger%26fh%3D4595%252B45d4
Difference being that the Apple one comes with a cable you can plug into it so that it will plug into your power strip without the brick blocking another outlet or two on it.

This is how most console power bricks are these days, including the Wii U. Reverting to a wall wart is regressive as fuck.

There's no way it's half the size of the Nvidia adapter.

This is the image of the Switch AC adapter:

nintendo-switch-ac-adaptor-507277.1.jpg

If we use the USB-C plug as a scaling measurement, we can estimate the height at around 2-2.5 times the plug. That would roughly translate to something like 5cm, or just 2 inches of height. That's more than half of what Best Buy measurement. I don't know how large the Nvidia charger you posted, but you relate it to the Best Buy measurement so I just assume that's equal.

Ya, but width is the problem and how it will fit on a horizontal power strip. That's one of the main reasons people are complaining Using the other person's post, look how little room there is on the power strip. Saying it's just a bit wider probably means it no longer fits at that point.

The Best Buy dimensions is meaningless because they're measuring the box. I wasn't comparing the measurements on Best Buy at all. I was using the Nvidia Shield TV adapter as something that is probably close to the Switch's adapter based on pictures and the prong size relation between the two. It would be impossible for it to be half the size of the Nvidia Shield TV adapter.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, from the pics we've seen so far the Switch's AC adapter looks to be almost identical to my Nvidia Shield TV's AC adapter:

And it's size has never been an issue.

Out of the questionable decisions Nintendo has made regarding the Switch, this doesn't really seem like a big deal whatsoever.

My power board has recessed ports. That power brick wouldn't fit without an extension.

My power board also has 2 USB ports with diff power ratings. Hope I can just cut this brick out of the loop.

I've been looking at a lot of USB-C adapters, and a lot of them are designed this way. I suppose that it's one way to make sure that the USB cable being used is up to snuff.

That being said I have a couple of USB-C laptop chargers. Does anyone think using one of those would be an issue. One is for an HP Chromebook 13 and the other is this:
