Nintendo Switch AC adapter is an old-fasioned "wall wart"

Why? They are way more flexible for plugging things in. I'm already plugging over 18 things in. Having to deal with a brick at the outlet fo plug all of those in would be a giant pain in the ass and probably not doable in my setup. In line power bricks are superior.

What kind of giant ass cell phone charger are you using? I haven't had one that big in over a decade.

They aren't superior when they are the size of the Wii U's and make cable management horrible.

I have a tower type power strip so no plug can block any other socket.

Plugged in in portable mode there can be a lot of moving around.
Fair enough. I was assuming connected to the dock but you make a good point with it being directly connected in portable mode.

I've sunk hundreds of dollars into cable management; heck I wrote an official thread on the topic. I find in line bricks way more flexible when arranging power cables because you're not limited to where they can plug into the strip.

Not really. It'll depend of the power charge of your charger.
Do we have the exact information?

Going by past replies it seems you forget that one thing is the power requirements when docked and the power requirements when in portable mode. So if Nintendo allws the use of other chargers maybe a lower capacity one can work for on the go.

Oh, it will work. The problem is, it may not work in the way you expect it. For handheld mode, it'll charge slower and may not even be able to charge it while playing it.
As for dock mode, it may not be enough to power it if it's too low.
A person considering an alternate charger is not doing so for the docked mode, it's more likely for when the device is undocked. The included charger will be left pluged to the cradle.

The power requirements of the device should be substantially less than what the included charger is capable of delivering for obvios reasons... of course im guesing here XD

On topic:

Seems, the reason Nintendo opted to use this design seems to be convenience in the case the user needs this adapter when in portable mode. Faster to unplug from the wall and less cable management.

They use this type of plug because you can bring the plug with you when you like to play outside.

I will personally use Switch as my gaming handheld so this is convenient for me.

Do you miss the days of power bricks that are bigger and heavier than several Switch consoles?

This is a nice solution for your problem. Or any cheap USB C charger, thankfully.

If you use a well designed strip then you aren't limited.

I use these.

There are very unique power strips and surge protects that have already solved the problem in most cases.

That being said I really hope you guys using 3 party stuff check the reviews and ratings on amazon. For some reason many people think they can take shortcuts on making usb c cables and chargers and that can trash your device faster than you can say Garbo.

This guy does a great job and I'm glad he didn't stop when a bad cable fried most of his equipment a while back.

First time I've ever heard to those kind of adapters referred to as wall warts but good to know I'll be needing to do some re-arranging on my already crowded strip.

Is this thread really outraging about an AC adapter?

I don't think it's a "defense force" to simply think the outrage is silly.

What's that? A metamorphic stone rising from the blackness and negative Earth? A towering behemoth of monstrosity brought down by extraterrestrial powers? Or a giant monolith of death, hell-bent on the annihilation of humankind, time, and all matter? No, it's the AC adapter for a ColecoVision.

Quoted for importance. Better safe than sorry with USB-C.

People also shouldn't care about Xbox power brick but MS didn't get a pass. People had been shitting on it for years.

People made a thread to complain about this. Wtf are you talking about?

Everyone needs to complain?

Some people care, some people dont too much.

Nintendo fans being some extra fanboys that let everything pass is a delusion in your own head. As others have pointed out, Nintendo is constantly scrutinized. It's not like the WiiU was a massive success despite it's flaws. Look at all the threads (rightfully) criticizing many of Nintendo's strange Switch decisions. That includes this thread!

On topic, some have mentioned reasons for this design over in line bricks. What are those reasons?

This is just fine right? Or is this another thing people get all up in arms about when in fact it's fuckingnothing.gif

That looks much bigger than the big iPad charger. Looks "off the shelf" too. Doesn't look easy to carry around with you. And looks heavy too. Wii U charger was much better.

I don't care too much about the size and shape, I just want to know the minimum wattage requirement for charging so I can work out if my 29W MacBook charger will be a good solution for both. Also, that one is a USB C cable + brick with USB-C port so it's more versatile than a hard-wired one.

They should make the AC adapter in 5 different colors so people feel like they need to buy all 5 and keep them unopened in the box on their shelf.

Question: I'm buying Switch from France (to Croatia), those two countries should have the same two-point AC adapter/power? Meaning I don't have to worry about extra adapters or anything, just plug and juice? Whoever can answer this, thanks in advance!
Already been answered, but for future reference check this handy guide of Electricity and Plug Types by country:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_electricity_by_country

Croatia and France both use the traditional small plug with round pins, and since the Voltage is the same, you should be able to plug the Switch to the wall right out of the box.

Are people (like op) actually thinking this is the size of the NES/SNES AC adapter, and not the same standard size of a cell phone charger? It's clearly not just based on the size of the box it comes in. Plus all the images of European one where the plug itself is wider than the body of adapter...

My issue with big / heavy US wall warts is that they tend to slip out of the power sockets, imho. - especially when there's no ground.

had to take the Schuko wall wart for reference.

while it's certainly a bit bigger than a phone or tablet charger, it doesn't look particularly big. Certainly smaller than, say, the power brick of a (pre USB-C) macbook.

Okay, so we've covered the reveal, the price, the battery life, the triggers, the lack of 3rd party support, the lack of games in general, the online chat app thing, the accessories, and now the power adapter.... What's left at this point? What haven't we focused in on yet?

Woah woah, a gaming forum discussing all aspects of a new console? Say it ain't so.

Of course they did. Two steps forward, one step back. Classic Nintendo.

The last console I had that had that brick at the end of the chord was the SNES. They should've stayed extinct. I hate those outlet hogs!

They've said jack shit about Virtual Console, Online Account System or anything related to their online store. And the console launches in 4 weeks!

Just to note, this is what Bestbuy.com Website shows about the Nintendo brand Switch AC Adapter physical size. It does not list additional information about the length of cord or other details.

I have a few of these for those big AC adapter to fit my UPS, those big adapter is really annoying.

Good call. I may have to get one or two of those. My powerstrip is pretty crowded. I couldn't fit another brick plug in there and would prefer to not add another power strip tot the wireless behind my tv stand.

Where did you order that one?

How we can get game audio to headphones while docked. Apparently you can plug in, but that's far less than ideal if you're sitting across the room from your tv/docked console.

Will it support bluetooth headsets? USB dongle ones like the Sony Golds? Will the eventual phone app provide game audio to headphones plugged into the phone or just voice chat?

But it's Nintendo, they'll get away with it. Their fans support everything they do.

"Get away with" what? It's a fucking power plug. It's kinda big. Put it in the bottom outlet on the wall or the last one on the strip and you'll be fine. They aren't sneaking into your house and pissing in your hair, for fuck's sake. lol

For anybody considering buying a third party adapter just remember it needs to be compatible with USB PD and have at least 40 watts. Stay away from cheap cables and wall adapters or you could fry your system.

Don't the specs on the back of the Switch state 18-39W? If you're looking for a portable charger, you'd most likely want between 24-39W but probably on the lower side. It's likely that 39W is needed for docked mode given it needs to charge the system while outputting a higher resolution image. That being said, I've had a hard time finding anything that gives more than 12W to a single port. Most "24W" chargers are actually 12W per port. It seems easier to go with a 39W brick, especially if you want to charge multiple devices.

Otherwise, Nintendo might have the best option here.

It's a big charger, but it's not the end of the world. I'll just put it in the end plug on the power bar and call it a day. No big deal.
