PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Right do I need an external hard drive with its own power source or just one that connects via USB?

It's a shame the PS4 doesn't have more than 2 USB slots :(

So what's a good usb 3.0 external?

Also I hope it's just the wording, otherwise it's REALLY lame that only a game screenshot (i'm assuming taken by the system) can be used as a wallpaper.

Load an image into a usb flash drive, open it on the PS4, take a screenshot, use it as wallpaper. Done.

I have a 2TB HDD in my Pro now.

I have a 500GB SSD I could use.

Would I benefit more from putting the SSD internal or just installing games to it via USB 3.0 enclosure?

Wouldn't a hub work?

Besides it being fugly hanging in front of the console.

Do you need a empty external HDD or you can use one with already used (with files...)?
If the internal HDD is anything to go by, it will be formatted and encrypted for use with your PS4 only. So yes, you can use one with files on, but they will be lost.

New stuf from v4.50b2 changelog:

- GIFs and screenshots can be shared on activity screen.
- 250GB is the minimum size of external drive.
- Image quality of PSVR Cinema Mode has been improved.

This update sounds amazing, although one big factor for my liking is whether or not the external drive will be console-specific or not (fwiw, the Xbox One external hard drive support isn't), which is kind of a big deal since it means, for example, I can bring an external HD with me to a friend's house to game on their PS4 without having to download some giant patch because the install on the external will be good-to-go with the patch and DLC.

I'm sure they're going to encrypt this from back to front. But how good the security is... we'll see.

If it's anything like the XBO, you don't need a drive with a PSU.

As for the drive being encrypted, doesn't the XBO system encrypt the partition you allocate to the XBO storage?

Hopefully people can shut up about it now.

Well of course people will be able to stop asking for it now that it is here.

Sorry that people requesting a common sense feature was bothersome.

Now maybe people can stop telling people who have already upgraded their internal drive how easy it is to upgrade.

That said... FINALLY! Thank you Sony.

External HDD support is great. That means I can move my 1 TB external from my Xbox over and just upgrade to a 2 TB on the One since I have a lot more games for it.

Also excited about the custom wallpapers, I always enjoyed that on the PS3.

Finally, Sony gives people the ability to watch 3D movies via a head mounted display

Oh wait:

External Hard drive support is awesome though.

I'm confused. Is the post activity to wall new?

Any time I uploaded a video to YouTube it would post that to what's new which annoyed me greatly because every one would see it. There's no option to delete the post.

Is there a way to upload videos and screen shot but then delete it from the what's new activity feed stopping friends from seeing it?

Would a SSD lose its speed benefits if it were connected through USB? Or is it just a better idea to get the laptop variety and install it into the system directly.

Do we know if we need a HDD with external power source?

If the USB port delivery the required power to external HDD then the answer is no.

If you are thinking to use something like this

(laptop size HDD) then the answer is probable no.

BUT if you thinking in using this kind

full size HDD... then the answer is definitely yes.

But didn't the Wii U struggle with external hard drives that didn't have their own power sources? I guess we won't know for sure with the PS4 options until the feature is released.

I wonder if the external storage content will be readable by other PS4s than the one who created it?

It would be damn useful if you're going to somebody else's place who also owns a PS4 to play some of your own digital content. Of course you would still need to login to your account but it would save the time-consuming step of having to download your games on their PS4.

What future Firmware update threads will look like:

I still want ...

'The 'G's to by slightly curlier
A brightness setting for each individual icon
An alarm clock in my controller
100tf online storage
Name change.

"Encrypted" and "console tied" aren't necessarily the same thing, mind you. The Xbox One's external storage is freely transferrable between systems and hasn't opened up any piracy issues, you still need a disc or account with a license for the games to be usable.

i doubt it. i'm sure once it's formatted then it will be encrypted and keyed to your console. i'd love to be wrong though

Probably be a parody post but: Having unlimited cloud storage for save games (preferably without the PS+ requirement) and being able to change your PSN name would be nice features to have.
