PS4 firmware 4.50 add Boost Mode for PS4 Pro.

I wonder if it might contain a sort of 'mini patch' for a certain selection of games where they tried it and didnt break things. Sort of driver update you often see on PC with game-specific fixes and such.

Could this affect Destiny at all? Pretty sure that is a locked 30 fps but I'm sure it drops with a lot of stuff happening on screen (e.g. Siege Engine).

If it's one thing Destiny does well is a consistent framerate.

In my hundreds of hours playing it I can only remember less than a handful of times frames dropped.

Guys, I remember back when the Pro was still launching people were discussing how some games couldn't take advantage of a possible boost due to how said games had computiational stuff tied to the actual framerate.

Any examples of what games could, in theory, suffer from that?

Well for an IRL example on PC, Dark Souls 1 if you hack it to run above 30fps can get some weird collision detection issues, fall through geometry and stuff like that.

Titanfall 1 had something like shooting or reload rate tied to the framerate, so getting your framerate on PC as high as possible actually gave you an in-game advantage.

A lot of games with framerate locks flat-out aren't tested for situations where the framerate isn't locked.

Dying light runs at an uncapped 60 fps but usually runs at 30. I wonder what this would do for that. Probably would be all over the place I suppose.

WOW

whos trying evil within? please report back

generally how long after beta release does it take to become proper full release??

Ok, firing up Bloodborne to see if the framepacing and loss of framerate [with that accompanying screetching sound effect] in smokey areas is still in.

Instability is basically because the games weren't programmed to work with the additional CUs and increase clockspeed of the CPU.

There were 2 unused CUs in the PS3 as a way of increasing yield. I remember having jailbroken my PS3 in order to use additional CUs in the PS3. If you were lucky then those CUs would work and it really did increase performance in games but introduced instabilities such as freezing and other weird Skyrim like glitches.

Use Beast Mode with caution.
Boost mode may not unlock the extra CUs, but rather only the higher clocks for CPU and GPU. I'm sure they tried a few games and found out what works best.

Oh man I'm hyped like a new game announcement.

It'd be great to play Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 at a more consistent 30fps. (Obviously they're not gonna magically be 60fps)

Also a question to those who try boost mode out, does it increase the fan speed/noise level of the Pro at all? Bc mines completely silent when playing base PS4 games, wondering if this would change anything

I've never ever heard of this. Do you have a source/link for that?

Not noticing any increase in noise so far.

OK this is huge. I need a PS4 Pro ASAP now

Witcher 3 needs checked as well! *curse a perfect game never getting a pro patch*

If you have Chalices unlocked go to a root dept 5 one, if there's witches thats a guaranted huge framedrop.

Also yeah Old Yharnam.

It will probably work like this:

Any game with a locked 30 fps will hold closer to 30 than the normal PS4, any game with locked 60 should hold closer to 60. Any game using a dynamic resolution will probably hold higher to its max resolution and any game with a variable framerate should get higher framerates in general.

Hoping that to be the case too, seems like a fair compromise IMO.

Huh. That could present some issues. Hopefully this will work out for the best, though I can see devs having to patch stuff on their side too (if it can be patched to begin with).

I just went to Forbidden Woods and just walked to the area with lots of fires just after the bridge. Zero framerate drops with that screething stutter sound effects. I'm restarting the game in non-beast mode to just confirm those stutters are still there [I havent played game in ages, maybe it was patched out].

Good time to finally pick up my PS4 Pro now! This is brilliant stuff.
About to get an LG E6 OLED TV too, good timing :).

This mode will not remove framerate caps, like what the post you replied to is talking about from PC.

IIRC they managed to patch that weird ass noise and the game pretty much dropping to 0.
