The hard drive is formatted by and only usable on the PS4. Games stay visible on the system even once the drive has been removed.
It can be moved between and used on several consoles while adhering to the existing content use restrictions, so yeah your account needs to be on it.

Damn that 250GB HDD minimum is a bit of a ball-ache. Wanted to see how games ran off my xtreme memory stick.

So theoretically. I can move all my games to a external hard drive and install a SSD in the Pro. Then plug in the external and just play my games?
No need to go through the whole backing up process.
That's a game changer for me if so...
I haven't tested yet but from what i've read yes you can use on every ps4 that have your account on it.

If you're going to use a 3.5" external hard drive, those draw too much power to run off the USB port.

I don't think that the 3.5" 7200RPM drive can be used without an external power supply.

Has anyone tried a drive that requires external power? Does it actually power down and back up correctly when you use Rest mode?
If the usb power aren's in energy saving mode the hard drive remain powered until you power off the console itself.

If I'm allowed to use an external HDD from now on I will go get one tomorrow. If external HDD support is just going to be taken away in a month (and then have to wait for the official release) I don't have much interest in the beta and will be giving my code way to anyone who is interested

It's just that I've seen some people mention that betas generally last "a month".
Does that mean that the official release is in a month? That after a month I won't be able to give feedback? or that after a month the beta is over and I can't use the features anymore until the oficial release?
1. Is it possible to output a 3D-Bluray-movie to PSVR and to a 3D TV at the same time? Does the breakout box even have enough bandwidth to do that?
2. What about the 7.1 surround sound? PSVR only supports stereo headphones. Is it correctly mixed by the breakout box and its HRTF/binaural magic?

I changed the password on my account as someone ended up changing it twice whilst I was sleeping. Guess the whole thing was trolled. Just letting you know as the #1 account won't work anymore. As mods said do this elsewhere I am not got to be sharing it either for now.
Sorry the fun is over, but a lot of people did get helped. Maybe next time it will go longer! Best advice I have for anyone is see if a friend will let you borrow their account for 5 mins.
The cynic in me would guess some burner troll accounts showed up to ruin the fun for everyone. In saying that tons of junior members were helped with zero issue. For a board of this size things went really well for as long as they did.

I had a suspicion that that rear USB port was going to be perfect for an external drive! I upgraded my internal drive to a 1 TB Crucial SSD. So now I popped the original Toshiba 1 TB stock HDD into a $15 Orico external USB 3.0 enclosure and just like that I have a 2 TB PS4 once firmware 4.50 comes out. Good thing too as Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5 are coming to wipe out the last of my internal space. This is such a great thing for my digital library!

Boost mode is cool. 3D blurays is cool. But external hdd support that works across multiple ps4s has changed my setup for the better..along with being to access cloud saves at the game thumbnail.
Having 2 PS4s with two interrnal 2TB drives seemed like it would be enough. Both of them only had about 300 gigs of space as of last week. Being able to move garbage like Uncharted 4 and storage space pigs like Doom to an external AND seeing that they are accessible, moveable and transferable from one PS4 to the other is incredible. Dont have to redownload something like a GTA5 if I have the itch to play it in the living room.
