Square Enix's silence about the PC version of Nier Automata

Man, if there's no news and it was still a general 2017 release, then it can appear any time after the PS4 release. I'm pretty sure it'll come to PC, just not that soon.

Why though? Marketing is an effective tool for every market, why not spend some amount of money to make sure that the audience knows the game is coming out?

Who knows? It seems to be common though. My best guess is that there is still some distrust for the platform. Maybe they feel like the core fanbase is going to be aware regardless and by not shouting from the rooftops, the game won't get pirated as quickly.

Not saying I agree with that logic, piracy on PC has been a fairly minor issue for a while now. Probably fewer "lost sales" to that than from used games on consoles.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stealth release this game like the ff games they released on steam.

At least SE is releasing the games unlike SEGA....

Don't know why people are assuming a deals in place, if it was Sony would be touting 'Timed Exclusive' plus the fact that Sony aren't majorly pushing it.

I think the PC version is taking longer than expected, and people's expectation was day and date with the PS4 version so after realising they weren't going to hit it they decided to stay quiet. If they had a solid date in mind we would have already heard, I guarantee it.
Hey, let's not get logic get in the way of hysteria. Also as the comments above said: "What marketing?" indeed.

Remember, this is the company that released Dragon Quest Heroes marketed as a PS4 exclusive, then like a day after it came out, they announced a PC version to be released within a manner of weeks.

Getting similar vibes for Nier here.

If it's the result of Sony exclusive marketing fuckery, I'm gonna flip. The game has gone gold for fuck sake.

Then again, Square are just above the shit tier when it comes to Japanese publishers on the PC.

Like i said before. Imo. they have a deal with Sony. They want to sell that expensive Collectors Edition of the game and pre-orders. (PC will be digital only i guess).
It really sucks that they are silent about it, since game was announced to be released on the same day as PS4 version and then suddenly this happened. But it's SE... i am not surprised.

They will release it 2 or 3 months after the PS4 version, that's my guess.

I'm perfectly fine with a delayed PC release. It just means more people will double dip and/or less people waiting for a "$5 steam sale". More sales, the better, especially on console.

When a developer goes from this to tweeting "ask Square-Enix" as the only reply to questions about a PC version the idea that a deal is in place doesn't seem far-fetched at all.

It's true. That's just the kind of thing you say when you know you'll get in trouble for saying anything else. "Ask your mother."

...when a developer announces a port of a game over a year after the announcement of the title with no indication of which company is making the port and no footage of the port, you think that's good reason to believe that there's some marketing deal going on? Why?

Maybe you have some insider information or maybe Sony has a history of doing this that I'm unaware of and that you know about. Then again, you'd have to convincingly argue why Sony would choose to have a marketing deal for this game and not the large number of other Japanese PS4/PC games like various Namco and Tecmo Koei games.

Not like there are any good reasons to think that the problem might be with Square or Platinum. Square was able to get its largest Japanese release last year up and running on PC and released that version day and date with the console versions. Platinum certainly wasn't devoting most of their resources to another major project or anything.

Nah, it's probably some marketing deal that you have no basis to believe exists.

After first Nier Automata not mentionned PC, I said it was the PSX version of the trailer and there was nothing to worry about. Duckroll asked if it was okay to ban me if it was delayed. I said don't worry, you can if it's delayed by more than one month, as long as the delay after that month. Basically, I'm now hoping it's not delayed more than a month... and not cancelled :")

I hope the one month countdown starts from Japanes release and not EU release :D

yep.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just only started porting to PC.

Well, explanation is simple. They said "ask Square-Enix" because it's additional work, so obviously it's SE who decides if they need to spend additional money on that. Or you suggest that Platinum will do port for free? NieR:Automata was started as PS4 project, so I guess PC port wasn't covered by budget at the beginning.

I really doubt there is some marketing deal.

I see many ppl mentioning "port" here when talking about the PC version.

The video is about Yoko Taro, Square-Enix employee. Not PG employee.
NieR Automata started on PC though:

You just announced a PC release for NieR: Automata. Was it always planned, or it’s a recent decision?

Yosuke Saito: We were considering the Steam release from the start of the project. We did announce it at a later date, but we had it in mind from the starts. PlatinumGames will be developing that as well, so you don’t have to worry about the quality of the game.

What a stupid thing to say. It's so sad that you want to see papa Sony making "big bank" on the PS4 ver while the PC will flop due to "$5 Steam sales". Pathetic.

Why on earth would Sony spend significant cash on neir 2. This is probably just SE PC game fuckery. It will come out on PC eventually.

PC version of the game is not the port. They are porting to PS4.

Exactly. Let me post a quote from another thread:

Saito already confirmed that the PC is the leading platform during development and the game is then ported and optimised separately for PS4.

"We actually start creating our games now on high-spec PCs and then optimize for the different consoles we release on."

I would understand delaying a game that's been designed with the PS4 hardware in mind, but that doesn't appear to be the case here. In addition, the lack of the Steam logo on their main website as well as the absence of any mention of the PC release in the EU press release is highly suspicious.

I for one and going off a cliff and hoping the delay is to announce simultaneous XB1 and PC release.

sure, porting is just copy&paste /s

Well, back in the day I used to convert gifs to jpgs using a file called GIF2JPG.EXE. I'm pretty sure tech has improved and there's a PS42PC.EXE that works in a similar fashion.

Anyways I really think the PC Version is not ready, so they decided to delay the game.

Now as a publisher if there game is currently releasing only on PS 4 for the time being, they will promote it that way to maximize the sale on that platform because obviously for any publisher would want to maximize the revenue during the time of release.

Once they get the pc versoin , they will promote on PC

It doesn't really say which one is the base. Just that they started development at the same time.

This one says so though:
So, I think this isn't just our company - I think a lot of other companies also do it - but we actually start creating our games now on high-spec PCs and then optimize for the different consoles we release on. Since we already thought about releasing on Steam from the get-go, we'd already built the game in such a way that it would play on PC.

This is what SE said about the game in an official press release for the demo version:

This title will be available for the PlayStation®4 system on March 7, 2017 in North America for $59.99 and Steam® in early 2017.

Who knows what they mean by "early 2017" though.

If the PC version was planned since the beginning it is easier for it to be the base version and then port to other platforms, especially since they have to target both PS4 and PS4 Pro and they haven't discarded a Xbox ONE version.

SE just treats PC badly. There is not a lot more to it. I do not think any of it is intentional, they just don't really work well in the space. At least they recognize that it exists, which is more than I can say for other Japanese developers.

It does not matter were the base was. It was created as a ps4 release and that matters more then a PC release to SE. That is why the ps4 version is releasing first. The PC version will come out don't worry.

If Square was able to get some people to triple dip on FFX HD, I imagine they are thinking they can get some to double dip for this game even though it isn't a mainstream series for them
