Nintendo announces Zelda: Breath of the Wild season pass, $20, contents detailed

Which part of the Zelda season pass are you most excited for?

Definitely changes a lot of things indeed. Nintendo still locking out a damn difficulty mode behind a 20 bucks season pass. A new story and a dungeon for 20 bucks. Just Wow.
To think that for 20 bucks, some other publishers bring a new region, with a new additionnal story.

We don't know if there will be a new region or not yet...

As usual, GAF is jumping to conclusions. Original story could be a couple hours long, or maybe 20 hours long. If you don't feel comfortable buying the DLC without all the info then wait until we actually have info!

Nintendo has a pretty good track record with DLC value.

Personally. I dont think hard mode being out is a big deal. Only 3 zelda games have had hardmode in the base game. For the other 3 you had to buy the remake.

That being said, I hope this hard mode is something else than just 2x damage no hearth drops. 2x damage is an awful "hard mode", it makes the start of the game harder bur the rest of the game is almost the same.

When a single-player game like this has a season pass I usually wait for a physical release of the complete package. I always think might as well experience everything in one go.

I'm getting the Wii U version at launch regardless though. I have time to see if I'll bother getting the pass for that version or get a complete Switch version (or at least a budget switch copy plus season pass) in the future.

The season pass honestly seems kind of weak for the price.

Nintendo has never released a complete edition of a game within the same generation before.

You can tell who didn't bother with the Wii U and 3ds from reactions. Or likely didn't. Nintendo and DLC and Season passes aren't new. They did it for Mario Kart 8, Smash, Fire Emblem, Hyrule Warriors, and Pikmen 3 (their first game with dlc). Could be forgetting some. All were pretty significant but the games were already packed with content. So we aren't going to be taken advantage of here. Of that I'm certain. Going to judge Nintendo on past efforts until shown otherwise.

Their first games with paid DLC were NSMB2 and Fire Emblem Awakening in 2012.

I don't think people are ignorant to Nintendo's DLC practices, it's what they put behind a paywall that has us scratching our heads a little.

Like what they added with DLC with Amibo's, adding 200cc with paid dlc, and now a new difficulty in Zelda.

Difficulty changes should be updates to the game not something behind a paywall regardless of how cheap the season pass is.

Also like I posted earlier, unless debunked kotaku has stated you can not purchase any of these separate.

EDIT: Corrected 200cc was an update not paid DLC. Thanks for clarification DooMage :)

Hmmmmm... I don't actually mind this. I'll probably buy the pass at a later point, but it seems like the content they're offering is pretty good.

Glad I didn't buy any of the special editions though.

DLC for Zelda is exactly what I expected and I even posted about it earlier in the year.

I'm pretty surprised how much gaf was out to lunch on this one. It's a pretty clear decision to make when you spend all those years creating a game like this and need to release as much quality software as possible to support the console. This is Nintendo's Skyrim or Witcher 3.

I can cope with the second part but not the other bits. I'll probably hold fire till I know what exactly I'm getting, even if I pay more overall.

I think that's totally fair. Looks like the meat ie. the actual story expansion is fully in pack 2 so I could see people just grabbing that for say £12. A story expansion, a horde survival thing and a bunch of bits and bobs for £18 is pretty decent to me though. I hope the handy items on the great plateau doesn't unbalance the game though.

People either can't read or enjoy making assumptions.

"New hard mode"

"New"

Yeah, they've usually specified a "double damage" mode as "Hero Mode" in past games, so this is probably something different and has to do with the game's additional mechanics.

But whatever, even though I don't like the idea of season passes myself, the overreactions must surge onward.

Well if they are adding thing's they need to disclose it now since the game releases in 2.5 weeks.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Remember when people were mad that they had to buy the Wolf Amiibo for TP HD and would rather have Nintendo selling them the extra content directly ?

Well....

If you are on the fence about this, just don't preorder. You will just miss out on the shirt and treasure. Just hold off until they announce more info.

Awful to hear. But hardly a surprise. They put significant Smash and Mario Kart stuff behind DLC, and had a ton of stuff for Fire Emblem.

While I'm sad to hear that there's DLC at all, at least it sounds like pretty good DLC. I'll probably check out the new dungeon/story part on Youtube.

As me and other people said before, 200cc was free for everyone.

"New Story" it says.
As far as I know there already is a story in the base game so it must be a new story.

"New" Hard mode it says.
As far as I know...

Don't really like seeing hard mode as part of this expansion pass, but I'll have to wait and see how I feel about the main game before really considering any purchase of future content.

Well, that goes without saying, really. If I'm supposed to pay for this, you are better changing more than a handful of variables.

They're not being sold separately. If you want the new dungeon and story then you have to waste your money on the hard mode and cave of trials.

200cc was a free update

Extra content is fine. Difficulty modes behind a paywall just looks cheap and it's so unnecessary. Anyone who is going to play the game on a harder difficulty is most likely going to be willing to pay to get new content, so why lose the good will?

Sure, but they also did it for Mario golf world tour, which was gutted and useless without the DLC.

The dlc for smash, fire emblem, Hyrule warriors... All way overpriced for what it was. I either felt ripped off after buying it or like I was missing out by not having it. I was really hoping Zelda would be an exception here. Mario kart is the one time they got it right, imo. Announced well after launch and with a good value proposition.

The value proposition here looks awful.

I'm actually shocked there is DLC, I shouldn't be but I am nonetheless. Nintendo usually releases very good DLC packages. I'll wait till I know more about it later this year but if the extra story is beefy enough (A few hours or longer) count me in.

$5 they will release a special "holiday" edition of the game containing all the DLC to help push sales in the fall. Book it.

Blech. I won't get it. Maybe off in the future a good bit after I've beaten the game, but only if the content turns out to be especially good and worth the added cost + going on sale or something. And I only say that because the series is one of my favourites, if not my favourite.

I have yet to pay for any DLC, and I have an eye to keep it that way, so you'll have to convince me pretty well Nintendo.

This is not bad news, but I think it would have been better received if they announced after launch. By the time the second DLC pack comes out people will be ready to play new content.

Yeah, it seems it would have been ideal as an E3 announcement. Nintendo's marketing is just insane in general - there's all sorts of questions surrounding the Switch and instead of making some attempt to clarify them, they announce an expansion pass for Zelda.

Nintendo's past DLC has usually been pretty good. So I'm hopeful that they will go all out with that 2nd dungeon and other features in the second expansion.

The second pack looks good, the first one is ugh...paying for a new difficulty mode and some trials. Yeah, no. Hopefully you can buy them separately.

Books and video games are completely different lol. I don't mind DLC at all.
I kinda disagree. A book and Visual Novel can almost be the same.
Of course it's different, but I'm not really comparing both, I'm saying I like to have something that feels finished from A to Z.
Adding stuff makes it feel more like an online experience with updates all the time.
Some people just don't like it. As a piece of art, it feels less impressive.
I'm not asking anyone not to buy DLC, just explaining my feeling ^^.

I prefer to see video games as art, more than just a basic entertaining product, that may be one of the reason.

Well if they are adding thing's they need to disclose it now since the game releases in 2.5 weeks.

But the DLC isn't releasing till the summer and winter. People don't need to buy it until then (if they want the DLC). The chests are a nice bonus if you want to get it right away (like I'm sure I will) but the fact that the descriptions are so vague tells me they have barely started, and we'll get more details as development progresses.

Didn't happen for MK8 or Smash

Probably not going to happen to Zelda

I hope some gaming news site asks Aonuma if there's a standard hard mode in the game and the new hard mode is just an extra.

You dont need to pay for the pack now - they are still working on the additional content. Why would they have to disclose the shit months before the content is out ? Its not like you can get it somehow cheaper buy buying the DLC pack on week 1 compared to buying it in Fall when everything has been released.

Most people will just buy BotW - play the game for dozen of hours and decide down the line if they are ready to spend that extra cash for additional content for the game.

Wait 200cc was DLC? WTF. I remember unlocking higher CC in double dash by just playing it, guess those days are long gone.

The funniest thing about this is not just the misunderstanding that all DLC must equal paid content, it's the implication that Double Dash even has 200CC to unlock just by playing in the first place.
