That's why I was confused! Thank you. (I edited my post with my confusion before I saw your reply.) Do we know how big it is, though?

Surely there will be room for both it and BOTW?

whatever size the day 1 patch is, it will mostly replace data that's already being used up by the OS, it won't add much additional storage usage

But most games won't do that anyway, and if they do they'll have it even if there are achievements. It's literally a choice between the meaningless achievement or nothing at all. So why wish for it to be taken away from the people who do lie it? What's the harm?

That's not true. Basically every Nintendo game has that.

If you've read any of my comments, you'd understand that I don't wish for something to be taken away. But I do absolutely think it's rather lazy when game designers offload "achievements" to a global notification system rather than building something into the game that adds depth through actual achievement. Something that has been a part of game design since the NES.

Looks a little plain and identity less, kinda standard modern block based menus.
It did look very snappy though, which is good.
Hopefully it's still as snappy when the console launches and the online parts are up, well the parts that are ready at launch that is.

MyNintendo is achievements done right. I just find it odd that grown men need to impress other men over the Internet with trophies. Unless you're into that.

1. Assuming everyone who enjoys achievements are men
2. Assuming everyone who enjoys achievements are *adult* men
3. Assuming that the acquisition of said achievements is solely for impressing others

I agree, Nintendo games do have that. Are you implying they would take that away if there achievements?

I can't think of a single game where the developers chose to add achievements instead of additional content and rewards.

I like the UI more than the Wii/Wii U era stuff. Felt too bubbly... although having the channel system was pretty clever.

Instructions are so good. I love the pictures and legends. Clear and inviting.

Eh? You never had it on Nintendo systems.

You're arguing that Nintendo should spend money to implement something on their system, we're not arguing for it to be taken away from you just that you should chill about it not being there.

I'm hoping there will be an option to shrink those game-tiles, a bit like on the 3DS, so once I have a few downloaded games I can have everything available on one screen without having to scroll.

What would you want instead? I mean, I personally don't want anything too nuts. Functionality over style, imo. I think they achieved a great balance.

It's been standard for every piece of hardware for 2 generations even the vita and phones.

You're correct, and everyone(including myself) should probably chill out a bit about this. But there's a lot of people here celebrating the lack of options, and that just seems like a weird position to take.

I still hope Nintendo changes their stance on Miiverse. Come on.. I understand if they would remove it to replace it with something better.. but to take it away? Why? I don't want to post on social networks filled with politics, fake news, and other crap. I want to post in specific communities for obscure VC releases.

How much would it honestly cost to implement an achievement system? I don't bother with achievements but I'm curious.

This video is almost worthless, it looks like it was recorded on a 3ds and it just shows the stuff in portable mode?

Why not use your cellphone to record in a higher resolution then like 144p and hook it up to the dock so you can see the ui on a big screen?

Does he just work at some retail store and stole half of his preordered switch out of the backroom or something?

that is really difficult thing to surmise without working for nintendo but its safe to assume that it would not be trivial. it's not rocket science but doing anything well with software takes time and money

The video is 1080p, what are you talking about

Dude we owe this guy nothing, be thankful.

Of course dude. Zelda is 13 GB. It isn't going to be more than that.

This video just proves that Nintendo didn't make a video because there's nothing to see.

Baked in software like Pictochat or Streetpass, I.e. things inherit to the console at purchase. You're referencing apps, excluding the Browser mention. I get you wanted to make the joke, just saying it wasn't really relevant in regards to what I was implying. I should've made that clearer.

oh yeah, im totally with you.

Agreed! This was a big part of the appeal for me. Being able to post directly to a VC community with a screenshot and a request for help was great.

Thanks. That's a relief. I just don't know much about this sort of thing and wasn't sure if somehow an update could take up more than 12~ GB (since I think I read the available storage is 25 and as you said Zelda is 13).

As to Nintendo not making a video - I agree, and I think unfortunately the fact that Switch is out there to press (I know this vid isn't from a journalist but there's a thread about press getting systems) with no indication of VC makes me think no VC will be present day one.

Video is in HD tho...

Either fix your eyesight or your internet connection.

And your attitude while you're at it.

HYPE AF. Glad it doesn't have shitty Wii home screen music.
I'm surprised the white theme looks better than black

Looks 1080 to me.

that's a pretty big caveat to your statement imo
I don't think there's anything unreasonable about wanting Nintendo to do something that competitors have been doing for generations now. They've never had a dedicated share button before, either, but it's something they took from a competitor that's going to be a big positive for the people who use it.

Do you have a source for that? I don't think we're getting achievements but I also can't disprove it.

It's just that the system as it is seems more like a way to promote the mobile games and ensure they are being played than anything else. At the very least I don't expect missions and coins to be obtainable from switch games.
They even each have their own coins rather than a single one for all of them. The website isn't even designed to list many types of missions or coins, so if each nintendo game has them it'll quickly be a clusterfuck.

Also for now the website lists only that you can get coins by playing games on smart devices or buying console games.

Maybe they'll simply list achievements/stamps in a separate list (that would honestly serve no purpose given the nature of the website) but I think we can forget coins.

There are a lot of games with meaningless trophies.

LOL. Speaking of worthless...
