Who knows. He could turn things around. We've seen it before with guys like Z-Bo. I mean, for the record, we are talking about a guy who is averaging 24/11 and a 25 PER "turning it around". LIke I said, i'm not 100% sold either way. Maybe DMC is just a head case. But the Peilcans are giving up next to nothing to find out. It's well worth the risk and the Kings are stupid for how they've handled this. The fact that they got so little for his perceived value is just a testament to how terribly they've mismanaged things since the minute they drafted him. This is 100% on the Kings and their garbage ass owner.

Turning around what he has grown up on is going to be one hell of a hard miracle. They may can make it work out though and winning may just make him get a few less T's or something. it's hard to judge that's for sure

He's also 26. He's just entering his prime and joining a new team at the same time which is a couple years before both Sheed and Z-Bo doing the same thing in the middle of their primes.

For those who don't know Okafor advance stats among other things paint Okafor as one of if not the worst center in the game. That should tell you how bad this Cousins trade is.
Or how bad the sixers are. They'll have trouble convincing anyone on Okafor unless he decides to step up on D and rebounding. Even with the best of efforts on his part, that's 3 years away and no one wants to stop embiid from progressing. We'll see what they get for him.

Next level tanking strategies.
Can't even tank because they don't have a pick
Bring Paul George over in the summer and that team is a Championship contender.
Woof that's a team in 2K fantasy draft with a legends roster and you just draft these peeps over Mitch Richmond, Alonzo Mourning, and Ewing because they better
Kings fans don't deserve this :(
Oh yes they do, trash as FO that rivals the Magic for being inept

LOL ESPN made a FAQ article for this monstrocity:

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/18723235/nba-explaining-demarcus-cousins-deal

Q: Why did the Kings do this trade now?

A: The new CBA changed things and created a new and accelerated timeline for the Kings. There's now a rule that allows players to extend their contracts up to five years one year before they become free agents. Cousins is one of those players. So while he is not a free agent until 2018, the Kings suddenly had a massive free agent decision coming this July.

Q: Why was it massive?

A: Cousins is one of the few players eligible for what's called a Designated Player Extension, DPE for short. That means he could've signed a five-year, $209 million extension this summer and added that to the one year left on his contract that would've locked him in through 2023. It would've been the largest contract in NBA history. Also, once a player signs a DPE, he can't be traded for a year, which further narrowed the options the Kings had.

It's a big decision for a player with a checkered history to say the least. Clearly the Kings decided they weren't willing to make the commitment. The irony is this rule was created to keep stars stay put with their teams. But its first application squeezed a team into trading a franchise player.

Q: So Cousins won't re-sign with the Pelicans?

A: That's a question for another day. He can still sign a five-year extension this summer, for about $180 million, but he has limited incentive to do so. The real motivation was to re-sign in Sacramento. But he's under contract for next season, so the Pelicans have time to work it out.

Q: Was this the best deal the Kings could get?

A: That will be debated for a long time. The Kings have been offered numerous better deals for Cousins over the last several years than the one they took. Only the Kings truly know what the other offers were. It is clear they prioritized young prospects and draft picks and not established players. Not every team had that type of package to offer. The Lakers, for example, were a bidder. But they couldn't trade their pick this season because it belongs to the Philadelphia 76ers, unless it's in the top three picks. It is fair to guess that many teams that could've made better offers didn't, which is a commentary on what Cousins' reputation is in the league.

Q: Why did New Orleans make this move?

A: General manager Dell Demps is on the hot seat with the team in danger of missing the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since Anthony Davis signed a contract extension. He prioritized getting a center so Davis could play more at power forward. The Pelicans were close on trading for Jahlil Okafor and were willing to trade a first-round pick for him, but they couldn't come to terms with Philadelphia. Cousins represents a gamble for sure, but the Pelicans were able to buy low, especially since they were able to not have to trade point guard Jrue Holiday in the deal. Holiday is a free agent after the season, but New Orleans has now assembled a star core that has potential to be part of a strong team.

So who do the Pelicans need next? Any notable upcoming free agents that the pelicans could sign? Feeling kinda stoked to see how it'll work out.

Also had a friend tell me, We're rebuilding, this trade will work out 2-3 years later and All I could say, was Dawg, imma pray for y'all Kings fans. lol. Praying that Someway, Somehow, Kings gonna transform Buddy into a franchise playa. lol.

I still don't know why people outside of Oakland and Cleveland care about the NBA this season. Parity has gotten worse and worse due to these punk ass superstars teaming up.

Nah... Superteams have always existed. Or do you think the Showtime Lakers/Bird-led Celtics/etc just had a bunch of scrubs around their stars? As if MJ didn't have a Scottie and then a all-time great rebounder/defender in Rodman. C'mon...

In actuality, the league has never been better and more talented as a whole than it is right now. Pretty much every single team, except maybe the Nets, Magic and now the Kings have some exciting potential star as a pillar. Look at Giannas in Milwaukee, KAT/Wiggins in Minnesota, Jokic in Denver, Porzingis in NY, and the list goes on. And that's not even considering the talent in this upcoming draft and the one after that. The NBA is on an ascendancy and an entertaining product regardless of being a Cavs/Dubs fan.

Not to mention those damn Spurs cheating by cleaning up the leftovers for another 55+ win season.

Sure. But the core was mostly maxed at 2 superstars.

Bird/McHale
Magic/Kareem
Pippen/Jordan
Thomas/Dumars

Now we have
James/Irving/Love
Durant/Klay/Steph/Draymond

The Spurs are interesting since their big three developed dynamically, peaking with Duncan's dominance then slow decline, while Parker developed on the back end of Duncan's diminished dominance and Manu being a solid off the bench sparkplug.

what does that have to do with this thread? AD and Boogie weren't pushing for this trade

Hell Boogie didn't even want to be traded, and was re-assured he wouldn't be traded an hour earlier.

A lot of shooting. Find a way to trade get Hill's and Asik's contracts off the books, get some shooting. Trade Terrence Jones for a shooter.
Re-sign Holiday this offseason and try and make a run next year.

Would've been nice for Sac to get a nice core and build up. Now they're back to square one while a great player joins another great player.

Although I can't hate too much. NO hasn't seen much revelance either.

I know it's a trade as well. I also know that Cousins didn't ask to go there. Just lamenting the fact. Not a Sac fan but I've felt for the franchise.

'POP KEEPS CHEATING'

'How?'

'...he keeps resting his players at key moments to make sure they can gear up for a playoff run!'

'...'
Not to mention finding players who fit pre-existing roles rather than trying to smash together a lineup! Yet he keeps getting away with it!

Was it?

Celtics ran the decade with Bird/Parish/McHale as their core.

The 1982 Lakers and 1986 Celtics came off winning the NBA Championship to claim the potentially best player in the draft. The Lakers also had this guy who won DPOY. And before Worthy they had Jamaal Wilkes in the role. And Norm Nixon playing point. Both of whom were multi-time all-stars.

The Bad Boy Pistons were stacked like the 2004 Pistons, above average everywhere, with a deep bench.

Pippen and Jordan always had Grant or Kukoc/Rodman too. Draymond and Iguodala aren't huge leaps over that kind of help.

Good points. Although I was talking more about alpha dogs than supporting players. Worthy and Parish we're amazing, so we agree there.

I would agree that all those team were very deep.

I dunno, Cousins seems destined to bounce around the league. You can't build an elite team around a big that doesn't play defense. Hopefully he can be influenced by coaches and fellow players, he certainty has the physical ability.

Still, he's a double team on offense and you have to respect his scoring ability. Kings should have got a little more, but they clearly wanted no part of a long term contract with him, which I suspect will be the case everywhere he goes. He should go to the Knicks. Him and Mello deserve each other.

Funny enough, the Celtics big three came together when landed the number one pick (despite being a 61 win team) which they dealt for Parish and McHale to join Bird (and Finals MVP Cedric Maxwell).

The Cavaliers sent two number one picks (Wiggins and the admittingly poor Bennett) and their 2015 first rounder for Love.

Red Auerbach's trade for Parish and McHale for Joe Barry Carroll and Ricky-whatshisname is for the longest time (and probably still is) the most lopsided trade in NBA history. Smooth moves there, Golden State.

I think this might be a trade that makes both teams worse. I don't like Cousins on the Pelicans, but the Kings got almost nothing back for him.
