I think the press only got the game and units last week.

GameXplain JUST got their units and Zelda today:

i think uncharted 4 suffers from poor pacing and a huge story retcon that people didn't really consider when reviewing because the game is overwhelming in how aesthetically impressive it is. gorgeous visuals, excellent sound, wonderful acting and direction... those things ARE amazing. the gameplay and story pacing are not, and i think that when looked back upon the reception will be lower.

not talking bioshock infinite levels of "come to think of it..." but i don't think it will be remembered as fondly as uc2 for example. guess we'll have to see :P

Whatever makes you sleep at night....reviewers were not blinded by anything, it's ok, Zelda will be great no need to try and tear down another game.

I seriously hope reviewers don't get go down that route. It would be incredibly childish if they dock it down if Zelda is not playable.

Outside of Gaf I dont think many people care about that topic.

My biggest fear is, that the Overworld is not really filled with exciting stuff and that the shrines get boring really quick.
What I still expect is a polished game like no other Open World game before (except maybe W3 and HZD). Where so many physics would kill other games because they qould destroy the balance in the game and make it feel broken this will still feel incredible good when you play it.

Since OOT/MM I've been waiting for an open world Zelda. As a result WW, TP and SS while amazing still disappointed.

Whatever the score, this is my dream game.

it's a piece of art, it can be critiqued however they feel like it, and when we move past game reviews as a checklist and more into what they say, what they mean, how they make you feel etc... games will be better off.

It's why I always appreciate reviewers who don't do scores. People have a harder time trying to use them to try and invalidate someone elses purchases.

Really starting to get excited for Zelda and Switch. Only really getting a Switch to experience the best version of Zelda so will be bummed if it turns out the Wii U version somehow runs better. I'm playing Majora's Mask for the first time on 3DS in anticipation of Breath of the Wild.

Seems odd for a big Nintendo game to have the embargo lift a day before launch. They're usually pretty early. Although I guess reviewers will be playing the switch version which they won't have been able to get out to everyone as early.

I think that gaming journalism has evolved for the better over the last few years. It is indeed far more difficult for a title to reach 90+ Metacritic nowadays, but when a game DOES reach that milestone, you can be absolutely sure that it's an amazing experience. Examples over the last few years are The Witcher 3 (92), Bloodborne (92), Uncharted 4 (93), and Overwatch (90). I expect and hope that BotW will be the next title to top 90.
Agree, the days of GTA4 and Bioshock: Infinite hype driven bullshit is over and thank god. Does make me wonder what exactly caused this shift in crticism? Anyway, I hope reviewers go into BOTW guns blazing, critique every aspect of it, to see if it's worthy of the Zelda legacy. I can't remember the last time I was this excited for a game, so do it right reviewers.

How interesting how your tone is so different then what you were doing in the horizon thread lol. Nintendo fan, should have known.

Predicting a low metascore for Zelda compared to the other games in the series. This because:

- metascores are all going down a little bit
- this game will be compared to other open world games (probably without much sense)
- there is a chance that this game will be divisive
- I bet some reviewers feel like journalism gave to many 10's to Skyward Sword so they don't want to risk being seen as fanboys or something

When the hell are we getting a Direct for the online system and Virtual Console?
Journalists will probably have access to the eshop if they're to review Snipperclips early, no idea when the embargo lifts for that. We could get the answer to virtual console fairly soon.

I'm not gonna bother reading the Zelda reviews or previews. I've avoided a lot of gameplay footage of the game (wish more tbh) as i want to experience it first hand.

Review scores aren't the be all and end all, and I've never been a fan of metacritic tbh. All i know is that I'll be playing Zelda next week regardless of the MC.

So if the previews are on the 23rd does that mean the media can show off the Switch?? Like the UI and even the eshop?

Would that mean we could get a Direct right before the 23rd or a YouTube video going over eshop stuff?

So I am a fan despite me wanting the reviewers to be as harsh to it as possible? Sure I'm hyped for it, but I'm not blind to the possibility that it might suck. I may be a fan, but I'm not a fanboy.

So Zelda's score will be based on 3 scales and vary site by site:

  1. game is reviewed as a standard AAA game and compared to other AAA games.
  2. game is reviewed as a open world RPG and compared to other RPG's.
  3. game is reviewed as a Zelda game and scored based off how it fairs compared to other games in the series.
I cannot wait for the review thread.

Nintendo embargoes are pretty strict and sometimes silly, they might have asked press not to show elements such as the eshop. I remember I wasn't allowed to show Rosalina in Super Mario 3D World even though they had revealed her in a Direct.
