So it could still be somewhat tricky. Unless they revamped it without motion controls, but that'd be a haul right there and would change a lot of the game. Though it'd be possible, and the game would still be awesome. And maybe more people could appreciate it that way.

I'd still want motion controls though as I find the combat and aiming to be super fun, but I would take an HD remaster in just about any form.
Skyward Sword used gyro for aiming and not the IR pointer, so that's not an issue.

I've only played the 3D ones, but I've always felt similarly. I have my favorites of course, but can't say I've ever despised any of them, or felt that the quality wasn't up to snuff.

While Skyward Sword overall wasn't for me (it did still have some great individual parts though), I would agree that there hasn't yet been a "bad" Zelda game.

Some games in the series have downright surprised me too. I only recently played Minish Cap, and it's now in my top three list of favorite Zelda games. I've always been partial to the franchise's 2D entries, but I have a feeling BotW may just end up becoming my favorite Zelda title thus far.

My hope is that we don't have to wait another six years for the next mainline entry. I'd love to see Nintendo re-use the engine and employ the same art style in a 2020 title.

I'd be down for a Skyward Sword HD with refined tech, proper day night cycle and maybe extra stuff that didn't make the cut back then.

Would be grear as a filler for BotW2.

What about predicting how the other games will review, 'cause we all know Zelda will be a hit and all that.

I'd say that 1-2 Switch will score an awful ~55 and Bomberman R a decent 76.

I have a feeling 1-2 Switch will have a higher review mark. Game looks fun and easily accessible...Price is horrible.

Argghhh that means in 3 days I can't surf around anymore, BotW spoils will be all over the place. Especially YouTube.

Cause expecting any game to be that good only sets yourself up for disappointment.

Well also, people are real picky when it comes to their Zelda. It could definitely be the best for some, and nowhere near the best for others. For example some people prefer the tightly designed and paced structure of the overhead installments like Link's Awakening, which is a perfectly understandable and valid opinion. I can see some people saying, well Breath was great, but I still miss the more focused design of the 2D ones.

On the other hand, some people will love this mostly just because it's a gigantic open world and won't be as critical if certain elements from other games aren't there or handled as well. It's not going to have that density per individual screen you find in the older ones because there are no individual screens that have their own set of enemies, secrets, etc.

Breath will still likely have tons of secrets and such, but it's not going to be as compact. Hell, Skyward Sword had sectioned-off areas with secrets and exploration yet some people claim it didn't have exploration. Opinions just vary wildly with this series and I guess I'm just trying to say that like usual there's going to be folks in both camps. Some will think this is the best or one of the best, others may yearn for the compact 2D overhead style.

What worries me most about BotW are the performance issues. I played in Chicago yesterday and it was pretty noticeable, even to me who never really notices... I mean I think Bloodborne runs fine.

Most of the optimization should come at the end. I don't recall hearing the playable version as being a finalized retail copy. But yeah, I've heard about the performance issues enough by now to be concerned.

I've seen it as well, though I'm wondering how much of it is chalked to it being able to mark off "open world" on the modern gamer's interest checklist as well as it being potentially anecdotal.

Andre Segers from GameXplain posted this

I'm happy for them.

But please, don't do this YouTube crap.

I sure hope so! I don't have a link or source, but I remember someone mentioning that a recent video looked a bit smoother.

Regardless, I had so much fun doing absolutely nothing. It was truly amazing.

Breath of the Wild is a pretty different Zelda game, so scores can go either way, probably the first time I wouldn't make a bet for a very high metacritic Zelda score. Still, it's everything I ever wanted (or seems to be) in a Zelda game. I am way too hyped.

did you play docked or handheld?

I played docked with the Pro Controller for around 17 minutes and then pulled the system out of the dock and played handheld.

I can confirm that it looked like all framerate issues completely disappeared when I played unlocked.

I can't say which I prefer yet, but I had an absolute blast. I can see myself being pretty evenly split with playing through the dock and on the TV. Especially on the weekend - I'll leave it by my bed and play there so I don't have to wake my dogs up and have them jump all over me haha.

I'm actually typing up a fun little play-by-play of my time spent - I can post a link.

I would certainly appreciate reading that once you're done! If you didn't already include the details in the write up, how'd the Pro Controller feel? Were the "grips" comfortable? Do the buttons feel much different from the Joy Con? Aside from the overall size that is.

If we're going to compare Zelda reviews to Horizon, I think the game will score more 10's, but also more 7's. It's going to be a very divisive game. If the final experience plays out like the Great Plateau on a much grander scale, it's going to resonate with some people more than any other open world game ever created, but it will also be a complete turn off for others.

The Pro was insanely comfortable - specifically the grips, they rested in my hands so nicely. I prefer the shoulder buttons/triggers on the Joy-Con to be honest. The buttons were good on both, but I found it easier to do a shield surf on the Joy-Con because of the smaller buttons (Shield+X -> A). I'm definitely changing the jump button.

Why would it be a turn off? I've yet to hear anything negative. At the same time yet to read anything that justifies all the hype other than it's Zelda

I can easily see the pacing and the various gameplay systems of BotW being an issue for certain reviewers. The game appears to be incredibly non-linear, even for an open world game. It's also a game that relishes in the idea of the player getting lost. This will appeal greatly to some, but not others.

that's great to hear - people have been saying similar things. i like the idea of the games being optimized for handheld play first and foremost.

i hear you too re: waking up the dog

1-2 Switch will score higher than that. The impressions of the demo games haven't been that bad. And it's 28 party games targeting the Lets Dance audience.

I've missed it so I'll ask here. Does the Dock have additional cooling?

Nope, it's literally just a piece of plastic that provides power and video out to the machine. Though, like laptops, the device can run at a higher level whilst docked due to not having any battery concerns.

Thanks, also it doesn't need to power the tablet screen while docked..

I'm curious to see how Jim Sterling reviews it after his video today. Shame we won't know it launch day though unless he can somehow find a Switch and Zelda before launch.

Oh yeah, of course.

I'm expecting to hear "It's good for what it is" type comments. Some "wait until it goes on sale."

I can definitely see it being a challenge to not review it like a game reviewer... So I'm actually looking forward more to the youtuber/not-dedicated-gaming-publication reviews and impressions.
