Pretty sure you make your wager based on the category, before you see the question. So if it's something that you don't think you know, and you're in the lead, you can safely bet less.

you've never watched Jeopardy, have you? They bet when they are given the category, then are given the question later. She was so far ahead of the other two people though that a $0 bet was the safest, that way she wins overall ($100k to overall winner) no matter if she is right or wrong. Thats also why the second guy only bet $4 even though he got it right, no matter what it puts him in first or second since even if the third guy bet everything and got it right, he'd still be behind the second guy.
