what jrpg are you playing right now ?

If I remember right, Ahriman also restricts item usage and summoning, so maybe you're doing those when you're not supposed to?

He can be stupidly easy if you do things right. I think I just completely debuffed him with Debilitate and then buffed my attack to x4 before even attacking him, this way the first form went out in an instant and so did the second before he could use dekunda.

Why can't I just have a simple equip system with simple gear ratings and bonuses, to make running around this cool alien world while listening to the wackiest fucking soundtrack ever so much more enjoyable?

I'm probably going to reveal what a simpleton I am with this post and a bunch of people are going to shit on me for not figuring out what is actually a super easy system, but fuck, I can't think of that game as anything but daunting when it comes to configuring my party, and it really gets in the way of some of the most fun exploration and combat out there in a JRPG. Even Nioh's myriad interlocking systems and mechanics are a welcome simplification over XCX in my opinion. I also recently finished Nier for the first time (Endings A and B, watched C and D on youtube). Speaking of simple, easy systems, NIer had it in spades. Minimal time spent looking at menus, maximum time running around with my bud Weiss. It did have way too many mundane sidquests though, but those were easy to skip.

So, Nioh. I'm playing Nioh.

edit: and super looking forward to FFXII HD later this year. Never got super far into that game, but loved what I played, and have always put off playing the Zodiac version on an emulator. Now we're getting in HD on PS4. Awesome.

I know the feeling. You're like, what stuff did I have equipped, what arts do I have, what quests... and it's just a never ending rabbit hole. I played in bits and pieces, same with Xenoblade Wii, and picking it up again every time was kind of annoying, but honestly... just find a build that works. Just equip some decent all around equipment, just get your basic arts together, and then don't worry about it again. Just go run around and play. Forget about looking at all those minute details again, it's just a drag. Don't worry about them too much. Never feel like you're locked into doing one particular task. Enemy that is killing you with one particular resistance? Just forget about him and go do something else. I put in almost 80 hours, and I don't think I've touched my equipment or arts since like hour 40 (besides to change my fashion gear once or twice). I've explored almost everything on foot, and I prefer combat on foot too. I leave my skell in random places, or to explore areas I couldn't before with that extra jump (and now flight). But honestly, I explored all of Primordia (even the terraces and caves) and Noctilum (except for the divine roost), Oblivia (except the floating rock), and more than half of Sylvalum (went there on foot after Chapter 4, landed during a crimson aurora which has to be one of the most beautiful gaming memories ever, and then proceeded to infiltrate Prone bases by running and jumping) and Cauldros in bursts. If I sat down to look at my equipment and stuff I wouldn't have fun, so I just ignore it. :P
 
I beat Lagrange Point. That final dungeon was a bit of a slog - there was a point halfway through where every random encounter was a 'boss' that played the boss music, luckily you still had a chance of running from them.

The final series of battles channels both Dragon Quest 4 and Phantasy Star 2 pretty heavily.

Taking a bit of a break from the genre until Nier: Automata (and even though it's an action RPG, Zelda ?!?!), playing Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2 in the meanwhile.
 
The final boss of FFX is driving me up the goddamn wall. Jesus christ, I've been grinding for 5 hours and I'm still way below the average strategy

Time to gather all the aeons and some of the ultimate weapons. I remember having to leave that boss alone for a while to beat it.

Started playing Ys Origin. Love the music, started the game and got to 4th floor. Initially only issue was sound used to crackle and skip a little (even after enabling the sound buffer option), but now sound won't play at all, and every few seconds the games framerate will drop to 1 and it'll freeeze for about a second. Literally unplayable.

Also started Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Just finished the initial bracer guild quest, where you grab the chest from the severs for Scherazard.

I started playing Arc Rise Fantasia for the first time, but I think I'll hold off on continuing that game until I make some progress in the other ones.

Mostly I stay busy and play Rocket League or Project M when I have a little while to play games, which means I'm not really making much progress on these RPGs...

I still need to play Baten Kaitos and Origins, Tales of Symphonia, and Skies of Arcadia, which I have on my Wii (which is my Gamecube). Also I have Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn... never got around to those, and I'm looking into acquiring a 3DS so I can play Awakening, Fates, and the new one... as well as a number of other RPGs that are on the 3DS too.... I also acquired (last summer) and have yet to play FF Tactics, Xenogears, and FF7 on PSX, suffice to say my RPG backlog is overwhelming and I usually end up playing quick games of Rocket League or Smash instead... I'm keeping an eye fixed on the Switch as well, I'll get it for Xenoblade 2 without doubt, but there seems to be a number of games being developed for it, like SMT, Fire Emblem, and a few other interesting ones... Someone send help.

Honestly last few years have been crazy with Biochem/Immunology and research. Now I have some more time on my hands so I'm slowly getting back into things on the RPG front.

A little advice: Dont play so many dense games at once.

1 RPG at a time. You will never make good progress or truly connect with a game, if you are playing other RPGs at the same time.
Similarly, I would split my reading between 2 or 3 thick fantasy or Sci-Fi books. It just doesn't work.
 
I've been very slowly chipping away at Etrian Odyssey IV over a long period of time. My first exposure to this franchise and I'm seriously in love with it. I'm nearing the end of the third stratum right now. I can't wait to dig into the rest of the games in the series, though right now I'm trying to just focus on finishing this one, which I'm sure I still have a long way to go in. I'm also keeping an eye out (and fingers crossed) for news about V getting a US release this year, as I'd love to be able to play a new EO game on release.
 
Quick question:

what Atelier games for the PS3 are really worth buying? Not a big fan of time limits so Rorona is off the table. Any of these as good as Atelier Iris 1? tia
 
Finally, after 6 or so years of owning the game, I've finally beat Shin Megami Tensei III. The final boss was surprisingly a cakewalk, especially when compared to the preceding boss fight.

I'm currently a little preoccupied with Ni-oh, but I think I'll start either Ace Attorney 3 or Shadow Hearts 2 in the near future.
 
Been messing around in Etrian Mystery Dungeon for a while, off and on. It's strange to say this about a roguelike, but I think it lends itself best to casual play.

Also just picked up Puyo Puyo Chronicle, now that I've finally given up on random 3DS localizations and decided to import everything that seems cool. I'm excited to start that one soon.

I know man. I have Untold 2 but I'm kinda holding off pkaying it because I have DQ8 and I'm holding out for an EOV announcement.
 
I'm trying to finish up Tokyo Mirage Sessions before the Switch drops. I forgot how good this game is.

I'm in the Chapter 4-5 Intermission.
 
Started Final Fantasy IX. Been trying to get through my backlog of some shorter games first but I'm planning on really getting into it next week and will probably play the shit out of it once I do.

First time playing IX? If so, I'm excited for you. It's not an 11/10 epic that some would call it but it's a damn fine game.

I just started Digimon Cyber Sleuth. Interesting stuff so far, though I've only played like an hour of it.

Yeah it's not 11/10 but it's definitely 10/10. ;-)

... I fired up Fantasy Life and made a character. Figured I'd give it a try when I need a break from DQ8 and FE Revelations. It looks like a light game that I can play for a few minutes or in front of the TV without any real brain power.
 
I'm about 8h into Persona 4 Golden now, I've been enjoying it enough I picked up 1-3 (including both 2's) and the await me on my vita after I finish 4.
 
I finished Skies of Arcadia and am trying to decide if I have time for another game before Breath of the Wild. Possible next game contenders: Xenosaga Episode I, Wild Arms Alter Code F, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, Suikoden III, Shining Force III, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Lunar Eternal Blue, Lightning Returns, Vagrant Story, Baten Kaitos Origins, Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Paper Mario 64, Radiata Stories, Shadow Hearts From the New World, Dragon Quest III.

Normally I find it easier to narrow down my backlog, but this time I am only down to about a third of it.
 
Finished Nights of Azure. I didn't expect a tiny hotel as a hub with a very few characters in it. Decent at best, yet enjoyable.

The post game boss was kicking my ass that I had to resort to grinding. Then I decided to buy Gargoyle from a vendor, and the rest is history.
 
IX's definitely an 11/10 ;)

Finally been getting through the second half of my oft-delayed Steam playthrough of it.

Really want to 100% it since it's my favorite game, but a few things are kinda silly... well, mostly it's the ridiculous 10k kill one. Even with ample grinding to learn abilities, I'm prolly gonna barely hit the 1k kill 'chievo. Compared to VII, which was very vanilla and not terribly grindy (think it only took a few extra hours of effort there) and VIII which took some good steps toward side content but then also got stupidly min-max (and introduced the 10k kills), IX largely has a great spread of achievements (it helps that the game is so robust with a ton of little extras hidden in) but a few are a bit overkill. Beak lv 99, for instance, is unnecessary grind when there are already several other Hot & Cold achievememts... and the Nero Bros shuffle is just plain stupid.
 
Final Fantasy XV - 15 hours in, on Chapter 6. Really enjoying the game, spent like 10 hours straight on side quests before I tackled the main missions. Quite addictive too, long loading/travel times be damned.
 
I started Shin Megami Tensei IV and after three 3DS recharges I'm already 8 hours in. This game totally exceeds my expectations so far. It took me a while to get past
minotaur
and reach
Tokyo
but so far it's been a blast to explore the stata and fuse demons to acquire the skills needed to overcome the boss. If the rest of the game is as good as the first part then I might be looking at a new favorite entry in the series.

I just got the 2nd star and Geno, at the Yoshi island right now.

So far it's underwhelming. It's been extremely easy so far. The characters, story, music, and overall feel all fall short of the other classics (Chrono Trigger, FF6, SoM, etc) that it's always mentioned alongside.

Does it get better? Should I stick with it?

It's not in the same tier as CT and FFVI IMO, but easily a lot better than SoM which I think is a broken mess of a game. I haven't played SMRPG for a long time but I think Geno isn't that far into the game yet, the story and characters don't really evolve much but the gameplay is really good.
 
5 hours into Nier Automata

It is so good. It may break my top 10 all time list if it ends up going where I think it's going, or does better.
 
Wild Arms 3 (PS4). I'm like 8 hours in and am having fun. World is kinda brown and grungy which is kinda unpleasant. I know it's post apocalyptic and all, but it starts to grate after a while. The particular kind of cel shading used is quite ugly too. Boss encounters have been pretty satisfying and I enjoy turn based combat. Exploration and dungeon puzzles are good with just the right amount of nonlinear stuff to find. It's a solid 7 or 8 right now. I expect the plot to go places eventually so I'm sticking around.

It's nothing close in any of that to Chrono Trigger, FF6, SoM. The most that can be said about it is it's fun if you like the battles and it's charming if you like the style. I like it but in the same way that I like FF:Mystic Quest. It's a neat unique little game, worth a try, not a masterpiece.

Lufia 2 and Earthbound are what you're looking for.

Been playing I Am Setsuna. Run of the mill jrpg with absolutely nothing special about it, but I'm digging it. Kinda getting a slight golden sun vibe from it, just obviously nowhere near as good. Also, seeing some Lunar influences there as well
 
I have never been able to get into Secret of Mana (though I plan to try one more time with three player multiplayer this summer), but what is the rest of the series like?

Adventures of Mana (Final Fantasy Adventure, Secret of Mana 0) is more like Link's Awakening than Secret of Mana 1.

What did you not like about Secret of Mana? How far did you get?

I finished ffvii on the ps4 last night and I wasn't happy with the ending. After all the time invested in the characters, that ending was very..... Empty. Waiting for that final moment and... "That's it? After all the time I spent on it, this is it? It just ended... Just like that?".
 
I'm playing Super Robot Wars V while I'm pick up and play for Dark Souls II SOTFS.

I've taken a break from Pokémon Moon as a result.

I've only made two avatars for Bloodborne but I haven't started it.

dragon quest : Dragon Quest V (20-25 hours), Dragon Quest VIII (70-90 hours)
breath of fire : Breath of Fire III (35-45 hours), Breath of Fire IV (35-45 hours)
star ocean : Star Ocean 2 (35-45 hours), Star Ocean 3 (50+ hours, unless you're fine with the plot twist)
 
Right now I am working through Dragon Quest VI on the DS. I have about 10 hours left in the main story (just unlocked the Pegasus). I usually chip away at the post-game at a later date.

Up next I think I am going tackle I am Setsuna on my PC.
