The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

The quest markers being in the game suck major ass. Wtf.

They showed at least two quests in previous videos and those didn't have any, guess some do and others don't. Hopefully is just an aid for less experienced people but you can turn it off, the quest/world design has to be done in a way that you can find your objective without using it, otherwise this is the first big cons of the game to me.

"The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time" is my favorite Zelda game and it was never a "beautiful" looking game from a purely technical standpoint

Yeah it was when it came out.

Yeah it was when it came out.

Griss already mentioned that the quest markers only show up if you select the side quest and quest givers give enough information to do them without. So they're completely optional for side quests.

Also, according to Polygon on the plateau you habe to finish 4 shrines and supposedly you're just told to climb to a high point so you get a good view and hopefully can spot them. There's supposedly some alarm that tells you that you're close to a shrine, but that can be turned off as well.

Yeah it was when it came out.

There was an option in the menu called "Pro" referring to the HUD and it took off the minimap and the noise making level detector and the temperature. Not sure if I missed anything - possibly health bars, I don't remember, but it looked pretty awesome. I turned it back on as I wasn't familiar with the game and area.

Yes, I'd say so. Absolutely. NPC's will say stuff like "You want to go north at the fork in the road, head east through the old fort wall until the mountain and the village is on the back side of it." If you're paying attention, that's more than enough info to get you there.

Another NPC pointed out 3 trees on the crest of a mountain, and said "If you line those three trees up, follow the line and you'll find a shrine." That sort of exploration is encouraged.

This is exactly what I wanted. Great to see it confirmed.

I love quest markers personally, I hate wandering around open worlds and trying to figure out where I need to go. Don't enjoy it, and too many games to get to to add playtime with that crap for me personally.

So I'm glad they're in their, but able to be turned off for people that prefer to explore on their own with limited guidance though. More games need to give gamers more options in how to play IMO.

Yeah it was when it came out.

When it first released, it was a technical marvel. It was one of the first 3D games to feature real-time weather and time-of-day. It's still beautiful to me even today. It gives me a good feeling while playing it.

"The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild" looks amazing to me and is by far Nintendo's best looking game to date.

Ok, but i'll still get the marker if i don't use the pro interface. Giving us the option to toggle single elements of the ui would've been much better.

EDIT: unless you're not forced to have an active selected quest. In that case the marker doesn't show up and it's all fine.

Do they only say it once ?

I need time to write that up on a sticky note !

Such cool quest design

Reviews hit on Thursday?

For what it's worth, here are my feelings on the game after 6 hours. Spoiler free.

Context: I am burnt out on open world games, am not a big Zelda fan, and prefer stylized art over photo-real graphics any day.

In my opinion, this is the first new feeling Zelda game since Ocarina of Time.

Flat out, the game is charming, fun, and polished to a mirror shine. It's a completely fresh take on Zelda in nearly every way. Some aren't going to like that, but for those with an open mind this game will be an absolute joy.

The world is large and has a sense of scale that is rare in open world games. Mountains feel gigantic and long bridges built hundreds of feet above a lake give a nice sense of height and danger.

Density of "stuff to do" strikes a good balance in my opinion. I always had an excuse to poke around and find side-quests, shrines, loot, and cooking ingredients hidden around the world. It's a joy to just walk around in.

Combat is hard, and the controls aren't very intuitive. But death isn't that punishing and reloading always happens within 10 seconds. There are a lot of ways to approach any combat scenario, most of them rewarding and fun. Although I can see this being the first thing about the game that wears thin after 20 hours.

The "tools" you get are usually physics based (or at the very least based around interacting with the world in an interesting way). The shrines all use your tools in unique ways, which I appreciate. They are a joy to figure out and complete.

People from certain boards throw around the term "comfy" to describe a game you can chill out and immerse yourself in, and BOTW fits that to a tee. From the atmospheric sound to the relaxing "play at your own pace" design. If you're down to relax and just enjoy something while wrapped up in a blanket burrito, BOTW has your back.

Summary: It's good.

Thanks for sharing your initial impression.

This is the situation as I understand it. Apparently not the case for main quests though.
Which still sucks, although i believe that one of the quests we've seen (specifically, the one they showed at the TGA) was from the main quest and that didn't have any marker.

Thanks for this. That's been one of the things I've loved about past 3D Zeldas and had worried a bit that it wouldn't be as true here with the weapon degradation, harder difficulty etc.

I play mostly to escape these days, and if a game isn't given me that through an immersive story and graphics etc. I like for it to at least be "comfy" and easy to get lost messing around in the world without too much difficulty or complex mechanics getting in the way of that for me.

Look man, if I'm gonna dick around the world for 15 hours instead of doing the main quest, I'd want that marker to exist so I remember where I need to go when I eventually gotta do it.

This guy is hyping the game like crazy... if only half of it is true we will truly see the second coming of chr... Zelda Ocarina of Time :D

Just to confirm, we can have multiple saves on the same account, right? I'm planning on having my own personal save but also two separate saves for two people who want to watch me play through the game at their own pace. It would be annoying to have to create 3 different accounts just because I want multiple saves. Especially since previous Zeldas have allowed for at least 3 save slots.

Multiple saves for one account. You'd need to play under a different user profile to have a separate set of saves.

edit: not NNID, sorry that's my bad

No, there's only one save, with six files on that one 'adventure'. It's handled so that one of the saves is your manual save, and then it goes back with 5 auto-saves in case you run into trouble.

But all 6 of those save files is under the umbrella of your 'one save', so to speak. I can't see how you could use the system to have multiple people play the game.

You might need those accounts...

(As an aside, the auto-save feature is excellent and has saved my ass on multiple occasions)

Doesn't the UI just let you create a separate user without needing to make an NNID for it?

EDIT: Yes you can. No need to worry about limited saves really, in fact this way's better as you won't get saves made by other people mixed up with your own.

Damn, the spoiler thread is not leaving that front page.

Anyone who's been there willing to say what the general feeling is? No spoilers, of course, just whether people are liking it or not.

Mostly excitement! Not a ton of posts from people who have actually played the game, mostly just folks eagerly obsessing over various streams and asset leaks, generally a very positive thread though.

I'd be very, very surprised to hear of anyone not liking it. I'm sure there are some criticisms as nothing is perfect but even for some non-Zelda fans this game seems to be making them think again.

Thanks! I'll enjoy reading through it once I've finished the game.

For those who have the game, how do you compare Koroks with Riddler puzzles?

I haven't played but from what I've seen there similar in concept but not as clearly marked. Link also has more means of interacting with the world than Batman which opens up additional possibilities for environmental puzzles.

Does this work with the Classic Pro controller? Since the gamepad is useless I'd rather use a controller. I don't have a Wii U Pro controller.

So would someone who pretty much hated Skyward Sword like this game?

Trying to deserve if I want to play this or Horizon first

I have a question for anyone playing on the Wii U version. Just curious about the performance and what the gamepad screen is used for. I've been considering picking up a switch but I'm not really interested in anything announced except zelda and splatoon so I'd rather pick up the wii u version for now instead of letting the switch collect dust for a few months.

There are some definite dips in fps at various parts in the game (mostly when looking at dense areas). There's a lot of this fps dipping in a particular part of the game a few hours in but I won't say more than that. Rain on the screen can also cause a big hit to this as well.

Gamepad is only used if you want to play the game there instead of the TV, otherwise it's just black telling you to click it to play.

I ordered the Wii U version for the same reason, I just can't justify the Switch at this point since I can play this game already with what I own.

Look at it this way. Which game will lower in price in say, the next two months? :D
True

Although here in Canada I can get it 20% off now anyway so it's more about what game do I want to put time into first.

The answer is a very strong yes.

But it depends on why you hated Skyward Sword.
I mostly hated it for the art design, mostly character design, didn't love the combat, the bird, the music, frustrating gameplay, the lack of voiced dialogue (I know it's finally here), just generally disliked it.

Aw man I was hoping they would put the map or something on the gamepad. Thanks for the info I'll grab the digital version then.

You'd still probably like it unless you wanted the atmosphere to be grim all the time like Bloodborne or something.

Yeah it would have been nice for sure. And I'd like to clarify and say that while I listed the issues with the fps at times, it's nothing in ANY way that has impacted my enjoyment of the game - at all. I notice it less and less and I continue on. But some may have real issues with stuff like that so just want to be honest. And it's nothing that's new, others have spoken to it as well.
