The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

As someone who has never played a Zelda game, could I go into BotW without playing the others?

You won't need to have played previous games, but I am sure there will be tonnes of little references to previous games you will miss out on.

But, if you go back and play games after, you may still get some enjoyment from seeing those elements in their original context.

Also it looks like he has two right hands wtf

I don't know what the consensus is so far and take my impressions with a grain of salt of course but I've been playing for around 10-15 hours and I'm not completely feeling it...

There are some genuine Zelda moments here and there, when the scenery, the action and the subtle soundtrack mix together perfectly to create a beautiful sense of adventure that sends chills down my spine. There are Xenoblade moments of awe derived from the simple sight of the land that lies ahead. And there are so many moments of little frustrations.

The combat forces you to switch weapons in almost every fight and the result is that I never have time to get a feel for their movesets and the inventory is so damn small... I like what little I have seen of the story but there's not enough tying the game together for me. The framerate on Wii U is pretty terrible at times. It's weird to see that in a modern Nintendo game. And the gamepad... They don't want to use it? Okay. But in that case don't have a goddamn message flashing on it the entire time!

The best part so far has been interacting with the goofy inhabitants of a village I ran into early on. The NPCs are charming as hell.

Sorry if I sound pretty negative. It's a good game obviously but like everybody here I hold the Zelda series to an extremely high standard and this entry is a little too rough around the edges for me. Hopefully the game will change my mind in the next few days.

This makes me smile like a kid: one of my favourite aspects of Zelda are the weird and interesting characters that inhabit the world, so it's nice to know that they did not cheap on this aspect!

Just seeing a bunch of kids running around melts my heart. Their run animations look so damn cute.

I ordered a KS8000 from The Good Guys (Australia) 5-6 weeks ago. They claimed 4 weeks, which was plenty of time to get here before Zelda. This is getting depressing :-/

I know the game looks great on handheld, but I wanted to experience the early moments on my new TV. #firstworldprobs

The voice acting change on Switch? lool
The voices will be the same on both versions.

I phased that really poorly, because reading my post again makes me sound like a moron.
I don't mean the switch has different voice acting, I'm just saying the only problems from previews so far seem to be the VO and the Wii U framerate. And those are two of the biggest turnoffs for me usually. I hope I can look past them.

Hearing the harsh views some people are giving to NoAs voice acting, im quite happy that NoE actually did the work of a big publisher and decided to localise the game with FIGS dubs. The only dubs ive really enjoyed from NoA are TW101 and Kid Icarus Uprising. Im 100% sure european dubs for game like other m and xenoblade X would have improved those aspects a lot.
And super happy that nintendo hired talented and professional voice actors from catalonia school of voice acting for the spanish version. They fucked up twice with the spanish smash narrator and I mever undertand why was the case they fucked up so badly with that game.

Other M's voices we're actually all pretty good and a step-up from the Japanese ones aside from Samus to be quite honest. It was more the fact that they weren't allowed to really tailor and punch up the writing for the western release that hurt it.

Thank you. I feared the battle system was going to be annoying :/ hopefully there's a way to make them not break especially bows which is the dumbest mechanic to me

Call and complain. They didn't complete service as you agreed and you paid big money I'm sure

Excited for the game I got two days to wait here in Japan. Really sad to hear about the voices. I can't understand why they would have both dubs in the game but lock the subs to their region. Seems really stupid

Already called the store. Not sure who else to talk to as they just shrug and say "sorry, out of our control" as it's samsungs not delivering on time that's at fault.

Maybe worth trying to call a general customer service line?

Will probably look better in handheld tbh, 900p to 4k scaling will not be ideal. Great TV though!

I really don't think that's a spoiler. But I'll edit just in case.

Well, don't confirm this for me, but it seemed like you were implying
that a village from a previous game returns. How else could the theme have changed?

I don't know if that's the case, and I don't want to know, but it isn't hard to connect dots like that.

I just don't think it's anything remotely surprising that we're in Hyrule and familiar places are back. It's like saying the Temple of Time is a spoiler. But I edited the post regardless.

So what are the impressions of the Wii U version? That is the one I am getting as I don't have the money for a Switch right now.

It's every bit as amazing as the Switch version.. just a bit rougher around the edges, and the framerate is quite unstable in busy areas. Load times might be a tad bit longer than the Switch (I'm not confirming this, but hazarding a guess) and there may be a bit more pop-in. But everyone that I've seen streaming the WiiU version is loving the game regardless.

It'll be a cleaner , denser picture for sure, but I don't currently have a TV, and I really want the larger image for my starting hours. Crossing my fingers they pull through over the next two days.

Played about 3 hours of the Wii U version tonight and overall I really enjoyed it, looking forward to getting the Switch on Friday now.

It's very different to past Zelda games but at the same time, it still feels like Zelda. The new shrines are pretty neat. I've done 5 so far, they don't take too long but they seem to get a little more complex with each one. The new powers / abilities you get are very cool.

One think that really strikes me about BotW is it's a survival game at it's core, with lots of resource gathering and cooking to make food to refill health and give status effects, like spicy hot food to keep you warm in cold / snowy area's if you haven't got the right clothing on. You have to watch your stamina a lot too. I'm not sure how everyone will react to this but I didn't find it too overwhelming and it still has the Nintendo charm.

The game doesn't hold your hand though and can be hard in places, it's easy to get killed if you aren't careful and weapon management is constant as weapons can break quickly, although you never seem to run short, as you just grab weapons off dead enemies.

You can go nearly anywhere from the start, although it gives you a subtle nod in the right direction, for the main story from time to time. This isn't story heavy (not so far anyway) but it's got me wanting to know more.

The graphics look good for the most part, I do love cell shaded games though but there is some pop in and the framerate can stutter from time to time, it's noticeable but it never stopped me enjoying the game. Was actually surprised how decent it looked on a 55" 4k TV.

I can see me sinking a lot of time into this game, the game world feels massive and gameplay seems solid so far.

Oh holy crap, well in which case that's an infinity% improvement then, good luck bud, hope they deliver on time!

It's not as crazy as it might sound haha. I have a 25" 1440p monitor, but everything not 1440p looks like mud on it. There's also a 55" 1080p in the house, but we share the house with in-laws, and that room is a just awful to be in. I consider it unusable and rarely step foot inside it (An absolute disaster of a mess. )

Anyway, thanks :P I hope they deliver too

So earlier I said the gamepad was only used for off-TV gameplay and that's actually not the case. Won't go into details but rest assured there will be something that you'll need the gamepad for. Don't you just love vague details like that... :P

Considering it hasn't been officially announced or shown off like the temple of time id agree that is most definitely a spoiler. I know you deleted it but i then read it in a quote later in the thread and i cant say i was too impressed when i came into a SPOILER FREE thread.

Seems some people cant help themselves when it comes to this shit. Time to go on a full lock out until the 3rd!

Minor early game question to others who have the game regarding upgrades:
did you go with a heart container or more stamina?

Thank you. I feared the battle system was going to be annoying :/ hopefully there's a way to make them not break especially bows which is the dumbest mechanic to me

Its not a dumb mechanic when every single enemy has a weapon. I havent seen anyone say they've run out of weapons. I think of it like hotline miami, you're supposed to be grabbing things, beating dudes, throwing it at another dude, keep going. I want to try going in to a camp with no weapons and stealing them and throwing them etc

Cool, don't mind that at all.

Quick question about the WiiU frame rate. How does it compare to the slow down in wind waker hd?

It was definitely noticeable in the game, especially when bombs were going off I think. But it didn't affect my enjoyment of the game. Hoping it's similar here.

This game is the real deal. It's very Zelda but it also borrows a lot on open world games. I'm very reminded of Witcher 3 in the way the world feels.

Majora's mask was always my favorite game not because of the dark theme but of how alive the world felt. In my 4 or so hours of play this already is above Majoras in how alive it feels.

I had a really frustrating play session there where I died 15 times in 90 minutes and made no progress. Just lost in an empty vast mountain range, and since it was raining I couldn't climb my way towards where I needed to go, and fast travelling would have only taken me backwards. The rain seemed to last forever, every enemy could one shot me... and yet this was the path to my next objective, as far as I could tell.

My enthusiasm is cooling a little bit as the systems sink in and I get used to them. The game world is definitely too large and empty. You spend a lot of time climbing mountains to avoid strong enemies, or finding vantage points to sail over them. There's just too much traversal time through areas with absolutely nothing at all in them, too many opportunities to avoid gameplay. And having all of the puzzles sequestered in the shrines doesn't help the liveliness of the overworld either.

Secondly, the weapon system (which I've liked) showed it's ugly side. I was raiding a high level area with mobs that can kill me in one hit. I was able to stand my own because I had a boomerang with a 36 attack stat. So I throw it at one of the dudes, well into my little sortie, and this time I fail to catch it. I flies off the cliff behind me and there's no way I'll ever find it. My next strongest weapon? Level 4. I went from being on a fair footing in terms of attack (but not defence) to having no hope and just having to fast travel away. In the last 4 hours I still haven't found as strong a weapon so I haven't been able to go back there. It's very strange to play a modern game that's so punitive in terms of loss of power. It's not bad... but I can see the frustration now.

Lastly, I was way too hard on the voice acting earlier. Later on in the game, and it is in fact serviceable, like the trailer suggested it would be. Zelda is very up and down, but at least she does have some ups. Other supporting characters are okay too. It's just some of the stuff at the start gave a terrible impression. So that's not as big a deal as I was making it out to be.

I think a lot of people will end up feeling like this, and I've certainly flirted with these feelings. It wasn't until I rocked up at my first village and started chatting to NPCs that I had that whimsical "Yeah, this is zelda" feeling.

And I mean, 12 hours in and no sign at all of any dungeon anywhere has me a little worried too. Where the hell are they?

I never noticed any slowdown in WWHD. Here it's absolutely appalling at times. Makes the game substantially less responsive. If you're sensitive to this framerate stuff buckle in... it's not pretty.

I've been going
stamina
but apparently that's the wrong decision. Oh well, I'm playing completely blind which is the great thing about all this. If I make mistakes I make mistakes.

I also chose
stamina
but after seeing how small it was I just reloaded and chose
a heart container
instead. About to get my second one too!

I never thought I'd ever read a sentence like this when discussing a 3D Zelda game.

So excited. I think a ton of 3D Zelda fans are going to hate some of the stuff Griss is talking about, but man, these impressions have me so hyped. Zelda 1 and 2 are far and away my favorite games in the series.

Call me crazy, but most of that is music to my ears.

I believe a lot of previews points out this
If you don't prepare, I go to somewhere you shouldn't be, you got rekt

It's one thing to read it, though, and another thing to experience it.

"Fuck man I just platinumed Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 and no-hit Orphan of Kos in the DLC these reviewers suck at games how hard could it... be... FUCK"

Let me be clear - the difficulty is one of the very best things about this game. I'm starting to wonder about enemy variety, though. Seemed really high at first, but now I'm thinking maybe every region has the same set of enemies, recoloured or tweaked. Would be a bit disappointing if true.
