Did you know 65% of the world is lactose intolerant?

Lactase persistence is apparently a fairly a new trait. About 25% of the United States population is lactose intolerant which is still a crazy high percentage in my opinion. On the other hand, 3 out 4 Indians are lactose intolerant.

How do these people survive?! Milk based products are such an integral part of my diet, I can't imagine life without it.

Lactose intolerance really only affects your ability to drink liquid milk. Other things like cheese and yogurt are fine. So yeah, they just don't drink it.

Would I want to live without cheese?

I don't want to know the answer to that question.

Oh didn't know that. Doesn't it depend though because I know some people won't eat ice cream if they have it. That would be hard.

I'm a vegan whose transition was made a hell of a lot easier by being lactose intolerant. I was a late bloomer with my intolerance and it's shocking how few people realize that dairy doesn't typically work well with their system. It took me violently shitting after drinking a milkshake to realize that milk/dairy wasn't really that important in my life.

Lactose intolerance doesn't mean you can't or don't have dairy. Its not like you have some sort of severe allergic reaction from it. For many it just means if you have nominal amounts of it you'll get gassy, might get a cramp, stomach ache or something. Some people react worse than others, then some people will only see symptoms if they eat a block of cheese or chug a pint of milk.

so that idea that drinking milk is an neo nazi stuff ..... it is a characteristic of like 40% of the world ?

Correct. I get gassier when I drink milk, but yea I still drink it. It's really not that big an issue

They make little chewable pills you can take anytime you want to have dairy, it's no big deal. My roommate is lactose intolerant and she eats dairy all the time.

I started losing tolerance after switching to soy milk. I can deal with dairy products, but milk in the coffee will make my stomach feel a bit sick for hours.

Yep, cows and goats I believe are relatively new domesticated species and as a result very few humans can tolerate dairy products. I think alcohol is about he same on tolerance levels.

It's pretty easy really, just use the one of the million dairy milk substitutes. The misconception that milk is an essential part of our diets is even crazier when you consider how many of us are lactose intolerant.

Yep, I believe it's mostly people from European descent that tolerate lactose. If I remember right it was something about how they traditionally ate more dairy than other cultures, so over time they built up the immunity.

it's weird, i eat pizza almostly weekly and have no problems... but milk i can't handle anymore since i stopped drinking it regularly after graduating from high school.

I only have this problem in the morning. I can eat ice cream or drink as much milk as I want without any problem in the afternoon and evening.

I only have major symptoms I.E. bubble guts and bathroom destruction when eating ice cream or drinking traditional milk. When I first started having intolerance to lactose even lots of cheese would get me.

There's a spectrum of lactose intolerance. Most people that are lactose intolerant are only mildly so(they get the runs basically).

On the other hand, 3 out 4 Indians are lactose intolerant.

These lactose intolerant people will probably live longer than you will.

Milk rates high on the insulin index (as much as a reaction to bread) according to this 2001 study, so high consistent consumption could increase risk of diabetes.

A Swedish study looked at milk consumption and % of osteoporosis although further analysis is required.

When I was young my parents would use Lactaid drops in milk.

Eventually all my siblings and I were found to be Lactose intolerant too.

We switched over to Lactose free milk over a decade ago. I think we did it as soon as it was available.

If I (or a family member) have to eat something with cheese I always take a Lactaid tablet.

that's me now =/ only started happening a few years ago... should've kept drinking milk during college. i guess in elementary- high school they served it every day @ lunch, but in college i could drink/eat anything i wanted.

This is me. Eventually I cut out most dairy because it just wrecked my digestive system every time.

I still eat it occasionally, I usually just take several Lactaids and I'm fine.

Drinking the milk of the cow tit is unnatural.

I think I remember reading that lactose tolerance is a rather new trait being developed by humans through the proliferation of selective breeding with those that exhibit those tolerances.

Basically, you're a mutant if you are lactose tolerant.

nope, sorry to burst your bubble but you are wrong.

lactose is contained in many foods, manly in milk, cheese and Joghurt. (except a few cheese varieties which are naturally lactose "free")

you think that's bad? it is also in many breads or bakery goods, like white bread, toast, croossants, donuts etc.

but here comes the worst thing: it is also in most chocolates, ice cream, nutella, cakes, waffles ... etc. so yeah anything that is sweet

but nope that's not all: it is also added as a taste enhancer to stuff that normally wouldn't contain lactose in it. thanks food industry!

so you do have to restrain yourself from many many foods or you have to take little pills containing lactase (which "normally" would be created by your own body, but is not, or to few in lactose intolerant people)

i'm too much of a man to take any pills but start whimpering like a baby when my stomach hurts.

My lactose intolerance went from 0 to 100 in the span of a few months in my early twenties. I can't even drink a small glass of milk.

I'm glad I'm lactose tolerant. I can live without drinking milk, but not eating cheese? Hell no.
Cheese has very low amounts of lactose and a lot of it has none. Most lactose intolerant people can eat any amount of cheese without problems.

Indeed, just about the only thing that lactose intolerance makes impossible to consume in any quantity is milk (and, similarly, cream). Even things that are relatively high in lactose, like ice cream, can be managed.

I'm the grandchild of dairy farmers and can't drink a glass of milk without feeling nauseous for the rest of the day including diarrhea.

They make pills for us. It's not like we can't ever have dairy.

That said, dairy's not such a huge part of my life. I became lactose intolerant during a period of years where I just didn't eat much dairy. I guess since I wasn't using it much, I lost the ability to produce lactase. I'd be absolutely fucked if I had a meat allergy, though.

As other people have said, it's a spectrum. Some people who are lactose intolerant cannot handle any dairy products, but many other people are able to consume most dairy foods just fine.

I'm lactose intolerant but I'm able to drink milk regularly without much issue.

I think I am to a certain degree but I can deal with it. Put a milkshake and a pizza in front of me then I'm happy with the trade off.

Lactose intolerance really only affects your ability to drink liquid milk. Other things like cheese and yogurt are fine. So yeah, they just don't drink it.

Yeah... that's not really true at all. Maybe for some, but you could set your watch by how quickly frozen yogurt will destroy my stomach. (9 minutes btw)

I've always been lactose intolerant, never really drank milk much as a kid. And don't like it.

Also can't handle a lot of cheese; just a few of the harder ones like Parmasean, don't bother me.

But I've been known to down a pint of ice cream and just live with diarrhea

Cheese or some yogurt does nothing to me, but drinking a milkshake or eating a lot of icecream kills me every time. I tend to limit myself on these things because of this (which is just as well since icecream is one of the least healthy things you can eat, and I tend to prefer sorbet anyways.) I'm even apprehensive to eating the yogurt in an Iskander kebab,

although my tastebuds override my gut in those situations and I don't think those have been too terrible for me.

I may want to keep a pack of Lactaid pills around though for if I ever go to a restaurant or something that has an offending thing I want to try.

I know that African descent (such as myself) has a very high number of people that are intolerant.

Lactaid pills don't work that well for me. I can tolerate dairy in small doses.

I'm one of the more severe ones, I'll avoid anything dairy pretty much. I'll have pizza once and a while with strong lactaid pills from Costco. I'll still feel like crap the next day. My stomach will look like I'm 6 months pregnant.
