Alien Covenant - Trailer 2

Batman v Superman didn't retroactively improve Man of Steel

Most movies don't retroactively improve other movies. It's kind of a weird idea. Either the movie works or it doesn't.

Empire doesn't make Star Wars better
Godfather II doesn't really make Godfather better.
ALIENS certainly doesn't make ALIEN better.

I don't know that Evil Dead II makes Evil Dead any better.
Pretty sure Nightmare on Elm Street 3 doesn't make Nightmare 2 worth watching.

Conversely, I can't think of a shitty sequel that made the original less good, either. Revolutions didn't fuck up Matrix. Diamonds are Forever doesn't make On Her Majesty's worse.

I dunno. It's always been an argument that doesn't carry much weight with me. Either the movie works or it doesn't.

Man, lots of party poopers ITT. As long as this isn't an incoherent pile of polished shit like Prometheus, I'll be happy. But then, I'm just an Alien fanboy who's looking for nothing more than people getting killed by monsters, wrapped up in a simple but believable sci-fi plot.

So basically, what you're saying is we're dealing with an already low bar that you're fine with moving even further south if you have to.

So let me guess. Those bodies are all engineers on a giant ass "engineer central city plaza" and it was their way to commit suicide after their creation ran rampant and wiped out the whole planet? Or maybe they got "nuked from orbit its the only way to be sure" from some surviving engineers?

Shaw's "surprise" appearance better be her getting the MC spot again at the end for the future sequels. She is the one character in this franchise I don't want to have a slasher or body horror demise; her performing a caesarean on herself to extract the trilobite was enough. Let 👏 her 👏 explore 👏 space.

My guess is Shaw is going to be extremely fucked up in this movie and has been probably been serving as David's forced human incubator for his xeno experiments.

Maybe David just fired some sort of airborne toxin he concocted from the black goo into the sky.

And now he's walking through the results.

The idea of David/Shaw landing on the Engineer homeworld and just unintentionally (or intentionally, from David's POV) fucking it up would be a pretty great story beat, I think.
The Covenant experiencing the aftermath could be interesting.

I really enjoyed Prometheus despite its glaring flaws, so this new trailer has raised my hype.

The bar is certainly low. Each Alien movie has been worse than the one before it without exception. So yeah, to break expectations it just has to be as good as Resurrection, though I'm honestly expecting it to be Alien3 with better visuals.

The franchise had always been about survival, so I don't see what's wrong with not trying to pile on a bunch of heady, origin-of-life, tidy backstory nonsense on top of that.

I think that's a realistic outcome for convenience. It'd be disappointing that it reduces the once implied MC of the saga, a uniquely motivated survivor of the events of Prometheus including David not-so-indirectly experimenting on her already, to a thing.

I'm hoping that having Noomi Rapace on set for a week lead to something more.

so we are never gonna find out where the engineers came from, are we ? I was also thinking how all alien movies follow this generic formula of a usual exploration trip gone bad.

At least in Prometheus the MC and her partner were actively seeking that shit out, even if they would still become unsuspecting victims to a degree. That was different.

There are signs in this trailer that this is indeed an Engineer world. We even see building structures and, presumably, a ton of Engineer corpses.

This trailer is much better than the first, almost looks like a different film... lol

I'll watch this just because I love Alien. Let's see what comes from this.

Much better than the first trailer. Looks to be going a little to action movie for my taste, but we shall see.

Excited for this.

More dumbass scientists, sheesh. "Durr, what're the odds we find wheat on an alien planet?" Would've thought Ridley learned how to write intelligent human beings after The Martian.

I feel like Ripley is the only character in this entire universe that isn't a moron.

Prometheus was dumb as a bag of rocks (as were all of its characters), but it was entertaining with the brain shut off and very pretty.

This at least looks like it'll at least maintain that 'pretty' bar.

She was only on set for a week? In that case, her screentime is probably capped at like 1 or 2 scenes. :lol

Given how much Daniels seems to be overtly echoing Ripley, I'm guessing she is going to be our main protagonist going forward.

Speaking of which, I'm a little unclear on the progression of these movies. Ridley keeps talking about a prequel trilogy to Alien, but is Covenant part 2 of that trilogy with Prometheus having been part 1? Or is Prometheus now just its own thing, and Covenant is the start of a new trilogy?

What those few scenes will be are key. It could be tying up a loose end or it could be keeping her around as a player in the universe.

Prometheus stands on its own, Alien: Covenant is a start of a "new" prequel saga that Scott wants to have 3 more sequels that will end directly tying into the original Alien.

That's what was being said in fall 2015 though. Who knows what the status is now and what will be said during all the press stuff for Covenant at release. Scott backtracks a lot. “The beast is done. Cooked.”

How does david get a new body? He was just a head at the end of prometheus. I know the new android is not david but still.

II liked Prometheus, I want to see the interaction between David and Walter.. David being a eight generation android, and what's different between his the waiter model...

This movie is supposedly the first in a trilogy of actual Alien prequels, although in reality it's Prometheus 2. I won't go into the leaks but it connects directly to the last film. Obviously the studio isn't dumb enough to use the Prometheus name with the fetid stench of that film still lingering.

Or it was a ritual sacrifice? They all took a face hugger to the face and created thousands of aliens in the name of ritual? Engineers believed the aliens are the perfect being and becoming one with them is the next step of evolution?

Why not use the jaw?
Or the acid spit?
Or the tail?
Have ever seen it using the spit on screen? Cant recall right now, I think the one time Michael Biens armor was about to rot away it was just blown away by a shitgun?

Also I dont expect Ridley Scott to acknowledge the parts Cameron brought into the Xenomorph mythology.

You know what's really bothering me about that last scene? It's not even the goofy alien cgi, it's Danny McBride with that stupid cowboy hat. Dude is a comedian and just looks out of place in this.

They made a similar bad casting choice in Kong Skull Island with John C. Reilley.

Alien 3

There's a shot STRAIGHT out of ALIENS in this trailer though. He's acknowledging Cameron, absolutely.

Also, I'm now, more than ever, dead certain that the speculation I saw on this board (wish I could remember who came up with it) is accurate: This whole series ends with us finding out the Jockey on LV-426 is, in fact, David.

I hope that's the extent of it, homage. No warriors, queens, pulse rifles and power loaders.

The Newborn isn't necessarily a thing in Prometheus because David shoots some baskets like Ripley did in Resurrection.

Wasn't the Jockey in Alien huge with a hole in his chest that implied (at least in my mind) that he had been killed by a chest-burster?

Thanks, didnt remembered this

Which one? The bug like movement of the Xenomorph in the last scene? It was one of these working days with grinding your teeths of and I have some trouble remembering that^^. But I am more afraid about the lifecycle, I dont want him to make the Queen go away.

OK, if they pull this of with a straight face, I am going to drive to Hollywood and burn my Alien stuff in front of his house....

Edit:

Thats right.

Yup.

And David is somehow a disembodied head with no droid body that apparently has a major role in a direct sequel after apparently having committed mass genocide of a race of godlike alien beings.

I'm betting there's probably an explanation as to how/why biomechanoid superweapons exist somewhere in there, and that explanation would probably allow for David to be in that seat somehow.

I'm disappointed they broke out of the alphabetical naming order for new androids. I always thought it was a neat detail.

Alien - Ash
Aliens - Bishop
Alien Resurrection - Call
Prometheus - David
Alien: Covenant - Walter
