The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild **SPOILER FREE** Impression Thread

I loved SS too. This, however, is the exact opposite - a direct response to SS, and it skirts very close to 'an empty environment designed just to fill curiosity' at times. There's a strong argument to be made that's it's just too big. But that'll be for people to decide themselves.

That has me so excited. Twilight Princess is my favorite, but the world in that game feels so tiny and restricting. Breath of the Wild sounds like exactly what I've been wanting from Zelda since 1998: a vast living world world to explore and exist in, making my own adventures rather than following the clearly laid out path designed to give every player the same experience. I'm still having trouble believing this game actually exists now.

So much to say I don't know where to begin

This is the first time I didn't sleep all night to play a game, I never did that before

The gameplay, the level design, the feeling of freedom, this world oh my god there is so much to say about it, I'm going to sleep maybe I'll write some real impressions tomorrow but really I don't think so since it will just eat my playtime

Glad you're enjoying it, but read the OP guidelines before posting any further impressions.

After reading OP guidelines I figure it's okay to post about this minor interaction I had with an animal that tickled me a bit but I'll spoiler tag it anyway.

Was exploring the outside of a stable and I found a dog chilling. It looked just like my IRL dog so I thought it was funny. I threw down some meat and he ate it happily and then followed me around the stable grounds until I finally left. Followed me away for a short distance before returning to the stable.

Little things like that putting a smile on my face.

Gah sorry don't even know where to ask this but:

1) Are joy-cons the default Switch controllers?
2) Which one is BOTW made for? Pro or Joy?

1) Yes
2) Well, it was "made for" the Wii U GamePad. So to that end, a solid controller will likely best approach the original intent. The Pro Controller or the Joy-Cons in the Joy-Con Grip should hit the spot just fine, though I'm sure it's still perfectly playable with split-grip Joy-Cons.

i am so hyped. about 12 hours until reviews hit and about 30 hours until the game is out...

The next time you see a dog try crouching beside it.

This isn't a spoiler BTW. I only put it in tags since you put yours in tags.

This game is so much better than I imagined it would be from the reveal trailer. It's flawed, but its brilliance more than makes up for that to me. A strong GotY contender and for many people this will be the definitive Zelda game. For a smaller group I think it'll be very controversial. Zelda games always are.

Thanks for the impressions, sounds great!

Should be picking up my Switch and Zelda tomorrow.

RSI in my thumb is pretty bad after some marathon Horizon sessions (incredible game) but hopefully the JoyCons' strange shape will go easy on my thumb joint.

Fingers crossed I'll have impressions up tomorrow night! (Chances are reviews will say all we need but hey.)

The stuff that dreams are made of.

I know this is the spoiler free thread but is it OK if I talk about a neat mount/horse mechanic?

So I was finally able to find a horse and tame him...After trying to mount other animals and not even getting close.

After I successfully tamed him though, I noticed that I wasn't really controlling him? I would try to but he was pretty much deciding where to go and would struggle with me whenever I tried to take point him where to go.

I made it to the nearby stable and I noticed there's a temperament stat and that my horse was wild.

He is still struggling with me but we're getting by.

If Link speaks the only words he should say are 'Well' and 'excuse' and 'me' and 'princess', exclusively in that order.

Oh my god, my mind went faster than my eyes when reading this and came up with the idea that Link would go "Well," and then the game would cut to black and end right as he was about to finally say something

Nintendo made so many different animation-schedule for npcs depending the time, some are just adorable. I am only at first village. I need an Zelda anime, lol

I know what you mean. The inclusion of Zora's has me hopeful for underwater exploration and an underwater dungeon.

Seriously no matter how good the game might be if underwater exploration isn't in the game i'd be pretty disappointed.

I know we can't dive underwater in the beginning but maybe (hopefully) we can learn it somehow from the Zoras? That'd be pretty cool.

I apparently jumped timelines to the one where people like the water dungeons. This is the darkest timeline.

Water dungeons are almost always the best dungeons. Ancient Cistern, Water Temple, Tower of the Gods, Lakebed Temple... terrific.

Water Temple
Great Bay Temple
Angler's Tunnel
Inside Lord Jabu-Jabu (Oracle of Ages)
Lakebed Temple
Ancient Cistern

Zelda games have great water dungeons.

I'm not specifically talking about dungeons. I mean overall, exploring Lake Hylia underwater, finding treasure chests, mini games etc.

Eh, different strokes for different folks. I don't mind the water temple as much as some, but I hate water levels in games in general. PTSD from Sonic I guess.

Water is the best element. It's great for physics puzzles and it has 3 phases (ice, water, and steam). Not my fault other games have crappy water gameplay. It's good in Zelda.

I do kinda think it'd be a waste to have something like Lake Hylia without being able to explore underwater, so I do hope it's possible. Not a huge deal tho.

I remember seeing a chest under shallow water, but it was out of reach without diving. Not sure if you get dive later on or if it was a puzzle. TBH, goodbye water bs! (hopefully :P)

It's amazing. I'll say that. I don't know how to say much without spoiling, but everything about the game is great.

There are certain areas in the game where they just absolutely nailed the atmosphere. The fog works really well.

There's a huge feeling of "I'm the one who did that", instead of the developer creating a maze where there's only one way to solve it. At one point I circled around some cliffs and went somewhere I probably shouldn't have gone. It had
two chests guarded by a strong monster,
and I had just come up behind with my glider and bypassed everything to get to it.

Music and characters are great too. While the overworld and battle themes are pretty forgettable, character themes and cutscene themes are really awesome.

Honestly this is a game I cannot stop thinking about no matter what I do. I think I'm around 25 hours in, and I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface of anything.

Literally just finished twilight princesses water dungeon. This has to be the worst experience I've had with Zelda before.

I think I saw that in an E3 livestream. To get it the player
used the magnesis rune to pull the chest out of the water

There's gotta be some Zora gear that gives you water breathing or at the very least the ability to cook food that extends your time underwater.

Link's Zora outfit in TP is amazing design. I love it.

I want cool-ass fins again.

I actually think the best mechanic Zelda has ever done is letting you transform with masks into other races. It makes for such natural and creative puzzle-solving.
