I can't complain about the reviews because it's a 10 out of 10 for me personally, so it makes sense that it is for others too.
However I'm sure some people won't like the game as much as reviews indicate. The world truly is huge and largely empty, you can't get around that. There's a ton of traversal, like any open-world game. If open-world isn't your thing the game might bore you to tears at times. Framerate is a disaster dropping into the single digits at times, and the visuals are honestly pretty poor outside of the brilliant character designs - the IQ is horrendous and the textures are really, really low-res for a game in 2017. It feels like the game design is just too much for the weak hardware it's on, and that's something you can NEVER say about Nintendo games, which are usually very carefully designed around the hardware they have.
And a lot of the breaks from Zelda convention will upset some people too, as will the lack of a truly compelling story. But I love Zelda, I love the first Zelda in particular, and I love open world games. So to me it was just a delicious dish of all the things I like in gaming. It's a massive, massive leap forward from past 3D Zeldas, there's just no denying it. Moment to moment it's just a joy to play, a real joy.
But will there be a backlash to the hype? Yes, yes there will. And I expect it'll start tomorrow when everyone starts getting their hands on the game.
One Official Thread per area ;PIs everyone playing yet?
I've been playing for a couple days and I just did something pretty cool and I need to talk to someone about it.
This game is going to be tough to discuss on here because it is so huge and everyone can be at entirely different places at any point of the game.
You were never alone man. We're here. We just got tired of being shouted down.Yes, it's called the Zelda Cycle.
I'll soon not be terribly alone in my love for Skyward Sword.

I think the "Link from the Past" title was a bit less meta :
The 98 title was fucking clever though!
Buying this on wiiu is like Van Gogh painting on toilet paper. Get a Switch!
I couldn't secure one at launch even with all the work I did. My Switch is coming in 3 days and I was always planning on getting it for the Wii U.Buying this on wiiu is like Van Gogh painting on toilet paper. Get a Switch!
I don't know shit about Zelda lore but there's a cutscene in this game with a major npc saying"Whether skyward bound, lost in time or shrouded in the darkness of twilight" so I assume this takes place after Twilight Princess?
I also found a stone tablet referencing Princess Ruto from OOT (in this game she's a Zora princess from long, long ago.

The controls are hard to get used to, though. So much switching and inventory management.
No button mapping/control scheme configuration whatsoever?

How do you survive in the cold?
there is a gamexplain video showing it.Do we know what the season pass chests contain yet? I'm pretty curious.
Just swapping the jump button and some camera options.
You have to hold down right on the d-pad to cycle through melee weapons after you've hit Y. You have to do the same for bows with R, and you use R and left for arrow types. You hold down left to cycle with shields.
And when your weapon inventory is full, you have to pause and drop something to pick up a new weapon.
Kinda clunky. Weird because the rest of the UI is intuitive
Is the attack button kinda wonky/un responsive or is that me?

I'm curious how people will justify this dlc. $20 for this is an insult. I know that 2 proper dlc are on the way, but for now this is a scam.Ah, thanks! I'm still blocking Zelda videos now that I think about it, no wonder I couldn't find anything.

I'm playing it today, and nothing is going to stop me.
EDIT: update is almost over! See you all on the other side!

How do you even cook food? It wasn't explained i'm sure...
I keep asking this to everyone and I never get a straight answer from who's playing lol, but I'll not surrender: without any spoiler, is the story good or not? Nintendo made me believe this was the most cinematic Zelda ever but reading reviews and impressions it seems as if the story actually takes a back seat compared to any 3d zelda that came before it.

You're not, because I too loved Skyward Sword.

kotaku commenter said:Jason, could you comment at all on why this is fundamentally different from other open world games? You climb towers to reveal the map, you come across enemies and enemy encampments that you need to come up with an approach for, you find special areas, etc.
I think its almost certainly reductive to just say because it has Zelda in the title as an explanation, but I feel like Im not getting it. A lot of these mechanics sound very similar to things that many reviewers have been saying are getting old or formulaic. What makes this different for you?
Jason Schreier said:Other open-world games tend to be more about potential than they are about delivery. The promise of what youll find is more exciting than what you actually find. The promise that you can do anything is more exciting than what you can actually do. Breath of the Wild, on the other hand, has both potential and delivery. Theres a certain feedback loop to the game: Youll see something, go after it, and know that youre going to find something interesting when you get there. Not just another cave full of Draugr.
Hold the ingredients in your hands and drop them into one of those.. I dunno what to call them, like stone wok pans I guess
Yeah... reading the reviews, it sounds like this game is not for me. I can't say I've ever really enjoyed a Zelda game as much as other people. The lead up to Breath of the Wild felt really weird to me because everyone was exploding about how incredible the game was and I didn't see it.
The reviews make it sound like the open world itself is empty and all you do is combat in it, the only side content are those shrines which are apparently all just puzzles, and the side missions from people, but all I've seen don't look that appealing to me. I understand the novelty of just exploring, but I don't know what the actual purpose of exploring is when it sounds like every weapon is breakable. I dunno.
I might pick the game up in December when I get a switch for Mario Odessy
I hope other people do end up enjoying it, but ultimately it just frustrates me that I can never get into the series millions consider as one of the greats.
Welp, time to return everything I guess.Major flaw with this game (and Switch) is that I'm now working half asleep because I couldn't get myself to stop playing last night. I exited my living room and went to bed to sleep but on my journey to get some rest I committed the ultimate sin... I brought my Switch with me!
