Why are you wasting your time on patches? You can play Zelda out of the box. Patch does nothing to Zelda aside from giving an option for dlc, which for now is a stinking turd.

I can't complain about the reviews because it's a 10 out of 10 for me personally, so it makes sense that it is for others too.

However I'm sure some people won't like the game as much as reviews indicate. The world truly is huge and largely empty, you can't get around that. There's a ton of traversal, like any open-world game. If open-world isn't your thing the game might bore you to tears at times. Framerate is a disaster dropping into the single digits at times, and the visuals are honestly pretty poor outside of the brilliant character designs - the IQ is horrendous and the textures are really, really low-res for a game in 2017. It feels like the game design is just too much for the weak hardware it's on, and that's something you can NEVER say about Nintendo games, which are usually very carefully designed around the hardware they have.

And a lot of the breaks from Zelda convention will upset some people too, as will the lack of a truly compelling story. But I love Zelda, I love the first Zelda in particular, and I love open world games. So to me it was just a delicious dish of all the things I like in gaming. It's a massive, massive leap forward from past 3D Zeldas, there's just no denying it. Moment to moment it's just a joy to play, a real joy.

But will there be a backlash to the hype? Yes, yes there will. And I expect it'll start tomorrow when everyone starts getting their hands on the game.

Yeah... reading the reviews, it sounds like this game is not for me. I can't say I've ever really enjoyed a Zelda game as much as other people. The lead up to Breath of the Wild felt really weird to me because everyone was exploding about how incredible the game was and I didn't see it.

The reviews make it sound like the open world itself is empty and all you do is combat in it, the only side content are those shrines which are apparently all just puzzles, and the side missions from people, but all I've seen don't look that appealing to me. I understand the novelty of just exploring, but I don't know what the actual purpose of exploring is when it sounds like every weapon is breakable. I dunno.

I might pick the game up in December when I get a switch for Mario Odessy

I hope other people do end up enjoying it, but ultimately it just frustrates me that I can never get into the series millions consider as one of the greats.

Is everyone playing yet?

I've been playing for a couple days and I just did something pretty cool and I need to talk to someone about it.

This game is going to be tough to discuss on here because it is so huge and everyone can be at entirely different places at any point of the game.
One Official Thread per area ;P

(I'm only half joking.)

Yes, it's called the Zelda Cycle.

I'll soon not be terribly alone in my love for Skyward Sword.
You were never alone man. We're here. We just got tired of being shouted down.

But yeah, I expect this game to get torn to shreds by its detractors and it's going to be the people who were weaned on the modern Zeldas I think. I hope not but every AAA game of this magnitude gets some type of backlash and Zelda always gets extreme reactions.

It was a tough choice, but the 98 title would have lost meaning if the score changed.
I think the "Link from the Past" title was a bit less meta :
The 98 title was fucking clever though!

I believe the score is locked by now but it's OK, it can be the OT2 title ;)

Buying this on wiiu is like Van Gogh painting on toilet paper. Get a Switch!
I couldn't secure one at launch even with all the work I did. My Switch is coming in 3 days and I was always planning on getting it for the Wii U.

I'm playing it today, and nothing is going to stop me.

EDIT: update is almost over! See you all on the other side!

Is there a way to repair weapons? I found a
flaming sword
in a hidden cave and I don't want to lose it. :x

I don't know shit about Zelda lore but there's a cutscene in this game with a major npc saying
"Whether skyward bound, lost in time or shrouded in the darkness of twilight" so I assume this takes place after Twilight Princess?

I also found a stone tablet referencing Princess Ruto from OOT (in this game she's a Zora princess from long, long ago.

Thanks man!
Surprised there isn't a more definite answer available yet.

The graphics look really bland at far distances, but they did a good job of mellowing it out with the colorful haze.

But OMG is this game so fun to play.

The controls are hard to get used to, though. So much switching and inventory management.

I don't feel the world empty at all, even at the summit of a mountain you can find Korok seed or goat. Of course a villagers will not be there. I just unlocked second village after cleaned all zone 1 village, damn those twin peak shrine, I will remember them, lol.

The only back lash we will have if it's people expect Nintendo holding their hand while exploring otherwise when you stick to storyline, you won't feel alone since you meed often npcs.

Anyway, if you want to get lost, don't stick to the road and go explore, you will have plenty to do in that wilderness, hunting enemies, food, find Korok, find shrines, towers seeds and farm mats. Those lands ain't barren, plenty to do in them. You will have new "systems" to use all of those mats that will be unlocked little by little.

Just play the game people and stop worrying, this game is solid.
Unless you look for a narrative story witth choices, better play Witch 3 instead.
This game is for adventurers.
(I'm not talking to the guy I quoted but the people on the fence).

My Amazon delivery has been delayed until Monday, and I can't cancel because I bought it in a £10 off £50 promotion :(

No button mapping/control scheme configuration whatsoever?

Just swapping the jump button and some camera options.

You have to hold down right on the d-pad to cycle through melee weapons after you've hit Y. You have to do the same for bows with R, and you use R and left for arrow types. You hold down left to cycle with shields.

And when your weapon inventory is full, you have to pause and drop something to pick up a new weapon.

Kinda clunky. Weird because the rest of the UI is intuitive

Major flaw with this game (and Switch) is that I'm now working half asleep because I couldn't get myself to stop playing last night. I exited my living room and went to bed to sleep but on my journey to get some rest I committed the ultimate sin... I brought my Switch with me!

Well the hopes of platinum Nioh went out the window since i get both this game for Wii U and Horizon Zero Dawn today. Not enough weekend, too much games. #sadface

Sounds weird, to say the least.

Hopefully it is something I can get used to. If not, I wonder if there are any homebrow apps that'd make custom button mappings possible, or cheats or something lol

Amazing OP!

Quick question for those that have the game.. How's the music in this game.. Is it epic like twilight princess, windwaker, skyward sword, etc and how many tracks are on the special edition soundtrack?

The soundtrack in this game is one of the main things I'm worried about..

Early days but I actually think I prefer playing this in handheld mode. The screen is good and the difference in IQ even compared to my relatively small 42inch Plasma is astronomical. It honestly feels like night and day. Probably doesn't help that I'm coming off playing Horizon at 4K.

Throwing the weapon you don't want is faster.

Ah, thanks! I'm still blocking Zelda videos now that I think about it, no wonder I couldn't find anything.
I'm curious how people will justify this dlc. $20 for this is an insult. I know that 2 proper dlc are on the way, but for now this is a scam.

Hah, i walked half an hour late when the stores started selling them and when i got there out of 40 units they had sold 4, though you couldn't pre-order any.

I keep asking this to everyone and I never get a straight answer from who's playing lol, but I'll not surrender: without any spoiler, is the story good or not? Nintendo made me believe this was the most cinematic Zelda ever but reading reviews and impressions it seems as if the story actually takes a back seat compared to any 3d zelda that came before it.

How do you even cook food? It wasn't explained i'm sure...

Be near a pot with fire, go into your inventory and grab ingredient, you can hold until 5.Leave the UI, you should've an option to cook.

I only advanced to second village (after playing 20+ hours) so I can't reply to you.

Hm, the way I look at it I'm pretty hopeful it's going to be worth it with the two proper expansions, especially dlc pack 2, while the chest stuff is day one enticement trite. I'd pay 20 bucks for a new dungeon and story stuff alone y'know?

Because yeah, those items do look absolutely worthless. Which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned really, but they might as well have skipped the chests. I was honestly worried it was going to be gamebreaking nonsense though.

It's here. The install was easy and fast, the OS update and Zelda update took mere minutes. Going to start playing now!

Just give it to me straight: does the name
King Rhoam/Roam mean anything in regards to spoilers? Saw a post on the r/NintendoSwitch subreddit where someone said an old guy standing in line looked like "King Rhoam". My first thought was the old guy at the beginning of the game as I remembered someone saying his real identity was surprising. Maybe it was an article. I could be wrong about that. If all of this is nothing, tell me it's nothing. If I've been spoiled, let me know.

There's an interesting exchange in the comments of kotaku's review...

kotaku commenter said:
Jason, could you comment at all on why this is fundamentally different from other open world games? You climb towers to reveal the map, you come across enemies and enemy encampments that you need to come up with an approach for, you find special areas, etc.

I think it’s almost certainly reductive to just say “because it has Zelda in the title” as an explanation, but I feel like I’m not getting it. A lot of these mechanics sound very similar to things that many reviewers have been saying are getting old or formulaic. What makes this different for you?

Jason Schreier said:
Other open-world games tend to be more about potential than they are about delivery. The promise of what you’ll find is more exciting than what you actually find. The promise that you can do anything is more exciting than what you can actually do. Breath of the Wild, on the other hand, has both potential and delivery. There’s a certain feedback loop to the game: You’ll see something, go after it, and know that you’re going to find something interesting when you get there. Not just another cave full of Draugr.

Jason's reply is basically "because it has Zelda in the title."

I've noticed a lot reviewers when pressed haven't been able to really satisfactorily answer this question, either.

Hold the ingredients in your hands and drop them into one of those.. I dunno what to call them, like stone wok pans I guess

Ok, thanks i'll give it a go. I don't mind the game not telling me how to do things, but that mechanic needed some explanation.

Question very early on.

The old man ( think that's his name)
said he'll give my his glider if I find him some treasure by clearing the temples. How many are there exactly in the region you start up? I think I marked 4 or 5

There is no way that so many different publications would rate this so highly if thats all there was to it. You must be incredibly naive to believe that. There is a lot more to it but reviewers are leaving it to players to find out, thats the aspect of the game that makes it so wonderful.

Welp, time to return everything I guess.
