Gamexplain Explains the Joy-Con Desyncing Problem

Not saying anything already caused them bad publicity. Don't really see any harm saying "we are working on it" especially if they actually could fix it day 1.

An official statement from Nintendo would probably reach a lot more people than the few media outlets that reported it, which I think they want to avoid (or it's actually still not fixed).

I don't see the bad publicity in "Our day 1 patch fixed the connectivity issues reported in some of the reviews for Switch".

If they didn't solve it yet, then yeah, that would justify the silence.

I think that'd be best too, but Nintendo in particular doesn't like admitting when they have problems.

Eurogamer already tested again their joycons.

From what I understand, you download the update, and it installs, and then reboots the Switch. Then, you need to manually restart the Switch again, and it installs the update to the JoyCons from there.

Eurogamer's language in their update implies they downloaded the update, installed, and rebooted, but did not do the additional extra reboot to update the JoyCon firmware, and they've been avoiding the question of "Ok but did you restart it again after it installed" on Twitter.

Not exactly.

Gamexplain did it and the left joycon is pretty much the same. It wasn't any better for Andre. Once he puts his hand in front of the left joycon it was losing signal. He's 10 feet away from his system. With nothing blocking the way from the joycon to the Switch there was no problem.

Yeah, so much for that then.

DF and GX report the same issues even after the update.

Man.... it seems like the problem got worse in his specific case. Maybe this would be tolerable if you were able to lay your hands in your lap and play but man, this is so disappointing.

On their Youtube video:
GameXplain
I restarted like 3 times and did a complete shut down twice

So the "second reboot" theory doesn't hold anymore... Sounds like for some people, the patch won't solve the problem at all.

Except Apple actually COMMUNICATED, making this infinitely more annoying.

As much as i want Nintendo to communicate on this issue, please not another "you're holding it wrong". The way Apple communicated was just downplaying the issue and showing how all other phones also lose signal.

Apple talked 3 weeks or so after launch.

Nope. Here's a timeline: http://www.pcworld.com/article/201297/apples_iphone_4_antenna_gate_timeline.html

The infamous You're holding it wrong gaff happened on launch day when the issue first became known: https://www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/apple-responds-over-iphone-4-reception-issues-youre-holding-th/

While it was a shit response, it was an immediate response. That was June 26th.

On July 2nd, just six days later, they released an open letter addressing the problem: http://www.pcworld.com/article/200345/Apple_Open_Letter_Tackles_iPhone_4_Antenna_Troubles.html

I stand corrected as I just had the Steve Jobs keynote in mind, but you can see all the communication happened after the product was launched. Today is still -1 to 0 for Switch, depending on region.

And man, you wouldn't believe the amount of shit Nintendo would get if it came public that, say, Reggie, sent an email to a costumer complaining about the left Joycon having issues saying "just avoid holding it that way".

Regardless, if the issue is significant in the wild, I think Nintendo will be forced to respond. I'm curious to try it out.

GameXplain and Eurogamer are still able to replicate the problem with obstruction, but many of the reports initially had nothing to do with obstruction, just distance. Eurogamer seemingly never had an issue with distance while the first mention of this was a guy playing completely normally a little over 6 feet away, so the distance + obstruction problem might be a built in, inherent limitation.

While the pure distance bug may have been fixed. Some clarification from Nintendo would really, really help alleviate all of this confusion.

But when I pick up my switch in 5 hours I'm gonna lose all interest in this for a while.

But technically it has not launched yet.

My SO and I will both get our Switch tomorrow, I'll try to test it on both with and without the update and see what results i get. In the event that the results differ from the gamexplain video I'll report back.

The.... switch isn't out yet.

Not really expecting any communication on the matter, either way, just saying.

It probably won't. Placebo is a strange thing, but given how rare this issue is inside 10ft in the first place it's probably the explanation. Though it doesn't explain the gamefaqs user... gamefaqs gonna gamefaqs I guess.

Received the Switch this afternoon from amazon, and between me and the Boyfriend we have played at least 4 to 5 hours of Zelda without any issue.

I didn't particularly try to cause some problems, and played normally on the couch about two to three meters away from the tv and the docked console. I played with the joycons in the grip, and also with the separated joycons in each hand and never had syncing issues.

Also i didn't lick the console or put the controllers in my butt to see what would happen - maybe later.

I seriously don't know what part of this is based on truth or lie.

I spent a good while intentionally trying to obstruct the signal from my joycons and I too could not duplicate the issue. What a relief, for me personally.

my couch is roughly 10 ft from the tv and I can confirm when I obstruct the left joy-con it stops working altogether. This is after I updated with the controllers on the switch and rebooted twice.

This is a huge issue for me with my setup, only 8 feet away but my controllers don't have direct line of sight to the Switch and it causes major problems. Unable to play Zelda on my PC monitor or TV right now. Luckily I have a pro controller coming on Monday but I guess I'll have to play in handheld mode until then.

I jabbed both joycons into my back, stood 15 feet away from the Switch, and proceeded to play bomberman as normal. I will update if the connectivity goes south as time goes on.

This sort of thing is exactly what I was afraid of.
I play mainly on my pc monitor while my consoles are placed near the tv so the joycons wouldn't have a clear line of sight to the Switch.
They joycons shouldn't need a straight line of sight to the console in order to work, I've never had any issues with my PS4 controller and it never has a clear line of sight to the PS4.

The update fixed it for me. I only lose signal if I go really far from the Switch.
Either I got lucky or some people aren't actually restarting (hold home button, power options, restart), although I know this has been discussed.

Yep, this is pretty much my exact setup. Switch is near TV but I have a splitter so I can have it up on both the TV and/or my PC monitor via capture card. Moving my Switch around closer to my TV/PC lets me play it on TV but still can't play on PC monitor without sync issues.

Restarted multiple times after update (with controllers attached). Even tried a full power off and back on. Problem not solved.

As seen in this breakdown, the problem with the left joycon was that the antenna is positioned in the middle of the device which allows your hands to block the signals. This problem doesn't exist for the right joycon because it's positioned at the top of the device.

It's more of a hardware design issue than a software issue I think.

Well that's not good. I wonder what Nintendo's going to do. They may have to make a new version and do a replacement program.

If this is indeed the cause of he connectivity issue I sure hope Nintendo does a redesign quickly and not just stay quiet and hope the majority won't notice.

Damn, that sucks. Odd that it fixes the problem for only some people.

Where are the antennas in this picture? You're not talking about the square metal pieces, are you? Pretty sure those are the backs of the analog joysticks. Also, take not that the blue Joy-Con in this picture looks to be the right one (based on the location of the analog stick, that it has the IR slot on the bottom and that the front of the controls, where the and sticks and buttons are, are facing down), meaning it's not the standard Neon that comes with the console. Not saying you're assessment is wrong about the location of the antennas since I don't know what you're referencing exactly but I just wanted to point out the particularities about this picture since they'll definitely affect how one analyses the innards of the controllers.
That being said... Man, I hope this doesn't turn out to be a hardware issue that can't be remedied by a software update of some sort. Ain't got no time for that. 😠
