The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT| A Link from the Past

This is the Zelda game I've been waiting for for more than a decade.

I've always been a fan of Link and the idea of Zelda games but never really been able to get into the 3D Zelda games. I played Link to the Past on the Gameboy but at 21 I wasn't the right age to play Ocarina of Time. Twilight Princess has always been in my backlog. I disliked Skyward Sword, absolutely hated the art direction which I couldn't get past. The characters were ridiculous. I mean...really? Annoying music, bad graphics, didn't like the gameplay. I've thought most Zelda games are overrated, favourite game of all time is The Witcher 3.

This, though, this is fantastic. I avoided most of the videos beforehand either because I wasn't that interested or I didn't want to be spoiled. But it's joy to play, it looks fantastic for a Wii U game, the art style is surprisingly good, the gameplay is really fun, the world is compelling. I could see it getting repetitive if it stays like this the whole time, but for the first time I'm really liking a Zelda game. I've always wanted a realistic Zelda game with good graphics, but this is it's own thing in the best way.

Very happy to own a Wii U now. After this I'll have Horizon which will blow me away with its graphics.

Just started this and holy shit is the frame rate atrocious in some areas. Wow. Loving everything eksem

Does anyone else have trouble with accidentally clicking the left stick and crouching in the middle of battle (playing on the Switch)? It happens to me often enough to frustrate me and I purposefully avoid trying to do backflips now.

I was doing that early on but not anymore. For the first 3 hours the entire control scheme was a tough learning curve. I was constantly dropping bombs instead of throwing them, bringing up the menu instead of the map, etc.

Really digging the captured memories stuff. I know it'll pop up as I go further into the game but I want them all right now!

Have begun to regain some memories. The path to the first one though!

Right in front of goddamn Hyrule castle, meaning you have to make your way through a Guardian Rave to get it.

That was nerve-wracking. I fast traveled right the hell out of there upon obtaining it. Nintendo got me fucked up on that.

They are puzzles. They're also toys. What you figure out is interaction, and it's fun. The gyro controls are good, and it have a level of interactivity you don't get with traditional controls.

Some shrines are like this, where you use your controller as the interaction tool:

I find it all fun.

Yep, play with those puzzles all the time. I hate them and I love them, they're quite cruel by nature though and are easy to frustrate people. I remember the first time I tried one of those I wanted to break the damn thing in half. The level of fine motor skills demanded is much higher than what people are used to. Adding in a control method that's not particularly popular and you can get a lot of frustration.

I need a tip on how to get the blue flame to the lab please?

Light torch with blue flame, walk it on over to the lab. You can light the stone lanterns that are all over so you don't have to go all the way back if you need to put away your torch or it starts raining or whatever.

Yeah I'm getting used to it to.
Except for that last death when I forgot to unequip the bomb arrow, hit the wrong button and smoked myself. Oops.

No, because it talks about Twilight Princess (which is on the Child timeline) as if it was another world.

See, I read it as if they're describing the Twilight Realm ("sealing the demon king in the world (the Twilight Realm) where the hero fought the shadow beasts". With that said, I can see how it can be interpreted as meaning an alternate dimension of sorts where TP happened.

Did I screw up or some kind of glitch? I used the smash link amiibo but don't think I saw Epona. Is it gone forever now?

This feels so special to me. It's almost capturing the same sense of wonder that I got playing EverQuest for the first time back in 1999. The completely open-ended nature and feeling of raw potential really compels me to just keep playing and checking things out.

Hard to believe that this is part of the same Zelda series that has become infamous for overbearing tutorials as of late.

Me too! I thought of Everquest right away and the feeling I had, complete immersion, getting lost in a world, creating my own fun and memories. As you said, they definitely share that raw potential. I love it. What a massive success for Nintendo.

For people who were asking if there're weapons we can repair (read at your own risk):
Yes, you can.
At Zora domain, I found a blacksmith who will repair 2 specific weapons.
You can unlock him after dungeon.

I was doing that when i decided to go into the castle to check if there is a memory inside. I ended up beating the game lmao

Okay, this is becoming fucking ridiculous. There is something *so* incredibly buggy with the blood moons.

Aside from just being a dumb thing in general -- yanking you away and resetting any battle or activity you may be in the middle of to show you a cutscene you've seen already -- It's also BUGGY.

It frequently happens back to back. Like two minutes apart. I literally just had it happen 3 times in a row. it happened twice within less than a few minutes (no exaggeration) and then I went and fought a hinox and it happened during the battle when he was about to die and reset the whole fight.

I also had it happen while I was doing a torch relay yesterday and it put my fucking torch out.

Seriously this is so fucking broken, bugged and ill conceived I don't even have words for it. How did this get into retail when the game was in development for fucking 10 years?

I wouldn't make a big deal of it if it was an isolated incident where the bloodmoon harassed me or ruined something I was doing, but it happens *over and over and over*.

Are there any other clothes with cold resistance besides the warm doublet? I'm in an area where the warm doublet isn't protecting me from cold damage/

So are there clothes with better cold resistance than the warm doublet?

Hmm that's odd. I've been playing for about 25 hours now and have only seen the blood moon 3 times.

On a more serious note, I feel that after the first dungeon, it's a bit like... going through the motions. There's no mystery or agency because everything is told upfront. I feel it was a mistake to have the game take place 100 years later. They could have used the events from 100 years ago as the main plot and retain some mystery. The fact that you know who the antagonist is (Ganon), and where he resides, takes me out of it. I hope there are some twists to it, because so far it makes no sense to have Link lose all his memory.

The world is vast and full of secrets, but without some kind of story pull, it just feels... shallow.

The game would have been much stronger if players had to piece the background story together via hints scattered throughout the land.

It's five years, and we should know, Jobbs, how fixing some seemingly unrelated bug somewhere in code causes issues elsewhere. (shrug)

Did anyone actually fight and defeat ? I just stealthed through they area after trying to beat him a few times. He's got a lot of health and takes almost all my hearts in one hit!

I agree in theory, but the controls were just so bad that they made the whole experience awful.

We should, but they should know the whole thing is a buggy broken obnoxious mess before shipping it.. I mean it's not like they've been testing the game for years

Those centaur looking things? Yeah, can't beat those. There is even more out in the wild.

I really like the shrine puzzles where the puzzle/activity is getting to the shrine. Something is satisfying about stumbling on it in the open world and figuring it out rather than "this is puzzle room and you must solve puzzle"

Hmm that's odd. I've been playing for about 25 hours now and have only seen the blood moon 3 times.

I've literally seen dozens in the last two days. They happen all. the. time. Maybe my particular save is buggy for some reason, I don't know, but they happen so often and in such rapid succession it's unbelievable

I shouldn't spoil myself buuuut, sod it, cheers!

The region of Hyrule just slightly northwest of the castle within the Great Forest of Hyrule

do you mean the main castle that is taken over by Ganon or the plateau where you start tgetting game

Hey I had a few questions for those farther in. Is there a max hearts/stamina? And if so I'm guessing its 20 hearts but I was wondering how many stamina bars you could get. I'm going for 100% so I'm probably going to get them both maxed.

I had two in ~20 hours. Definitely sounds like a bug!

Must be. I've only seen like 3 in my 25 hours of playtime so far.

While they are a bit frustrating they work exactly like those toys do and I like it. If you can't solve them properly though you can break from the intended method and cheat the system. I've found a number of ways you can just by-pass the whole ball puzzle. You just have to observe and think about it.

Dude I've had 3 in the last 10 minutes I played, and 5 today so far -- in like 4 hours playing

If they didn't interrupt what I'm doing it wouldn't be as big of a deal. It's actually ruining the game for me

I"m pretty sure it is a huge bug. I had 3 in one night and a quest became broken. I reloaded an old save and reset the game and it fixed it. But I'm not sure if you kept going that it permanently glitches out the file.
