Yeah, calling it Trumpcare is one of the dumbest things you can possibly do when covering this.

Even if you're just trying to be an unbiased reporter and not doing it for political reasons, you'd call it Ryancare because it is clearly Paul Ryan's baby. All Trump did was endorse it.

But to be fair. If this ever passed the House and Senate (it won't) and Trump did sign it. Then he does own it.

So with all the talk of how terrible this is, and Obamacare is still pretty bad for a large group of people.

Can Obamacare be fixed? Is it really this hard to find a universal healthcare solution in this country?

I find it sad that other first world countries has a good healthcare system in place and we're struggling to even implement one.
Obamacare can be fixed. Take the premium tax credit provision from republicancare and include it in Obamacare. Whichever is greater you get to use. This would help the under 40 afford health insurance while keep the best provisions in place

Bannon/Breitbart did say they wanted Ryan out as speaker by March. I thought maybe they cooled on that for the time being but maybe not.

Breitbart is about to go to war against this healthcare bill. Will be relentless and ugly.

Bannon has wanted Ryan's head for years. I wonder if this was always his plan? Was this a trap for Ryan?

I think I maybe just forgot how spectacularly bad at politics Paul Ryan is. He is an empty haircut from Wisconsin that has failed his way up.

This is just hilarious. He must really hate him, because I can't really think of a worse tactical move than castrating the one guy that can unite people and get your plan done. Especially when that one guy has been bootlicking the way he's been.

This'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Two things have been constant at Breitbart over the years:

1. The racism
2. They fucking hate Paul Ryan

Remember it was Breitbart that spearheaded the movement that got Eric Cantor primaried.

Eh. I honestly don't think Ryan can do shit and it shows with him revealing this bill that doesn't have a chance to get passed and isn't even popular among the GOP. He's just not a good speaker.

Bannon has no love for the GOP. He's openly said they need to be crushed as well. Trump fucked up by endorsing this bill earlier. I can only imagine we'll see him have a change of heart after this Brietbart/Bannon shit.

I'm guessing they want Scalise then?

As if there aren't already enough KKK adjacent republicans in the most powerful positions of government.

If Ryan can't do shit then what makes them think anyone else as speaker could? Seriously what's their plan here because if Obamacare just exists as-is come 2018 the Republicans primaries are going to be chaos. Who knows what makes it out of that election and who sits home. They could be facing an easy house win by the Dems at that point.

That and Trump endorsing the fucking bill was insane. You'd think he'd tip him off of the gameplan if that was indeed the gameplan. Now if they tank Ryan and the GOP this whole thing looks ridiculously bad.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/gops-new-plan-to-repeal-obamacare-dare-fellow-republicans-to-block-effort-1488154291

WASHINGTON—Republican leaders are betting that the only way for Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act is to set a bill in motion and gamble that fellow GOP lawmakers won’t dare to block it.

Party leaders are poised to act on the strategy as early as this week, after it has become obvious they can’t craft a proposal that will carry an easy majority in either chamber. Lawmakers return to Washington Monday after a week of raucous town halls in their districts that amplified pressure on Republicans to forge ahead with their health-care plans.

Republican leaders pursuing the “now or never” approach see it as their best chance to break through irreconcilable demands by Republican centrists and conservatives over issues ranging from tax credits to the future of Medicaid.

The new strategy means the health-care law could be overhauled in three precarious steps—reflecting the difficulties of concurrently repealing and replacing the law, as President Donald Trump had sought.

Republicans can afford to lose no more than two GOP votes in the Senate and 22 in the House, assuming they get no support from Democrats. That means any GOP faction could torpedo the repeal effort by withholding its support—and members of each have threatened as much.

“You’re a Republican, you’ve been running to repeal Obamacare, they put a repeal bill in front of you... Are you going to be the Republican senator who prevents Obamacare repeal from being sent to a Republican president who is willing to sign it?” said Doug Badger, a longtime Republican leadership health policy adviser.

Mr. Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) are staking almost everything on this bet, because their entire domestic policy agenda, including a highly prized tax overhaul, rests on the health-care maneuver paying off first.

This is all part of Paul Ryan's plan. Rush the bill through and dare Republicans to oppose it. This gamble is going to fail bad.

They'd probably want it more to get a white supremacist or someone compromised by russians the role of Speaker. Obamacare would be a tool to get someone else the seat, not the endgame.

Ryan is useful for how big of a coward he is, but they would prefer a loyalist.

This current display of brinkmanship and stupidity flowing from the Republicans makes me wonder how anyone could ever look at them and see a cohesive party that cooperates with one another. They've been dysfunctional for the better part of a decade.

They are defined, and continue to be defined, by failing to service the healthcare needs of their constituents.

Dems just need a singular message on this issue. Millions will lose insurance, your premiums will go up etc. Then you attack the GOP for dysfunction and how after all this time THIS is the bill they come up with.

What are we expecting? The Republicans to bite the bullet and pass this shit that will surely get them kicked out of office in the next few elections? Or cut the Republican President out by the knees and turn him into a lame duck?

They are in such a shit position because A lot on the right are mad it's doesn't go far enough and many on the right know they can't really repeal Obamacare because their constituents will hold them to the fucking fire.

This Bill is not popular. If Trump wants to tie his shitty name to it. So be it. Many on the right called this Obamacare 2.0 or Obamacare lite. And you got Trump digging in and putting his weight behind this.

What's the reason for #2? I'm genuinely confused. Not like Ryan hasn't been as spineless as his fellow Republicans against Trump.

@realDonaldTrump

I feel sure that my friend @RandPaul will come along with the new and great health care program because he knows Obamacare is a disaster!

Good lord, he's staking his (non existent) political capitol on a DOA healthcare plan that cannot pass. It's like he's operating in a bizzaro world where he's doing the exact opposite of what Obama did, and losing every step of the way.

Why marry this bill? Why not publicly demand Ryan rewrite parts of it, or ask him to work directly with the WH to come up with a more comprehensive draft that includes the things Trump actually campaigned on. He's jumping into a battle for no reason other than "to win." And he's not going to win.

he doesn't care about fixing or actually helping people. just winning.

There is a fight for the soul of the GOP. Ever since this book:

Ryan, Cantor, and McCarthy have had a target on their backs. Cantor is gone, McCarthy is skulking in the shadows and Ryan is constantly under fire.

Here is a decent overview of the Bannon/Ryan dynamic. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/11/why-steve-bannon-hates-paul-ryan.html

Ryan thinks job #1 in America is to empower corporations and the rich. He makes all of his interns read Atlas Shrugged. Bannon thinks that job #1 in America is to protect white identity and Western European culture. He thinks that Ryan is selling out the US to globalist corporate interests.

Bannon wants to reform the GOP. He wants to move them away from policies based on money and taxes and shift them to policies based on race and identity. Ryan wants to keep the status quo and Bannon wants to blow it all up.

I interpreted that tweet as the opposite. He's basically backing any plan Rand Paul comes up with while simultaneously distancing himself from Paul Ryan's plan.

Nah. Trump praised this earlier. Rand was very public in saying this would fail. Trump is just being Trump and thinking rand will jump on board. Don't know why Trump is gung ho about this when it has little support

He's mocking Rand Paul and trying to bully him into it. But we should all remember that Paul was just reelected in 2016.

Were Trump an actual politician I would say he's trying to imply he thinks the Senate will amend the bill in a way that makes it much better, but then it has to go through the House again where anything that would "fix" it will face the same problem--Democrats will still hate it and the Freedom Caucus will still think it doesn't go far enough. But since he's not an actual politician, I think he's just a moron trying to play both sides in an attempt to distance himself from the inevitable failure of this awful bill.

Thanks for the rundown and the resources! I will make this a little project over the weekend then to read about this and Legacy of Ashes.

I mean, he's owning it. It's Trumpcare. I don't see any reason not to tie it to him. Calling it Obamacare instead of Democare didn't suddenly absolve 2010 Democrats of responsibilities of passing it.

Obama wasn't impeached, and is still in good standing with the dems. Can't say that'll be the same outcome with Trump.

Something about that tweet is almost cute. He's trying to perform the president's role of cajoling Congress but it's so clumsy and the issues seem beyond his comprehension .
