Guardians pretty easy now as long as you have
the Master Sword.
Plus go for the legs, they drop even more ancient materials. Plus they get stunned as well and can't move.
 
Yeah, I was usually bombs when I hear from a tip or an NPC about bombs being used on ore to get materials and I tried a few times and just saw the materials flying off into the air somewhere. Sometimes, it was close by. Other times, it flew way off into the distance and I wouldn't be able to find it. Sucks. I've been generally using weak spears and swords to break to ore so I don't have it flying everywhere.

I can't wait for me to get out of college and tackle my first dungeon later today. Feels weird to be doing my first dungeon after so much lollygagging and exploring, going after nearby towers and shrines and checking for Korok Seeds where ever I go. Exploring definitely reminds me of the Xenoblade games a bit and how I much I loved that aspect of those games.
 
Skyrim - 15 hours and quit, never played it again

GTA V - 13 hours and quit


Xenoblade X - 18 hours and quit

Breath of the Wild - 30 hours and only done one dungeon and not burnt out at all. What's that different that makes me love this open world when I generally get so bored?



Almost to my second dungeon. What is consensus on these inclusions. Perfect amount for the game, should have been more? Should of had less shrines?

I'm guessing it's probably because you're pretty much pacing yourself due to the lack of a strong structure and there's so many interesting things to do in game on your own volition. There's far less gating due to stats and levels and such systems.

For me one of the big reasons is that I don't have to read a bunch of text that I ultimately don't care about. Even Witcher 3 with its great sidequests did wear thin on me after a while and I quit the game halfway. Also the charming NPCs actually make me want to finish sidequests for them even though they're not inherently any less tedious than sidequests in other games. All the kids in this game are great. It helps that there's so fewer of them around compared to other games too.
 
Best place to find one handed swords?
Desert boss seems to require them for shield and I'm breaking them like crazy.
. I need to load up.
 
Cool things I've noticed.

1.
Hitting a blue chuchu with an element gives you that element version of the chuchu jelly.

2.
Giving dogs 3 meats will have them lead you to a chest

An adventurer's gotta be prepared :)

Plus it came in really handy during the ancient tech lab side quests.

The labs have torches inside them lol.
 
At which point should I stop fearing the Guardians and start counter-attacking them? Is there a number of hearts I should have? Availability of
Ancient arrows, shield or other gear
Or should Injust start practicing the perfect block and go for it?

(I have 7 hearts and
the Mipha healing power
as well as 'armor' in the 15-range and some weapons in the 20-25 range, but only one of the aforementioned arrows.)
I started braving them last night. For reference, I have six hearts and my weapons are between 20 and 50 attack power. I have completed no dungeons but around 25 shrines and four towers.

Start by practicing on ones lodged in the ground. There are two at the Eastern Abbey on the Plateau, by the shrine. There is also one outside Fort Hateno. Save right before engaging with them; that way you can just reload if you die.

Learn to parry the laser with your shield. Hit A just as the Guardian eye turns blue, moments before it unleashes its attack. On weaker Guardians that reflected attack will defeat them immediately. I'm still finetuning my timing and losing the occasional shield or even life, but it's certainly helped me fear them less. I've even begun taking on moving Guardians now.

It also helps to have
Guardian weapons, such as the sword, spear and axe. They're all incredibly effective against Guardians. Stronger Guardians won't die from one reflected laser so combat will get the job done.

If you do decide to fight rather than shield, an arrow to the eye will halt a Guardian's imminent laser. Bomb arrows work better than normal arrows, though I haven't tried fire, ice or electric arrows on them.
 
So is there a thread dedicated to figuring out where the hell Breath of the Wild fits in the Zelda timeline (because I'm having a really hard time coming up with anything)? It almost seems like they wanted to re-make Zelda 1 and reboot the timeline.


Some reasons I think it could be a total reboot of the timeline. Nintendo just tossed in tons of Zelda lore, themes, characters, names into this game without any care of continuity:
  • Rito and Zoras are coexisting (traditional canon Rito evolve from Zoras)
  • We see Korok's who supposedly evolve from the Kokiri but have no evidence of the latter
  • Temple of Time, Kakariko Village (Sheikah stronghold), and way too many other mentions of OoT
  • Goddess Statue from Skyward Sword in the Temple of Time
  • ALL mentions of the "hero" are in relation to Link we control.
 
I had a theory that breath of the wild is not in any specific timeline but rather that it is the inevitable conclusion of all the time lines.

It's why there are references to nearly every single zelda game in it.

It's why the geography doesn't really add up perfectly with any of the games.

It's also why most of the events referenced directly in it are from the zelda games that take place in all timelines (with the reference to TP being the only one screwing things up)

Think about how weak the master sword is in this game, it might be nearing the end of its purpose. Think about how hard it is for zelda to make a connection to the goddess, maybe because the people of hyrule are moving on from needing the gods? And to top it off this might be the first time where the objective wasn't just to seal or defeat ganon but rather to annihilate.

Also, after SS, Zelda is supposed to be the Goddess reborn remember. But much like Link can and has been defeated by Ganon even though he is the hero of time/legend/wind/twilight, Zelda is not able to unlock her powers until it is a bit too late.

Really only some of the main references are for things like OoT and WW and TP. The fact the Zora and Rito are there, the Korok, references to Ganondorf Dragmire being a Gerudo, etc. Who knows.
 
Just came across a monster and its kid that are so amazed and excited by the sight of an ancient guardian stone jumping up and down trying to figure out what it is. So adorable. Couldn't bring my self to kill them.

I refuse to believe most other reputable sources want to be seen the same as gbatemp, so opencritic choosing to put it in their aggregate when it's such a wildly different score because gbatemp wants to be edgy is baffling

also fam gbatemp is a legit emulator and hacking site

Cant really read the thread because I dont wanna see a spoiler...

But last night I finally beat
Thunderblight Gannon in the Desert Dungeon.
And my god that was some hard ass fucking shit. It really took me like.. 20-25 times. Hes got some really cheap moves towards the end of the fight.

It really made me realize that I do have a complaint with the game. The targeting system is sketchy at best. I felt like I was fighting with the camera alot in that battle in particular. Ill be looking right at the enemy, hit LR, and it will just adjust the camera instead of locking on.

Kind of wish lock on was tied to L3 like Dark Souls.
 
Question about something I saw in the gerudo desert/highlands.
Theres this giant bottomless hole near the yiga clan base. I tried rolling some snowballs into it but it wouldn't work. Is it story related?
 
Just now getting to the
Death Mountain
area. Saw something moving and obscuring the
lava on the mountain from afar
, so I decided to zoom in and see what it was. Discovered that the
Devine Beast was crawling about the mountain
and it was a bit of a "holy shit" moment for me. This game never ceases to surprise and amaze me.
 
Do you know that feeling when you are wandering through a landscape that feels completely fresh to you only to discover already activated Kroks indicating that you have already been there before. I'm truly getting lost :D

And man - I'm just not getting things done! I've started the game today in a city that I discovered yesterday night and booted it up with the thought: alright let's check out this village! But before that let's teleport just quickly to that one spot I wanted to check out earlier - just for a minute. Well, after 5 more hours it just came back to me that I have never entered the village again after that lol.
So let me rephrase it: I'm getting things done, just not the things I originally set out to do :D

You're right about the Zelda thing but there is also a larger willingness to rely on technology (the beasts, guardians, sheikah tech) than there is on relying on the power of the gods in this game. Also I wasn't referring to the gameplay aspect of the master sword I was referring to the fact that it got its ass kicked so hard by ganon that it was in tatters. I guess this technically also happens in the downfall timeline But the way they talk about the master sword here feels like it's not as strong as it once was

I really think it is kinda cool if botw is designed as a natural end point to all the timelines

Putting Guardian weapons and the fire sword on the walls looks amazing.
 
I'm at that part where I have to get the shock arrows in order to fight Ruta (sp?) so I started going up the waterfall and the mountains but now I'm at the top and there's nothing here, I'm confused. :(

This game is fucking insane btw
 
Elephant dungeon was really awesome. I loved the atmosphere and music. It was short but it felt really satisfying to figure out the puzzles.

The boss fight was awesome and if the other boss fights are this cool, I could see them being some of my favorites in the series.

I still feel like I haven't done much at all in the game even though I have so many completed shrines and korok seeds.

I'm also still running into things that surprise me, after 45+ hours of playing.

Ploymus Mountain, right? Once you're at the top, start heading in the direction of the reservoir.
 
I was also so disappointed to find you lose all the items
you find on Eventide Island after you get back your gear. I spent a lot of time rebuilding my inventory there and it's all gone the minute I got my normal inventory back...
 
I picked up a Farosh Scale so I go to the spot to put it, and then I when I got there I didn't have it anymore. What the hell.

Now he won't appear again.
 
There is one shrine with a horrible motion control puzzle. It is horrible on Wii U because of the controls and the camera angle. With better controls and camera it would be easy. It has a ball balancing table. You know the one... The rest of the motion control shrines I've done are fine.
I had no problem at all with that one. I'm playing with the Pro controller though, maybe it's better?

This is me on every session. It took me 3 days to get away from the surroundings of Hateno Village to advance the main quest lol.

...are you in the right mountain top? You'll find a strong enemy on a plateau, you wouldn't be able to miss it.
 
Let's all take a moment to appreciate the high quality NPCs in this game. Almost all of them are full of personality and life. Take notes, Gamefreak and Monolith!!!!

And.... the number of waifu in this game is growing at a fast rate... Especially Paya.... I just bet there's alotta fanart of her waiting to be born. Lol
 
Whoever thought it was a good idea to make the whistle and throwing bananas the same button is an idiot. Goes to throw the banana, Link puts it away and whistles instead, every enemy alerted to your presence. Died so many times until I said F it I am just going to sneak pass them without bananas.

You should go up three waterfalls and get to the very top, there is a giant Lynel beast who shoots shock arrows at you. You can avoid them from a distance and gather those lying around on rocks and trees. You only need 20. Then you go to the very top and glide down to Sidon in the reservoir where the Beast is. But if you look at Toto Lake, there is the Zora helm there. Don't forget to grab it. Very useful.
 
I have a question. When a weapon breaks, it deals 2x damage right? and when you throw a weapon it also deals additional damage? So, if you throw a weapon, and it breaks, does it do even more damage?
