PS4 Update 4.5 is coming tomorrow, details inside

If anybody is thinking about getting an external SSD, I can recommend Samsung T3. Loading times on some games I have tested are vastly improved compared to internal 2TB Firecuda SSHD.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Menu to game: 60s -> 25s
Fast travel: 24s -> 10s

Grand Theft Auto V:
Loading screen to game: 1min 10s -> 48s

Sherlock Holmes: Devil's Daughter:
Menu to game: 30s -> 18s

Yes.

Pro or normal PS4?

I was on beta 2 of 4.5 and still encountered this issue. Super annoying. I'll report if it's still in the final release.

Dangit, thanks for letting me know though.
I thought the dev was told that this firmware update would fix it, so he wasn't going to bother with a patch because it wasn't the game's fault.
If firmware doesn't fix it, he'll pretty much have to I'd imagine. It's pretty annoying having to reboot the ps4 to flush out the memory before putting it into standby after playing every time. Oh well.

Could you describe how this works? If I buy a new Samsung t3 now, is it plug and play? What if ive already downloaded horizon onto my PS4? Do I just move it or redownload it onto the ssd?

Is it seamless in terms of resuming from sleep, leaving the game, switching, etc?

Thanks fam.

Has anyone tried using an microphone via remote play yet? I'm having trouble getting the remote play to recognize both a built-in mic and a headset with a mic.

EDIT: Discovered how to enable mic input. On the remote play overlay via PC/Mac (move mouse) there is a muted microphone symbol in the bottom right. This toggles mute/unmute function for your microphone. Mine works now for both the built-in and headset. It was muted by default. You shouldn't need to change any settings in the PS4 menus.

Holy shit - that's amazing. I have a stock HDD 2TB drive too, so the benefit would be even more pronounced for me correct?

When you first plug it in, it will notify you to format the drive. You can move already installed games back and forth so no redownloading needed. That's why I got the external, I keep many installed games on internal and then move the game I'm currently playing to the SSD. 40GB game takes about 7 minutes to move. You can also change the default installation location if you want to install straight to external.

Everything works like the games were installed on the internal. I don't use rest mode but I tested it with Horizon, resuming the game worked great, I even turned the USB power option off to see if it has any effect and it didn't.

SSHD is usually a bit faster so yes.

I prefer the new streamlined notification section. Annoyed me having to go through all different subsections, now I'm done after a single glance. Downloads are always on top which is great as well.

Yeah just going in to notifications marks everything as read. Can't tell you how much times I've had a rogue notification I couldn't find in the past hidden in some unknown category. Honestly I think making it as simple as possible is their objective. Casual users will benefit the most. Lack of categories and Mark as read will annoy some though.

Can't wait to try an external SSD drive tonight. Hopefully the loadings in Dishonored 2 will be better. (They're not bad but I was playing D1 on PC on SSD and they were instant...)

Is it easy to manage your game's data like "Move on External Drive", etc...?

Well yeah it's faster, it's also more expensive than caviar served on a piece of the constitution

Are external SSDs typically cheaper than internal ones?

I want to get one going with my Pro. Long load times are the devil.

So uh anybody got any suggestions for any external HDDs/SSDs?

And am I boned loading time-wise if I just want to stick to being cheap?

I can't see the point in putting an expensive SSD in there. It's likely that the cheapest SSD you can find, would produce very similar results anyway. Any SSD will do for the PS4.

Buy a cheap 250GB SSD and a drive enclosure. Job done.

The 250GB is $95, which is fairly decent and at 250GB you can swap in at least 3, 4 active full sized games in it. You can always hot swap games in and out of your built in 1TB (Pro) depending on what you're playing then.

I can see this as a decent solution.

It's going to be nice to have so much extra space with this HDD plugged in, but sitting waiting on each game to fully install form the disc is so boring haha my main reason to go digital at this point

Yup, no need for a T3 drive, though it does look cool.

Can't decide on 4, 6, or 8 TB. I have a 4TB for Xbox One. It's just over half full with all of the Games with Gold and backwards compatible games. 4 TB should suffice, but Pro updates and all of the PS+ games might fill it up quick. 8 TB might be overkill.

Sleeping Dogs is so..so wonderful now. Oh my god. Im replaying this shit RIGHT NOW and driving it no longer a chore.

Are the front ports on the ps4 pro 3.0? I have my PSVR plugged into the back USB slot :(

i googled this and a lot of sources say all 3 USB ports on Pro are USB 3.1. Not sure how accurate this is.

The manual says they are USB 3.1 Gen 1 which is essentially a rebranded 3.0 with no additional speed benefits.

I don't know why they made it so confusing when naming the spec.

USB 3.0 has retroactively been renamed “USB 3.1 Gen 1,” and it retains a theoretical transfer rate of 5.0 Gbps.

Someone help out a person with the SSD situation, if I got that 250gb SSD, that would go in the ps4 correct? And then just transfer the games you want to play on it for better load times?

I get limited time to play games anymore so load times are big deal for me.

Nope. Only works on original console.

Is this confirmed? I thought I read during the beta that the drive is account locked like the Xbox and not system locked like the WiiU.

I'll try it myself when I get home, but it will be disappointing if I can't use the same external drive on both of my PS4s.
