The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

Metacritic score for BOTW is now 97 with Jim Sterling's & Slant Magazine's review. Who knew two people had the power to change it. I'm slightly depressed about it TBH. I knew Jim would be the skeptical one, Escapist Zero Punctuation is probably next to make the next low score. Still regardless, I guess his review on the game is well-explained.

It's not the low scores I worried about TBH, it's how others will react to a one point decrease and how they'll use it to diss Zelda. :/

I totally saw this coming. Sterling is someone who tends to be contrarian and hyperbolic in general for attention, and has a vendetta against Nintendo in particular.

Granted, I want to make it clear that I'm not slamming everyone who gives Zelda a less than perfect review (I thought Jeff Gerstmann made some valid criticisms), I'm just saying that Sterling's opinion in particular should be taken with a giant mound of salt.

So what should I be selling and what should I hang onto?

If you need money, the easiest thing to do is farm meat, cook it, then sell it. You do need gems and stones for gear upgrades later in the game, so you might want to hold on to them until you're sure you don't need them.

7/10 is a good score, I can understand people taking off 3 points if they arent a fan of the durability/stamina system and expected more from the dungeons. The game is amazing imo and has sucked me in more than any other game in years but there are aspects of it that could be divisive as the hype fades

So I'm done with the first part of the world. I've gone east and the map didn't disappear for it when i finally went there. How do you get the maps for new areas?

The towers you climb, big orange ones.

Is this something the game communicates poorly? It's one of the first things you do in the game, and yet I've seen a surprising number of people stumped by this. A friend of mine had played through a dungeon and a significant number of memories without unlocking any of the map because he didn't know how.

I've passed a hundred shrines now, finally decided to turn shrine radar back on. I had it off most of the game and forgot about it, honestly I may just turn it off again since scouring the mountains for shrines was so enjoyable.

They do. It took me four hours last night by I found them.

Sadly they don't show up on the map >.<

Took me quite a while too, Selmie gives you a clue though...

Thought so once I saw the tower. Thanks, anyways. It's easy to forget tho.

Anyone feel like giving me a hint on
Divine Beast Vah Ruta
? I activated all terminals but one and I'm not seeing what I need to do to activate the last one. The final terminal I need to activate is the smaller
water gear
.

A nice hint would be great and help me get on my way.

The Lost Woods are pretty damn cool but I somehow managed to make my way through without understanding them at all.

Yea.
First area is easy, follow the torches, but the second area... I think it had to do with the faces on the trees, but I can't tell exactly how it was supposed to work.

Scoured and got one amiibo. Link on the horse. I'm getting so much shit from the wife right now. Game has it's hooks in bad, never even cared about the amiibo end before.

No spoilers regarding what it is but I saw a bright blue light shining from a mountain top. I'm there now but nothing is here. Must I show up at a certain time, full moon or something?

I'm thinking
using Cryonis (the ice rune)
, but that's all I can recall.

I get not thinking this game deserves a 10 but this game is definitely not a 7 lol.

It's actually kind of insulting for a game that instead of playing it safe has taken all kinds of risks and still has so successfully resolved so many of the issues that have plagued open world games in over a decade. To say that all that effort deserves only a 7 is really misguided.

You need a specific rune for that.

Just finished it (twice).

Clocked 79.5h in a week. Wow. Totally didn't notice it got that absurd.

Can't say the game was flawless, there's a lot I'd change about it. Can't say it isn't totally immersive though, I couldn't get enough of the universe.

I'll probably go back and look for all the side quests I left behind. (A lot)

I guess it's not something to worry about.

Anyway, I wanna share my progress so far,
I've really enjoyed the finding the memories of Zelda. The Pikango guy really helps so much without giving much away. Finding these spots on my own is really rewarding. Some of the recent shrines have been really enjoyable. It's been a very joyful experience for me even after 20+ hours.

just gaming in flight

flight attendant asked if that was the new gameboy

i nodded in delight

How disappointed were you when your 90 minutes of Zelda were over? Or was it a short flight?

A certain rune
(Cryonis)
may be applied in a slightly unconventional way.

Best change the title lol

Finally got round to beating
the first Ganon boss
. Amazing its taken this long given how much I've played. (Can't wait to hit 10 days tomorrow and give me time played so far).

I understood the torches puzzle. The second part was like... somehow I made it, lol. But it still felt good.

Lost Woods Solution:
It's the wind direction. It changes whenever there is a rattle sound. If you light a torch just follow the way the fire is pointing.

Thanks guys. I tried using that rune the first go round but my pillar would just shatter. I'll try again thinking outside the box! Thanks.

It's in the same area, not really close, but not too far either.
Ugh I kind of thought the sword pointed me to the direction. Found it now. No wonder I have not seen it earlier. Been blizzard all the time except now. Thanks.

How early did folks go for the Master Sword? After beating the first dungeon, I focused on getting the Sword before diving into the rest of the story quests. And that appears to have been a good decision on my end.

One week in and I finally registered my first horse (it was
the Giant Horse
). Just really hadn't felt like doing it for the longest time because I've been climbing up all of the hills and mountains I could find.

Controlling the horse is awkward, but still feels pretty nice somehow. Great for roads and stuff but I think I'll stick with my own two feet for the most part.

Mind: BLOWN.

Totally didn't understand that part even though I was able to eventually do it lol

How do you get to other parts of Lost Woods though? I wanted to go see Saria Lake, but I couldn't find how to get there.

I got it after my second dungeon. Course that was mostly because I was focused on southern, eastern and western Hyrule

Oh, haha.

I kinda brute forced it by using the torch to set the grass on fire and using the updraft to fly over the void-out triggers.

Once you get to the village you have to talk to the head Korok, he'll give you a quest. You will do 3 trials that leads you to the locations.

I stumbled upon it after one dungeon too and had exactly
enough hearts, after converting ALL of my stamina into hearts. Pretty sweet.

In this day and age it's unbelievable. Not surprising that some late reviews are coming out with a negative opinion. They'd have nothing to gain by just giving the game another 9 or 10. These reviews are all about clicks imo. Of course people can have their opinions and all, but BotW is pretty special and even a very negative outlook can't ignore how much it gets right and how much love and care went into creating it. If you're going to give it a 6 or 7 you better have a flawless record of judging other games the same way if I'm going to take that opinion seriously. That includes not giving games like Fallout 4 or Triforce Heroes a higher score.

You say this and yet, going by the rest of this post, I doubt you mean it. "Flawless record of judging other games". What a strange thing to write, what does that even mean?

Why do you worry about any of these things? Do you not have more important issues in your life?

That sounds harsh but it's a genuine question. Worry about your job, bills, relationship, family, friends... the way you talk about a number associated to a video game is truly baffling.

'Slightly depressed' and 'worried about how others will react it'... you need some perspective on what you're talking about.

so i'm kind of lost here...been playing for a while now, most of it exploring, looking for shrines, and not doing quest stuff

i've had the locked memories quest, with all of the pictures, and I'm not quite sure where to go from there. I think I'm still fairly "low leveled" for lack of a better term, so I'm not sure which areas are safe for me to be going to, or even where to head to progress the story lol

any help here would be appreciated

also, what's the best way to fight the guardians, and similar enemies? they always wreck me haha

lmk if any of this should be in spoilers

I don't understand something about the inventory right now. For example I have the soldier's greaves and Hylian trousers. When I sort them I keep seeing Hylian trousers before the greaves, which is odd because it says 5 for the Hylian trousers and 7 for the greaves. Shouldn't the greaves be considered better defense and thus first?

I'm truly lost and can't get back to the starting area. I don't have many mapped sections yet. The only mapped out part is Faron and that is it really. How do I get back? I can't get the starting area to pull up on the screen.
