Just got back from this movie. I was lukewarm going in, mainly just going to support monsters movies because I want more of them. It was way better than I was expecting.
It was cheesy as hell but in a fun way rather than in an embarrassing way. The team involved are clearly classic monster movie fans. They self aware and they know what you're there for. There's nothing high brow about it but it's just fun.

And THAT AFTER CREDITS SCENE. GHIDORAH REFERENCE. I AM PUMPED. He better show up in a future Godzilla movie or ill be pissed.

What a great looking movie this was, the shot with all the camera panning up with all the choppers heading towards was legit jaw-dropping. The monster fights looked spectacular with them all being set during day, but the last one felt kinda anti-climatic to me. "Kong fights lizards, but now Kong fights.....a bigger lizard!"

The movie is a testament to how damn good an actor Reilly is when you let him do something other than the same old jokes. Seeing him get back to his family at the end almost brought me to tears. It's a good movies with great moments imo. Three out of five stars.

Just came back from this. Gotta be the best monster flick since Cloverfield. Loved it.

And its the most beautiful film I've seen since The Revenant.

And that shit was gory for PG-13 too, good stuff.

Remarkably hollow film. Someone tried to superglue six totally unrelated and basically incompatible movies together here. What a weird mess of terrible dialog, confused ideas, and paper thin characters. Tencent's own Chinese Girl Delivering Lines Phonetically (tm) is supposed to be the biologist of the team, but she offers zero insight into or even interest in all the crazy exotic life? Violence was making crazy swings from distressingly nihilistic to Cool Guy Valiant Heroism. Felt like that scene in Jurassic World, where the babysitter gets brutally murdered for no good reason but extended out for an hour. Movie just could not settle on a tone.

Pretty much my exact feelings on the movie. Half the characters exist solely to die. The rest have paper thin motivations and arcs at best.

Like when they tried to play up the guy sacrificing himself as this big emotional moment. Who the fuck was that guy again? Dude had one throwaway line (from another character even) mentioning that he was homeless and that was it. That scene would have been much more powerful if the movie had actually built up to it - established his lack of a life back home. And even then, Sam Jackson's defining character trait (at least at the beginning, until it's abandoned) is that he ALSO prefers life in the military to life at home.

Basically, the action is fun, but the characters and writing are a mess.

Great monster movie I felt. What I like is it didn't tiptoe around the monsters. Bam, monsters. The action was fantastic too.

This film didn't really work for me. All the monster stuff was cool, all the human parts were bad, all in all I wasn't bored I guess, but not something I'll want to rewatch.

Yo that dude's death was nuts. Like he's this complete nothing of a "character" who takes a shot at doing a noble, memorable thing, and then the movie literally sweeps him aside as irrelevant. Which would be fine if the movie wanted to be some fatalistic, hopeless "humans are nothing in the face of God" kind of thing, but it definitely isn't that in other places. Like if we just did the synopsis of that dude's life, it's a really cynical story.

whats the
point of them being recruited by monarch if
this movie takes place like 50 years ago and
theyll never show up again

unless king krong vs godzilla happens ... in the past??!!

Not so sure about this. John C Reilly mentions in passing that some people on the island don't seem to age. I wouldn't be surprised if they put that in there so they can bring back some of the cast from this for future films. Would be cool because while they aren't given much to work with they are okay here and showed a bit more promise than ATJ and Olsen in Godzilla.

How was that part of Sam's character abandoned? That's pretty much his entire motivation
for pursuing Kong. It's made pretty obvious that it's not really about losing his men, but that he's unhinged and lives to fight. He won't turn away the opportunity to fight or go to war because it's all he knows now, and he pursues it until it's his undoing.

Watched it and enjoyed it. I remember liking Peter Jackson's more, but it's been really long since I've seen that.

Honestly would like more solo King Kong movies, but looking forward to God v King anyway.

Saw it this past Sunday and as some have said, the characters, interactions and dialogue were pretty bad and awkward.

My biggest pet peeve is when the writing sets up inside jokes or moments where the cast is seemingly having fun, but it doesn't translate to the audience at all and you're just sitting there watching these people laugh/have fun and you feel nothing for those moments.

The cinematography was absolutely fantastic and had quite a few moments that were just pure art. Kong himself looked awesome. Really reminded me of the animatronic from the Kong ride back in old Universal Studios, but in a good way.

My favorite part was when Kong had grabbed one of the helicopters and the camera is rotating with the helicopter as we see through the cabin with the two soldiers hanging on to reveal a downward shot of Kong as one of the soldiers falls into his mouth. So cool!

End credits definitely has me psyched for future releases.

Kong eating a guy was bonkers though since later on Dr Steve Brule explains that he's a big Kong fanboy because Kong was one of the monsters that *doesn't eat people*. Oops.

He's just not aggressive towards humans. These guys pissed him off so they gonna get et up.

Just got done watching watching it. Absolutely loved it. 10/10. They learned their lesson from Godzilla big time. Godzilla 2 gun b lit, son.

Yeah, I rewatched Godzilla 2014 the other day, and it really is a frustrating movie in regards to how it doles out the monster fights. Way too much teasing. Godzilla King Monsters will be glorious if they use the action in Kong as a template.

I thought Godzilla was reaaaal bad
I didnt know anything about that one so I had no expectation
Went to the 70mm showing with friends

Movie looked and sounded so great ! Nice directing and I was surprised when John C Reilly showed up. The comedic part were very nice and not sugar coated like in every action / superhero movies of the last 20 years too, very nice. I liked this more than Logan.

Just saw it at the local theater that does Wednesday night movies for $6 - liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It's been a while since a good Vietnam movie, and I thought that aspect really grounded it in a time and place that elevated the film overall. John C Reilly was AWESOME, Hiddleston showed a surprisingly different character from Loki (the only role I've ever seen him in), and Brie Larsson was so 😍, even if she did miss a hundred opportunities for incredible photos. I was kind of bothered by the total lack of explanation and back story on the island people (Reilly called them the Ewee?), so I weirdly hope they show up in future Monsterverse movies. Overall, leaps and bounds better than Godzilla, and it's giving me a hankering to watch the 2005 Kong movie, which I've only ever see in bits and pieces.

Damn was this movie good.

And it had the best aftercreditscene of the last years. Its been a long time since I had such a big grin on my face. Fucking awesome.

Kong: Skull Island is a film full of empty style. Scenes are included simply for the cool factor, with no regard for when it makes sense for character. The first two-thirds of the movie are super rough thanks to this. Vogt-Roberts directs with a really odd playfulness that doesn't mesh well with the ultra-serious characters and war setting. The script is similar to the 2014 Godzilla film in that the setpieces are few and far between while the characters are just dull archetypes elevated by the cast for the most part.

Speaking of the cast, they're serviceable for the most part. Hiddleston and Larson scoot by mostly on their charisma, and Reilly steals the movie in a really special way. The military crew outside of Jackson is awful though, and honestly, Jackson is only good half the time. Goodman is wasted although his counterpart in Hawkins is an interesting presence throughout. Kong himself is neat, but manages to both be in the movie too much and also far too little.

Yet, Kong: Skull Island does almost redeem itself. The third act is remarkably entertaining, allowing pay-offs for even the smallest bits with either awesome moments or legitimately sweet interactions between characters. Even the military crew is good in these forty minutes, which combines the human drama with the monster action in a breathtaking way. Vogt-Roberts's direction shines with this, the wackiness of the story finally converting his empty style to bubblegum style; ultimately flavorless, but joyful within the moment. However, despite its excellent third act, Kong: Skull Island ultimately disappoints thanks to poor character work and a complete tonal confusion.

Also, happy endings are dead; post-credit scenes killed them.

I was hoping Kong gave a big thumbs up at the end when he turned around one last time. I would've accepted that.

Hey, I feel like that scene was meant to be cheesy and funny because goddamn I laughed.
It was this slow motion, sacrifice scene that ended with the man getting whipped across a river and exploding when he hit a wall. The way that scene was built and resolved had to have been hilarious on purpose.
Like, you have to see the comedy there, right?

Also, the last time I saw that actor was when he was playing Peggy Carter's boss on Agent Carter.
...and he also died there by sacrificial explosion.

Reilly is the stealth main character of the movie. And yeah, that ending bit brought a tear to my eye.

Haha! Human life is meaningless, soldiers who believe they die for important causes are dupes and slapstick idiots! The world spits on you and on the hardest decision you've ever made in your life!

A real giggle fest.

Last time I saw that dude he was getting his nose broken by Paul Walker in Fast & Furious. This movie was a secret F&F reunion, with that movie's coldheart gangster Braga playing very against type as a science dork here.

just realised there is an OT

"Saw this tonight. 8/10

Dull start, fun island adventure with awesome monster island fights - it got slow a bit in the middle with the village+ samuelLJackson's crew in the wetlands (could have had an enemy/beast show up here) and ends with a thrilling final act. terrific cgi work. Gotta say, I'm not sold on Brie Larson. She was the one weak link here. Her and the worthless asian scientist chick (included no doubt because of chinese funding - probably a famous actress in the mainland)

And oh, it brutal too. There's some legit violent sequences.

Loved the post credit scene and I cannot wait for what the do next in this universe. "

Liked it quite a bit.

agreed. We cracked up when it happened.
you'd think he was sacrificing himself after being eaten and killing the skulleater from the inside but no... exploding against a wall
HI-LA-RIOUSSSS!!

Finally got around to seeing it.

The movie was damn fun, had a blast with it. My boi Dr. Steve Brule killed it and the ending
was especially touching with him and his family. Got a lil' teary eyed there.

Very disappointed in the movie. Not what I wanted.

Trainspotting 2 on the other hand was awesome. Go spend your money on that.

Saw this on Friday. It was such a blast. Just a big, dumb, great rollicking action flick. Shallow characters but those monsters fuck yeah.

OT should be titled "That Was An Unconventional Encounter" or "You shouldn't have come here."

Saw it last night

This movie was fucking amazing, the cinematography was BONKERS good. Each shot could be a movie poster. The tone was just right too, and the actors were well played and Kong has the right amount of screen time.

I loved the ongoing gag of no one really addressing how fucked up shit was. See a dude get pulled apart by flying dinosaurs? "shit happens yo, lets move on."

This movie was unabashedly trashy, Jurassic World-tier. Maybe monster shit just ain't for me.

Skull Island was infinitely better than Jurassic World, not even in the same ballpark.

I'd say both are definitely going for high budget trashy B-movie shlock, but Kong is the only one that actually nails that vibe, but most importantly it nails the fun of it.

Trashy isn't always bad, I certainly enjoy greasy ass burgers from time to time.

Just saw it. Holy shit that was bad. Aside from some action sequences, the rest is pure trash, with the worst dialogue I witnessed on screen, and the bar was already low. Some scenes are hilariously bad, Resident Evil like (the gas mask and the sword, OMG), characters were stupid or nonexistent...

That was a direct to video C-movie with big budget. Are there litteraly NO writers working on those "blockbusters"?

The shot with the sun behind Kong and the choppers were bonkers good. I want to hang it on my wall.

I was planning to watch this tonight. I actually had to stop watching it after they came to the island. This was pretty much terrible up to that point. It's almost like most characters in this movie didn't want to be there. And within the 30 min or so I tolerated, there was a few inconsistencies.

Not sure if I am gonna give it another chance. Maybe if some friends are up for it.

This might be a good "CGI porn" movie, but that's it.

Well, most of them didn't of course. They are there for money, fame or because ordered to do so.
